-Chapter 7-

These locks looked expensive and new. There must be something very important behind that door....

What I didn't understand was, wasn't this building abandoned?
Why would people still come here and lock any doors? The thought crossed my mind that this building could still be used....

Maybe as a hiding place? But what was there to hide here? I had to find out!

I jiggled the locks slightly, but gave up shortly. It had been locked really well, so you could only open it with the original key.
I heard Joshua's snoring and stopped rattling the door. It was no use trying to break the lock anyway.

I took a deep breath and didn't know what to do next.

I ran away from home to get rid of my violent parents, and now I am in an old building that pretends to be an abandoned hospital with unresolved issues.

Moreover, I am no longer alone on my difficult journey.... Joshua is with me now too. I can't just let him go or leave him alone.

Now that I was thinking about all this, I noticed that we didn't have anything to eat. How were we going to care about ourselves?

I didn't really know my way around this area, but I was aware that there was no water well nearby. Besides, it would be very risky to go out because there were those men who had stabbed Joshua.

I'm sure they didn't give up. It occurred to me that if people were still coming to this building, there might be something to eat somewhere. I decided to take a closer look at the other rooms. I walked with slow steps to the door opposite us.

I tried to be very quiet because the floor creaked incredibly loudly. I didn't want to wake Joshua. I looked briefly in his direction. He seemed to be sleeping peacefully.

I slowly touched the door handle. This door didn't open as easily as the others, but it wasn't locked. I ran into the door twice, and the third time it burst open loudly. I looked at Joshua, startled. Mercifully, he hadn't woken up. I turned my gaze to the room in which I now found myself. What I saw afterwards made me freeze.

The room was very bright in contrast to the others. The sun's rays shone through the broken windows. Here, too, there were glass splinters everywhere and the window had been smashed. Why were all the windows in this building smashed or nailed shut from the inside?

I thought for a moment and decided to deal with it later. There were enough other mysteries to solve in this building. In the middle of the room was a rusty cot. It was probably once used for operations. But what shocked me so much that I froze was that there was dry blood on this couch. The metal couch looked cold and uncomfortable. At the end of this room, there was a half-open door. I held my breath. What was waiting for me behind that door? Should I go back to Joshua and wait for him to wake up? But I had to look for food, otherwise Joshua wouldn't be much better. He, no, We could die!

As scared as I was and not knowing what was behind the door, I dared to open the half-open door completely. It didn't squeak...

In front of me were unopened food boxes. I also noticed crates of alcohol, clothes, tools and much more. So was I right with my thoughts? Everything looked very new, too new for such an old building. I slowly walked into the room and knelt down by one of the boxes. The expiry date was only in 10 days! I was right! People really did still come here!

A cold shiver ran down my spine at this thought. If there really were others coming here and living illegally, like Joshua and me, these people had to be dangerous. I swallowed. How was I going to explain this to Joshua? I wanted to save myself and him from all these dangerous and evil people. And I had dragged us both right into something very dangerous! How could I be so stupid?

I continued to look around the room and discovered a sink. Could it be that there was even fresh water here? I ran in that direction and turned the tap. Sure enough! There was fresh and clean water!

How could that be possible?

I kept asking myself questions, but it occurred to me that I should hurry to get back to Joshua. I had no choice and grabbed a box of food and filled a couple of empty glasses I found on the floor with the water from the tap. I ran back and had to cross the room with the creepy couch in the middle. I took a deep breath and left both rooms.

Behind me, I closed the door as quietly as I could and left the second door in the room half open again. Who knows when these people will come back here. They must never notice that there are other people here....
