Chapter 2- Unfamiliar Territory
Everything appeared dark at first. Then, without warning, a title screen appeared. The words "Revenge of the Dead" popped up, painted with various shades of red and blue. Along with the title came eerie 8-bit music, the kind that might show up in a horror level from an 80s video game.
Ryo Shindo found himself lying face-down on rocky ground. He stood up and looked at his surroundings. He had dreamt of beautiful locations before, but nothing like what he saw now. The cave environment Shindo found himself in seemed to have a cerulean glow to everything. Stalactites dangled from the ceiling in unique patterns.
When Shindo looked to his right, he saw a large, mouthlike opening, and from the mouth flowed a crystal-clear river for as far as the eye could see. He also discovered that he stood on a cliff with a road-like pathway.
Shindo then decided to explore a bit. He started walking to his right, taking in all of the sights as he did so. Eventually, Shindo came across a cave wall blocking his path. Not willing to give up, he turned around and started walking in the opposite direction. Maybe he would have better luck this time.
In the distance, Shindo saw what looked like an old village. Maybe he could go in and ask somebody where he was. The town itself had a wrought-iron gate for an entrance. Shindo tried opening it to no avail. When he turned around, though, the gate opened up on its own.
"Did the wind do that?" he wondered.
Just when he was about to go inside, Shindo felt the hairs on the back of his neck stand up. Turning slowly around, he saw an older man wearing nothing but a white robe. The man had wispy, silver hair and a bony appearance. Staring directly into Shindo's eyes, he raised his wooden cane and pointed it directly at him, shuffling towards him as he did so. Shindo backed away, frightened. That was a mistake.
He ended up slipping off the pathway, tumbling down towards the vast river below. Fortunately, right before he could hit the water, Shindo woke up in a sweat. Looking around his room to make sure everything was all right, he let out a sigh of relief. That dream was one of the most vivid he ever had.
Shindo then looked at his clock. It would be another four hours before the train would arrive, so he decided to fall back to sleep. Hopefully, he would not reencounter the old bastard.
