I stood over Reuben and waited for the vet's word. She examined Reuben and I prayed. Jesse was outside and I was inside with Reuben. 

Reuben whined and the vet pursed her lips. "What's his age?" she asked and I clenched my fist, the pain jarring me. 

"I.. don't know. He's my... boyfriend's." I said easily and she shook her head. 

"Well... I've got some bad news," she said gravely.
