Shawn Mendes released his sophomore album "Illuminate" on September 23, 2016. The record consists of twelve songs with a bonus track of three extra songs. Illuminate showcases various love songs and problems in the society. 

With mature content, incredible guitar playing, and soulful melodies, it's clear that this album exceeds expectations and well-produced.

"Ruin" is a great song to begin the album with. With a soulful bass, Shawn sings about heartbreak as someone who has loved and lost.

As the first song that released off the album, "Treat You Better", especially the video, sheds light on the important topic of abusive relationships and domestic violence. It's a more musically intense song.

"Understand" is a guitar-ridden ballad with sprinkles of piano. Shawn mixes it up with the vocals, using inspiring words about embracing, growing up, and embracing change, while staying true to yourself. Overall, it's a great ending to the album.
