On the Defensive
"What did you say?" She asks shocked.
"I said-"
"I know what you said..." She says quickly she then looks at me. "I just can't believe it..."
"I understand..." I reply. "I knew this was a bad idea."
I start to get up and leave not wanting to cause more of a scene than there already has. As I do she sits on the bed... and stares at the floor... before I leave I turn I look over my shoulder. "If you don't want me to stay... I understand..."
She snaps back to reality and calls out, "No!"
I stop and wait staring at the floor... she stares at me and then continues, "I don't want you... to- to leave... I just can't understand what you told... me... but please don't leave."
I turn to her and sit in my spot, still ready to leave in a moments notice...
"Why do you feel that way..." she says.
"Because you actually care for me... but then again you're the only one who has... so it might change later on once I'm used to it."
She nods, and then goes to the kitchen... "I'm sorry I said that it wouldn't change anything and I let it..."
"It's not your fault... it was a shock for you..." I reply. I then think, 'and for me as well.... I didn't expect something like that... but to be honest with myself... I knew what I expected wouldn't come true."
"Oh no..." She calls form the kitchen. "I forgot to get food."
"The market is still open." I reply getting up.
She comes out shocked. "The market?"
"Yeah, I know that it's the bad side of town... but that's why I'll come with you... or go alone."
She grabs her jacket and comes with me as we leave. We leave the building and set off to the area near my building... she was asking me where it was... I think I might show her if Yoshito isn't there, knowing him... and the other demons I've killed, he'll try to stop us from being friends... or just kill her.... I can't let that happen.
We hit the streets of the market and she stares around... "the market?"
"Food isn't that good... but it's food." I reply smiling a little... as we walk down some of them see me and glare at me, I pull my hood up. She stares at me, "why did you put your hood up?"
"I've had to steal from them before... and now they don't like me all that much."
She walks up to one and I look around for Yoshito. I glare at every corner, every person, and every single place both expected, and unexpected. Finally after she gets what she needs she turns to me and asks. "What's wrong?"
I turn and look back at her smiling, "nothing."
She looks around too and then says, "so was your building around here?"
'Why did she have to bring that one up...'
I sigh a resigning breath knowing I can't lie to her. "Yes it is..."
"Great! I'd love to see it."
"No you wouldn't..." I reply. "It's not really something people would want to look at."
"Well I do is that a problem?"
"Kinda..." I mutter to myself. But against my better judgement... I lead her to the alley where we first met.
After we get there she shutters at the familiar sight... she moves a little closer to me as we move ahead... I stop and see her hand grab my sleeve, "If you want we can leave."
"No..." she says realizing what she did, "I'm sorry, I didn't mean..."
"It's okay," I reply trying to hide my slight thrill and"on-top-of-the-world" feeling. "We're almost there."
We round a corner and I sense something extremely wrong... Yoshito's pressense is lurking nearby.
I look around trying to find him and I get prepaired for a fight... she sees this and stares at me. "Something wrong?" She asks.
I look down at her and I then look at the familiar building, the cracks in the wall are many and the musky feel and smell are still the same... its creepy and scary...
"We're here..." I look at it and we draw closer, then I think to myself, 'Yoshito's pressense is growing stronger... her's got to be inside. I look up and see a figure turn away. I glare at it in rage and slight fear for Megumi.
I turn to leave, "okay we've seen it let's go."
I don't hear a reply and I turn to see Megumi moving up the stairs inside. I growl in anger and run after her. I catch up and call to her. "This place is condemned, let's get out of here."
"So?" She replies. "I'm curious."
She doesn't sound like herself anymore, she sounds more distant, obviously the work of Yoshito. We enter the top floor and I see the familiar plastic screenings, and torn curtains. I look to Yoshito smiling his same chestiar grin, he's pulling Megumi to him and glares at her with hunger in his eyes.
"Thank you Ryo," he calls to me. "I haven't had anything but that 'trash' at the market for quite a spell. And now I've raised my hunger for flesh and soul."
"Let her go Yoshito," I reply in a demanding voice. "She's with me."
He smiles wider. "So this is the one you've been searching for."
I charge him, causing him to ignor Megumi, releasing her from his enchantment, and making him block my attack. I then jump back to Megumi casting my own protective charm around her. "Megumi you have to get out of here."
"Ryo I don't understand what's going on? How did I get up here?"
I here Yoshito laugh and he glares at me. "You never told her what you were?"
I glare at him, "I am nothing, and so are you Yoshito."
I raise my hand to strike him, but he grabs it and slams his fist into my face. After that he changes his nails to get longer. "Now, now Ryo," he calls to me, "that wasn't very nice. There should be no fighting in front of our guest."
"I am no longer living in this shit hole place." I call to him. "This is not my home."
I use the magic I posses to summon a blade in my hand. "You will no longer devour the souls of inisent people anymore."
"Ah but Ryo," he sneers. "What about the souls you've devoured?"
Megumi stares at him and then at me... no doubt awe struck about what the batte is holding. But even worse so at his words. "Devouring souls? I don't understand."
"Allow me to enlighten you about your friend Ryo." Yoshito calls to her. "Ryo here is an Akuma!"
She stares at me in shock and fear. "A demon?!"
I accept defeat and refuse to look at her face... "yes, I am... I'm sorry Megumi... but I didn't want to admit it... to anyone... but I am."
"You lied to me?" She asks.
