EARLY YEARS/PRE-AKATSUKI:

Nagato was born in Amegakure and lived through the Second Shinobi War. His parents were killed by Konohagakure shinobi during a raiding mission that went wrong. He reports that he had to kill one of the shinobi to "protect himself" and that he felt horrible for doing so.

He was orphaned during this attack and spent several days with his parent's bodies, stating he was "unsure" of what to do next. Hunger forced him to leave his parents and home and venture into the war torn World.

During this time, he met two other orphans who became instrumental in shaping Nagato's outlook and future. One, Konan, was a girl from Amegakure who befriended and supported Nagato. The second, Yahiko, a strong willed boy filled with idealistic visions of how he wanted to shape the World.

These three banded together for survival, comfort and friendship. Eventually, Jiraiya, a Sannin from Konohagakure, decided to mentor and train them and Nagato speaks highly of him. It wasn't until Jiraiya decided he needed to leave to fulfill his own "personal mission" that the orphans were abandoned and left disillusioned again.

The three of them decided to start their own organization, the Akatsuki, to help others and prevent war, spreading a message of peace. Nagato suspected someone was working behind the scenes of the organization, working to corrupt its message and purpose, and this is what lead to Yahiko's death.

Yahiko dying is a significant event in Nagato's life. It is likely during this event that Nagato's psyche split into two giving rise to his alter ego, Pein. As Pein, Nagato took over the Akatsuki, with a double agent's help, and the organization's message of peace became twisted into one of forcing peace through war.

One polarizing event was Konan's affection for Yahiko. Nagato speaks freely of his desire for Konan and his jealousy that Yahiko seemed to have won the girl of Nagato's dreams. When Yahiko died, Nagato took over Yahiko's body and used it to commit his crimes and seduce Konan. The two developed a codependent relationship and writer questions if Konan was as willing a participant as Nagato claims.

The fact that Nagato would possess his best friend's body in the first place is a sign of a deeply disturbed mind. That he would continue to do so, and forge some type of romantic and sexual relationship with another while using it, shows just how deep his psychological wounds went. No sane man controls the body of a dead man for the purposes of crime and sex.

AKATSUKI:

As the leader of the Akatsuki, Nagato was directly responsible for the damage caused in its name.

He launched attacks on other Nations, encouraged the kidnappings of several members, orchestrated the kidnappings and murders of several jinchuriki and laid waste to Konohagakure. Under his command, the organization went from one seeking peace to waging war.

Nagato commented on the duality, saying "we all have it in us to decide our path. Some paths we walk singly, other paths we walk at the same time. War and peace are such paths". He's aware and takes responsibility of his crimes although he contends that not all his crimes were aggressive or hostile actions.

It is interesting to note that during this time period, Nagato gave Pein more and more control over his daily life, to the point where Pein became the dominant personality and Nagato was buried deep within his psyche. It wasn't until he was defeated by a jinchuriki that Nagato was able to re-emerge as the dominant personality.

POST CAPTURE:

Since he has been in captivity, Nagato has made great strides to repair his psyche and subdue his Pein personality. There have been instances where Pein overrides Nagato and during these times, Pein was involved in prison riots, breakouts, shanked a man to death and maimed a prison guard for "looking at him funny". It is clear that Pein is the most dangerous of the two personalities and Nagato needs continual monitoring and treatment to ensure Pein stays buried.

DIAGNOSIS:

Dissociative Identity Disorder
Manic Depression
Bipolar Disorder
Delusions of Grandeur (Pein only)
Paranoid Schizophrenia (Pein only)

FITNESS:

Nagato is fit to stand trial, however, his extensive and intensive need for psychological evaluation and treatment brings into question if he truly understands the judicial process and the penalty that the prosecution is seeking.

Nagato accepts the death penalty whilst Pein refuses to, becoming angry, hostile and dangerous at the mention of his looming death. Pein is unable to see himself as mortal and claims he cannot die and his "ideas, and myself, shall rise again! There will always be Pein!".
