Adena's POV
I lost my breath for a moment as his lips left my cheek. He smiled causing my heartbeat to quicken before he faded away as I awoke from my dream. I still had butterflies fluttering around in my stomach as I smiled; I have never been this happy to be up.
Usually when I woke up, I didn’t feel anything except a small amount of wanting to be asleep. I usually loved to be asleep. It was like being dead without the commitment.
But not today.
I sat up and bit my lip to keep myself from smiling. I could still feel the heat from his lips on my cheek. I smiled and jumped out of bed.
I was going to smile and enjoy today like I have never before. I danced my way to the bathroom. I froze remembering I had chores to do, but I shrugged it off and decided to have a cleaning party.
Today would be a day of fun and nothing else.
I ran downstairs, walking towards the radio we had sitting on the back table in the living room. I flipped it on, turning up the volume
“It’s time to take a step back to two years ago. Here's one of the most popular songs of 2011,” the radio host announced as a very familiar beat erupted. “Sexy and I Know It by LMFAO.”
I headed over towards the vacuum, spinning around and kicking my feet along the way. When I reached the vacuum I pulled out one of the attachments and used it as a microphone.
“Yeah, yeah,” I started to sing, walking towards the hall mirror. “When I walk on by,” I sung, walking past the mirror. “Girls be looking like,” I doubled back looking in the mirror, “Damn he fly,” I said, winking at myself as I walked into the kitchen. “I pimp to the beat, walking on the street in my new lafreak, yeah,” I sang, popping my collar.
I finally made it into the kitchen, switching my vacuum extension for a wooden spoon. “This is how I roll, animal print, pants outta control,” I threw my head back and started to twirl. “It's Redfoo with the big afro” I pulled my hair out of it’s ponytail and shook it, tossing the hair tie onto the counter. “And like Bruce Leroy I got the flow.” Reaching for the ceiling, I started swaying my hips to the music; almost running into the kitchen counter. “Ahhh, Girl look at that body,” I sang three times into the spoon. “I-”
“I-I, I work out,” Someone sang, scaring me. I spun around to see Quinton, flexing his biceps.”Ahh, girl look at that body,” He sang three times, rubbing a hand down his stomach with a very creepy look on his face. “When I walk in the spot.”
“Yeah,” I sang. “This is what I see.”
“Okay,” Quinton sang as he got down onto one knee and made a camera with his fingers.
“Everybody stops and they starin’ at me,” I sang, doing model poses. Quinton jumped up off the ground.
“I got passion in my pants and I ain't afraid to show it, show it, show it, show it...” We both sang in unison. We stopped for a moment and waited for the next part. “I'm sexy and I know it.” We sang twice, stopping for a quick second to laugh.
“Yo, when I'm at the mall, security just can't fight 'em all,” Quinton sang, spinning in a circle. His socks caused his feet to slip from under him, as he slammed to the ground. I couldn’t help but burst into laughter. As I did, I glanced at the clock.
“Oh my goodness!” I said as he sat up.
“Don’t worry, I’m fine,” he said getting up from the ground and dusting himself off.
“No! I’m going to miss my cartoons!” I yelled, running into the living room and jumping onto the couch. Quinton quickly follows me, almost slipping again on the wood floor. I turned the TV on and changed it to Cartoon Network. “Tom and Jerry here we come!”
We laughed as Jerry bit Tom’s paw and zoomed away; quickly followed by Tom. Quinton turned to me and crossed his eyes while sticking his tongue out. I put my hand to my mouth as laughter overwhelmed me so much my stomach hurt. I enjoyed these times with Quinton when we could laugh and joke around together.
Tom hit Jerry with a fly swatter and we laughed together as Jerry went splat over and over again. I really loved Tom and Jerry and being with Quinton made it better.
I sighed as I turned the TV off when the episode ended. All of a sudden, Quinton burst into laughter, causing me to jump.
“Whats so funny? The show’s over.” I questioned.
“Oh nothing much, but when Tom was all woozy from the wine, it reminded me of what Grady texted me a couple minutes ago,” he laughed to himself.
“And?” I raised a brow.
“Oh, Grady had told me that he woke up Dylan called him. Apparently Dylan was freaking out when he woke up because he didn’t know how he got home. Grady tried to convince him Jackie took him home, but Dylan thinks he did something he shouldn’t have. If you know what I mean...”
“I know how he got home,” I stated.
“Really, how?”
“I took him,” I nonchalantly shrugged.
"You took him?" Quinton questioned with an eyebrow raised.
"I didn't take him on a date or to the movies Quinton... I only took him home."
"You took Dylan Henderson... home?" I nodded. "I didn't even know you two were speaking to each other?"
"He’s my partner for my English project."
"And?" He pestered
"And what?"
"Well? What's your status? Friends... more?" He smirked, hitting me with his elbow.
"He's an egotistical jerk who I'm being nice to for projects sake." I lied so he would drop the topic.
"You know, the last project partner I had was Halle Cohen. I ended up dating her for six months." Quinton smiled with a reminiscent look in his eyes.
"You dated Halle Cohen for two hours before she dumped you to go back with her boyfriend."
"Six months, two hours. Time is time my dear sister" I laughed at his foolishness. "Should we tell Dylan that's how he got home? Or should we make him think he cheated on Jackie for a ride home?"
"No!" I immediately replied.
"See! You do have feelings for Dylan! I'm not blind."
"No, I just don't want to mean to someone. I mean we’re just two different people stuck working on the same project together. That doesn't mean I go and give him a heart attack over the fact that he would think he cheated on his girlfriend.”
"Okay, okay. I'll tell Grady to tell Dylan to the truth. But right now...we’re going to go out!”
"No thanks," I replied quickly.
"Oh come on! Grady and I are going to the movies and you're coming with!" Quinton said, patting me on the knee and standing up.
"I can't! I have to uh... get ready! It'd take me too long, I'd make you late for your movie."
“You don’t even know what time the movies starts?” He questioned, crossing his arms over his chest. “Plus, you are beautiful as you are. You don’t need to get ready.”
“No I am not; plus I have too many chores to do. I have to pick up Ryan from soccer. I mean the list of things I have to do today are endless! And going to the movies isn’t on it,” I stood up and smiled. “Thanks though, maybe next time?”
"Adena, I'm not an idiot! I know you're just making up excuses so you don't have to leave the house!" He started as I walked away from him. “Adena!” He yelled, walking after me.
“I’m not lying!” I simply replied. Quinton caught up and grabbed my arm. He yanked me towards the mirror in the front hall.
“Adena, look at yourself. You are so beautiful! Most girls would die to have your figure. You have clear skin and shining brown eyes. Even your hair shines just right. You don’t need to fix yourself up or cover yourself. You are beautiful and I don’t understand why you can’t see that.” He gave me a glance before walking away from me and the mirror; the mirror that never lied. I looked at my reflection in the mirror.
I didn’t see what he saw. I saw a scrawny girl with brown hair that laid limp against her shoulders. I saw brown eyes that hid secrets. I saw a pale girl, scared of emotion and relationships. I turned away and shook my head.
“You’re wrong.” I whispered to myself. “All I see is a waste of space.”