"No, I just didn't want you to fear me... like you do now." I say with a depressed tone.
"Aww, an akuma loves a human, how... desgusting." Yoshito calls to me. "I'm sorry Ryo, but I'm going to kill you now. And then devour the girl."
I move in front of her in a fighting style with my sword in front of my arms pointing to the side in a horizontal hold. "I do not care if you kill me," I call out, "but if you dare touch her, I will obliterate what ever's left of your torn spirit."
He smiles a wicked sneer, "well then, let's get down to it then, shall we?"
I charge him and try to split his body in half with a horizontal slice. He catches my blade with his claws and then sends his claws into my side. I step back and he attacks again, I send my blade up to try and block the attack, but a gash is left in my cheek, then an arm is sent into my chest. I gasp as I feel him grip my heart, squeezing it as hard as he can, he then removes his hand from it and I feel it beating weekly from the instant force applied and released. I collaps to the floor wrapping my arms around my chest as he picks up my blade, he walks away, "good bye Ryo."
Megumi reaches me and places an arm on my back, "Ryo, hang on I'll help you."
I look up to see Yoshito come to us raising the blade in the air, she sees him and wraps her arms around me. "No, you can't!"
"Actually I think I can, and you... you are my meal so be a good peice of meat and wait in the meat locker."
"He's hurt enough! Why can't you just leave him alone?"
"He's a traitor," He growls. "Now why don't you just go cowar in fear and let me finish."
I gasp a little getting my claws to develope and then get ready to strike, "Actually Yoshito," I gasp heavily.
I pounce and send my claws into his chest and tear into his heart out, he stares at the wound as the blade disapears from his hand. He falls back and then moves no more.
I look down at his body with blood spatters all over this floor, not only mine, but the one of my old friends. I then feel the fatigue of the fight and collaps, Megumi calls out and reaches to catch me... I hit the ground anyway and she's there next to me. My blood trickles from the gap in my chest... rain starts to fall into the room, the roof had caved out years ago, and washes the blood away partially. She holds me next to her as I lie on what seems to be my death... floor.
"You saved me..."
"It's getting to be a habbit." I smirk trying to hide the fact I'm nearly bleeding out.
She chuckles a little and then leans down and kisses me. I for one am a little shocked... 'why?'
She looks at me and then sees the gash covered in blood. "I don't understand though, are you really a..."
"...demon?" I reply. "Yes, unfortunately I am... I was possessed by one, and its power caused my family's murder and it won't release me." I think for a little bit about her reaction to it the first time. "Why did you protect me if you acted like you feared and hated my demonic heart?"
"Because you didn't deserve to die..." She says shaking her head. "Expecially after you have saved life twice."
"But then why the reward?"
"As I watched you fight to save me... three times now, I can't help but feel a slight atraction... I wouldn't call it big... but it's a small stirring. I don't know why."
I nod a slight one and wait for her to continue, she sighs and stares at me. "Why do you insist on protecting me? I'm mean if you know you're going to get hurt to this extent."
"Because I care..." I reply. "I feel as if I could do it forever, I feel as if I actually have a purpose now... not just some monster devouring the souls of inoscents."
She nods again, "does it want to take control?"
"Yeah... and I can't let it."
"Why does it want out?"
"It doesn't want out... it wants control... and I never figured out why."
She nods and helps me to my feet. And as we leave she tries to get me to lean on her. But I refuse and walk out on my own...
We get back to the apartment and she flops on her bed after putting the food in the fridge. "Just let me wrap you up at least. I owe you my life, three times over."
"No you don't and I told you at least twenty times it's because I'm afraid if you touch my blood something might affect you."
"Like what?" She asks.
I sit in my spot and stare at her. "A kid cut me one and the acidity in my blood rose once it touched his skin, once it broke the epidermus it turned him into something else inside... soon that kid died of an unknown desiese... I don't want that happening to you... I can't let it after I swore..." I stop after realizing my error again.
"What?" She says staring at me. "You swore to protect me?"
I slightly nod... she looks at me again. "You swore that to yourself..."
Again I nod expecting her to become a little more upset but she never does. "Why?"
"Because I doubt this feeling is just some idle fantasy of being wanted because of the absence of such..." I reply. "I feel as if it's more than that..."
I feel the pain shoot majorly, and I cry out a little in a slight growl. She gets up and grabs the wrappings over on her bedside table. She comes over and I feel something retreat. Like it's a little hesitant of her pressnce.
As she starts to wrap the banages around me, she hums a little tune. I watch her curiously as if expecting a pain to shoot through me at any given moment that could end my life right then. But none of the sort ever comes. She makes makes quick work of my injuries and then steps back to admire her work. She frowns a little and then says, "the school's going to be wondering..."
"I know..." I reply... "I don't know if I even want to go back to that place again."
She stares at me a little hurt and confused. "I don't understand why though?"
"I don't like the fact that I'm being ridiculed just for being new..." I sigh deeply. I then think. 'That and the last time I was there I nearly had my damn head caved in...'
"But you aren't... at least not by me..." she says in response. "Ryo please come to school?"
I don't truly see the purpose behind it... but against my better judgement, yet again, I nod and say okay.
'I will never understand why that smile seems to get me to subcome to what ever she wants, desires, or needs. But I don't really care. As long as I can love her, I can keep being her little servant, bodyguard, and better yet, friend.'
