Chapter Thirteen: "Are You Pregnant?"
-
I was shaking with nervousness and excitement as I entered my apartment. I fiddled with the lock as I tried to get the key to go into the lock.
I had just received probably the best news of my life if I was going, to be honest, and I just could not wait to tell Garrett.
I practically speeded all the way home because I was just so anxious to tell him and I really wanted to do it in person.
When I finally got the door to open I screamed, "Babe!"
I heard noises coming from the kitchen then a voice, "In the kitchen!"
I practically ran into the room and had a huge grin on my face, "Hey!"
"What's up?"
I smiled even bigger if that was even possible, "Guess what?"
He dropped the sandwich he was making and walked towards me and raised his eyebrows and went a little pale, "Are- are you pregnant?"
My breath hitched in my throat before I coughed, "No." I sent a sheepish smile his way before biting my lip.
"Babe what is it? The anticipation is killing me."
"The times offered me a internship for the rest of the school year!" I squealed and jumped up and down and looked at him for his reaction.
He gasps and closes the space between us before grabbing my hips and lifting me up, "Oh baby! Congratulations!"
I laughed as he spun me around. He finally let me down and laid a long, soft kiss on my lips.
"I'm so proud of you," he murmured against my lips.
"Thank you babe. I start next Monday." I kissed him on the cheek then went into the mud room to take my shoes off.
It was now Friday so that means in just a few days I would be heading to school Monday morning then heading to my new internship after.
I will be absolutely exhausted, but I'm doing this for my future. I will do anything to be able to write for the New York Times. And I'm already kinda half way there.
I had interned in London as well, so I wasn't a newbie. I basically just got everyone coffee and audited meetings.
But if I want to make it to the top I will sacrifice anything.
Well not everything. Not Garrett.
He's the reason I've made it this far.
And like I've said repeatedly, I will never take him for granted again.
I love him and I know what I want now.
I want to be a publisher and a wife. And a mother. Can't forget that one.
-
It was officially Monday. I had just finished my morning classes and I was driving down to my future.
My heart was fixing to pound out of my chest I was so freakin nervous!
The only thing keeping me from having an heart attack was the fact Garrett was seated next to me.
He was driving me down here.
Thank god for him doing that because I would have probably passed out or maybe not even shown up.
I've never worked for something that is this important to me.
Sure, The Daily Telegraph was important to me but I knew my forever wasn't there. It was here. In the Big Apple.
I looked down to my folded hands in my lap. I was wearing a black pencil skirt and a white blouse with black heels. Basic office attire.
It was about a thirty minute drive down here so the anticipation was pretty much killing me.
I just couldn't wait to get there and see what the future holds.
We eventually get there and I stare out of the window, just looking at the tall skyscraper.
"Babe, you'll do fine!" Garrett says, placing his hand on my knee.
I turn to look at him and sigh, "It's not that I'm scared I won't do good, it's just that like once I get in here there's no coming out of it for me. You know?"
He nods, "I completely understand. But go have fun and show these bitches that you aren't one they need to mess with."
I giggled and gave him a passionate kiss on the lips before opening the car door and climbing out.
Here we go.
I walk into the building and glance one last time at Garrett who was smiling at me encouraging to go on.
I gather up the strength and walk to the front desk where a woman says, "Hi. How may I help you?"
I gave her a smile, "Hey! My name is Jessica Walker and I'm here starting my internship today."
She types something in on her computer and glances at me a few times before she smiles, "Head up the elevator to level seven. Stephan will be there to help you the rest of the way."
I nodded and thanked her before basically running to the elevator due to the excitement flowing through my veins now.
There is no scared Jessica here anymore. I am a professional.
The elevator dings when it arrives on floor seven and I am greeted by a tall brunette leaning against the door. He looks me up and down before speaking, "Are you Jessica?"
"Yes! And you must be Stephan?" He nods and tells me to walk next to him and talk. He shows me around the office and tells me where I will be sitting and working.
I met a few people who were too busy to really have a conversation with me, but they were sorta nice I guess.
Everyone is here to produce news, not friends.
Though having friends at work can make life so much easier. It kinda makes the day go by faster.
Eventually I sit down in my chair and look at the stack of papers that had already formed on my desk. Well it's time to get to work.
-
A month had passed and I was having an absolute blast at the Times. I had met another intern, her name was Reagan. She was super sweet and we had lunch together basically every day.
There was also Luke who had been there a little while longer than me. He sat with us a few times when he didn't want to eat his lunch with his other friends.
I had finally finished my first semester of my senior year of college. Every day it has been school, work, home. And repeat. I saw Garrett mostly on the weekends when he wasn't out of town for football. Sure we saw each other every night, but we would be too tired to really talk or even have sex.
I missed him.
God I missed him.
Tomorrow we would be leaving for Hayes and Alexis's wedding in the Grand Cayman Islands. Oh my goodness I was so excited.
I had visited there years ago on a cruise and it was absolutely breathtaking.
The water was a beautiful crystal blue with calm waves and beautiful historic houses.
It happened to be one of the richest islands in the world, apparently.
I looked at the clock and noticed it was 5:58 pm, almost time to go. I packed up my belongings on my desk and made sure to write a note to remind anyone that I would be gone for the next few days.
I couldn't wait for a vacation. I hadn't had one yet. Unless you count Saturday and Sunday as one.
I hadn't seen my friends since Thanksgiving, I feel pretty awful about it. But, Garrett had been keeping me in touch with everyone and everything. So it was okay. I had FaceTimed them a few times too.
They understand that I've been so busy and don't get home until late and on the weekends I'm unbelievably exhausted.
I've had numerous amounts of massages preformed by Garrett on my tense shoulders.
But I wouldn't change a thing.
I have actually gotten a small one hundred word review published on the newspaper already. When my boss told me about it I literally jumped out of my chair and hugged the life out of him.
I had a smile on my face for the rest of the day. It was so good.
I walked out of the building to find my almost husband already at the door and holding a bouquet of beautiful sunflowers in his hand.
"Hi baby. What's this for?" I ask him, and give him a kiss on the lips then sniffing the flowers.
My goodness they were beautiful.
"Just because I love you, gorgeous. Now let's go home." He hands me the flowers and takes my hand, leading me to our Maserati that my father had given us years ago. I had tried to get Garrett to trade it in for something newer, but he insisted we would keep it.
For what I'm not sure.
I think he just loved to let everyone know that he had a super expensive sports car.
I've been trying to get him to get the newest Mustang or Lamborghini but he won't budge.
He opened the door for me and I slid into the seat and smelled the air. It still smelled new since we didn't drive it often.
We were too scared that it would get scratched so we kept it in the garage with a cover on it.
"Are you packed and ready to go?" I ask fiddling with the hem of my skirt.
He hesitated at first then nodded, "Well, I started to pack then I found some old stuff in my room and got distracted."
I laughed, "Of course. Hey can get stop and get Chipotle? I'm starving."
He grinned, "I thought you'd ask that so look in the back seat."
I gasped and turned around in the back seat and saw a brown bag placed on the back seat. "Holy shit! Have I told you I loved you?"
"Only a few times." He flashed a smile at me and I leaned over the seat and kissed his cheek.
Man I love this guy. I can't wait to get married to the man of my dreams.
