grey
authors note: hi. okay, so i have no idea where this just came from, i just wrote it in one go and had to 'get it out'. maybe it's cheesy, idek, it was just suddenly there.
interpret it however you want, but please do not quote or compare and comment in relation to the forestfic because it has absolutely nothing to do with that and will not be appreciated, it just features colors.
other than that, thank you for reading if you do. pls leave a little comment maybe if you do ❤️
stay safe x
———————————————————
the world felt grey.
and yes, he could see color.
he could see all the different types of green of the grass. the dark, wild grass covered in in little weeds. the bright green of the new young grass, and the almost yellowish greens where the grass started to dry, losing its battle against the blazing sunshine.
he saw the deep prussian blue, that scared him, of the lake. when the water would move, little wrinkles of steel blue would light it up, but behind the wrinkles an even darker blue would follow. the near black made his skin crawl, the weight of it terrorizing his thoughts. he saw the almost turquoise blue when the sun would let its rays fall down onto the unmoving water, just slight shimmers of yellow reflecting from the surface.
he saw the soft lavender, the pastel pinks, the harsh oranges and brightest yellows in the otherwise so blue morning sky. sky blue. the color that had always made him wonder why. why did the sky look the more blue the further you seemed to gaze. why the horizon sometimes seemed to be nearly white, yet straight up it was so sky blue.
he could see the browns and reds of the soil he digged his feet in. how every different place held different colors in the ground and carried his feet. his backyard held deep brown dirt that would leave the soles of his bare feet tinted black. the side of the lake, where the water would only come half an inch above the ground, it looked brown tinted green. near the trees, the burnt brown color of the trees, the soil seemed nearly red, rusty red, trying to difference itself from it's surrounding.
there was no doubt.
he could see all the colors.
but the world felt so grey.
he wasn't sure what it meant. his friend had just laughed when he told how he felt.
"you can't feel colors" had been his answer.
"you can just see them"
how could he say that? how could the one person that felt like a rainbow say that?
he was confused. if he could see everything, every color in its own tiny detail... then why did the world still feel so incredibly grey.
"you never feel like the world is grey? heavy?"
his friends eyes had shimmered in the bright sunlight, his yellow hair enhanced by the force of that same light.
"no man, look around you. how is this grey"
and he looked around him. the grass, the soil, the water, the sky. colors. he saw them, yet he felt none of them.
"it doesn't look grey, it feels grey"
his friends smile had faded away into the unknown. an intrigued frown now decorated his face.
"how does the sun feel on your skin?" he wondered.
his friend shrugged "warm"
he rolled to his back, staring up the bluest sky. maybe he was wrong. maybe you could only see colors, and not feel them.
maybe the world didn't feel grey, maybe he was making things up.
"what does grey mean?" his friend asked, shuffling a little closer to where he was laying in the dying grass that made his skin itch.
it was a good question. he had been wondering so much about how grey everything felt, but the thought of what it meant had never crossed his mind.
what did it mean? why did it make so much sense, yet none at the same time? why was he so convinced on things feeling grey, yet he started to realize he didn't even know what it meant?
"i- i don't know" he whispered
"are you sad?"
"i don't know" he whispered again, even more silent, his words easily blown away by the early morning breeze.
"apart from grey, what do you feel?" his friend asked now. he had to think, but he didn't have any answer available. not a single thing came from his mind and rolled of his tongue.
"nothing"
"nothing?"
it was silent after that. he felt nothing. the world felt grey, and he felt nothing. he was scared, his lip trembling softly. wasn't he supposed to feel.. something? it was as if he could just float away in the the sky blue sky, float away and disappear into the colors, then becoming one with the grey.
"hey" his friend whispered
"it's okay"
"i'm scared"
"i'm here"
he looked at his friend. and before he knew, his friend gently rolled to his side towards him. he smiled, whitest teeth reflecting morning sun, as did his eyes. they had a color that was beyond his knowledge. deep and dark, but not scary. deep and dark, but remarkably light when the sun touched them.
his friend scooted even closer, pulling himself against his side. a pulled up knee rested on top of his thighs, a hand gently searching for his, bright yellow hair tickling underneath his chin.
he could cry.
he did cry. softly.
it was silent for a while and his friend held his hand, slightly calloused thumb stroking the soft skin on the back of his hand.
he forgot about grey.
"do you feel anything now?" his friend whispered after a unknown amount of time. to him it could've been mere seconds, but he could've easily been convinced it lasted days.
"rainbow", he whimpered.
his friend chuckled, making the colors of the rainbow even brighter, like a friendly wave crashing upon the shore, splatters of color flying everywhere and he had been hit full frontal.
"you feel like rainbow" he whispered again.
