Chapter 1

I crouched beside him, we were alone. The world was brimming with uneasiness. If you were to look at the sky you could see the dawning pale clouds rolling in from the south. It was silent. A constant buzzing noise filled my head, causing fuzziness inside me, threatening to wash over me like a black wave.

A wide-spread spruce was our only protection from this vicious storm. A needle tickled my nose and I sneezed. 'So tiny but so strong,' I thought, glancing at the tiny, sharp needle dangling from a branch. Pinesap filled my nose with a lovely smell.

I sighed and felt his pelt brushing against mine. I looked over my shoulder to be greeted by his soft pink nose. My gaze slipped to his stormy grey pelt. His pelt was bristling, he was probably exited about this storm.

"Hello Flash." I mewed, looking at my mate. He dipped his head but didn't say a word. Flash was anticipating the brewing storm. I, on the other paw felt much less comfortable then him.

"I'll protect you." He reassured me, just when I had given up on him answering. I turned away to look once again at the storm. There was a bright, illuminating flash of lightning, followed by a throaty growl of thunder. I lay against the ground, pushing my muzzle into the dirt, almost suffocating. I felt a strong, sturdy grip on my scruff and I was heaved up by Flash.

"It's not going to help if you almost drown in dirt," He mrowed in amusement. "You'll never want your paws to touch the ground."

"Whatever." I growled hotly and continued pressing my orange pelt against the comforting dirt. This time Flash just watched with amusement in the corner of his eyes. I could see the excitement dancing in his Amber eyes and I gave in.

"Fine, you can go into the storm." I hissed. His eyes lit up even more and he purred a quick 'Thank you,' before dashing out from under the tree. He leaped across the grass and bushes, his paws barely touching the green grass.

The flashes continued and soon I could see nothing. I lay her head on her paws, her heart racing like a rabbit running from an eagle, trying to get away. It smelled like fresh rain outside. Cold, damp and wet. The plants smelled musty. My pelt clung to my skin and I shivered. 'The tree was good shelter until this rain,' I thought. I wrapped my fluffy, long-haired tail over my nose and tried to sleep. But the thing that bothered me the most was that Flash hadn't come back. He never took this long.

It was morning and the storm was gone. The sun was peaking behind the tall trees and the sky was filled with beautiful colours; orange, red and pink. I sniffed at the air. Everything was as damp as the night before. I was very hungry but I didn't have time to hunt; I had to find Flash.

I padded through the forest, looking for Flash.
"Flash?" I called over and over again.

I sighed as no one answered. I was really starting to worry about him. A sparrow sang above me and my ears perked, and for a second, I wondered if I should stop and catch it.
'Maybe,' I thought. 'Flash might be hungry when I find him.'

I stopped, and started to pad over to the tree. I lightly stepped across the forests floor, careful not to brush against leaves or step in twigs.
I leaped onto the tree, my claws digging into the bark and pulled myself up. The sparrow was standing on a broken branch singing its head off.

'Such a silly thing.' I mused at it. The branch wasn't to long so I reached out with my paw and grabbed at the sparrow, pulling it back to me. That's when I saw him. Flash. He was lying on the ground a few tree-lengths away from the tree I was in. I let the sparrow slip through my grip and it flew away.

I bounded down the tree, I need to get to him! Soon I was standing beside him. His Amber eyes were now glassy and his once smooth pelt was ruffled and torn. He had a cut on his right flank and it was slowly trickling out. That wasn't a good sign.

"Flash," I yowled. "I need you!" There was no answer. I lowered my head to his, my eyes moist.

"Nooooo!" I let out a long caterwaul, Flash couldn't be dead! I couldn't feel a heartbeat.
I gripped his scruff, it reminded me of last night.
'Never again.' I blinked, reminding myself of what was happening.

I had pulled Flash back to the tree and had begun to dig a hole.
The dirt pulled at my claws, threatening to rip them out, but this was for Flash. I had to do it. Dirt splattered into my eye and I stopped digging, pawing at my eye, trying to get it out.

I couldn't see anything. I ran to the stream nearby and stuck my law in it. My heart felt like it stopped for a second because of the cold water.
I shook the shock off and ran my now wet paw over my eye. I couldn't feel the dirt anymore, I think I could finish digging now.

I padded back to the tree and leaped back into the shallow hole. I started digging again and the pain stung.

Soon I was pressing my nose one last time to Flash's and ten pushing him into the hole.

"I'll miss you," I mewed in grief. "You were a good mate. I could count on you to take care of me and that you'd always be there. I'll miss your warmth beside me when I wake up and the touch of your nose."

I turned away from the grave and then a moment later thought different.

"What am I going to do without you, Flash?"
