Chapter 15
I was walking down a long winded trail- again.
With the parade of nosey puppies it was hard to stay quiet.
Constantly, one of the scraggly little things asked me questions, like: "Why are we escaping? And, why don't we just stay here?"
As you can tell, they were to young to understand the grim situation we were in.
A glowing light was up ahead. Teddy told us to stay close to the walls and shut our mouths up if we wanted to live. As we neared the entrance to the room, I started to hear voices.
"Hmmm.... The prisoners. My favourite topic! Well, we're running out of food. The meat-eaters would love some cat to chew on. And Queen Win-Always is probably getting hungry. I can't imagine how much food something like her can manage- probably an elephant a day!"
Everybody mumbled about what an elephant was.
"Is an elephant one of those big galloping things with flowing manes?" A kitten mrowed in confusion.
After we passed, Teddy explained. "They're colossal herbivores that live on the savanna. It would take a pack of hyenas, a pride of lions, and an alligator or two to take one of them down!"
Of course that led to more questions.
We had been in the tunnel for probably about an hour. Suddenly, we heard a forced voice yell.
"They're that way, that way..." The creature broke off in a fit of coughing. "Now, can you stop chok-"
I heard a squeal and I knew we had to run.
"Run!" I howled. I didn't care if they knew where we were anymore, we had to get out of here before they slit our throats . . .
We ran down the long lane of cold, grey stone until light started to open before our eyes.
Teddy stood a few tail-lengths away from me and started to snort in laughter manically.
"We made it! We made it! We made it, ha ha ha ha ha, they'll see now, won't they? They'll see how feeble prisoners can turn out to be strong non-prisoners!" He roared loudly. "I bet no one will ever stand in our way no-"
That was the last we ever saw of Teddy. His shrieks of joy and laughter faded as heavy talons pressed down upon his thick, scaled throat.
"Oh, Teddy dear... I wish I didn't have to do this, but you know, masters orders!" Said a large, winged predator with sharp fangs.
Teddy gurgled in surprise- which is apparently not a very good defends against a giant lizard. His body turned limp under her claws and it turned to us.
"I've been waiting. Follow me- unless you want the same fate as that useless reptile..." She said in a wistful voice, gazing at Teddys dead body.
We had no choice but to follow the massive, bloodstained creature so we followed. I was really starting to get tired of getting captured and disposed of over and over again... I could see looks of fright and despair on the young animals faces and a kitten from was shivering in anger, her long white fur poofing out.
"He shouldn't have been killed," She glanced grudgingly at the huge reptile. "He did nothing, not anything to deserve that death."
"I know..." I mewed. "maybe she can help..." I nodded at the huge 'majestic' reptile in the front.
