Chapter 8: Kill the Vision
POV: Y/n
I was sitting in the conference room with Najeda, Leone and Lubbock eating breakfast before I left to train. "I'm wondering if it's really smart to put Sheele in charge of Tatsumi." Lubbock said picking up an apple. "It'll be fine." Najeda said eating another apple, "I think those two will get along fine together." "What makes you say that?" Lubbock asked, as I raised an eyebrow. "It's good for Tatsumi to have a more experienced teacher." Najeda said. "HEY!" I said, annoyed, "I'M SITTING RIGHT HERE!" "I've got dibs on using Tatsumi next!" Leone said shooting her hand in the air. "And see?" Najeda said pointing at Leone with her thumb, "She also has talent." "WHAT THE HELL!" Lubbock cried, over reacting, "THAT'S SO UNFAIR!" "To be an assassin," Najeda started, "more experience means a better killer. What do you think? I said something cool, didn't I?" None of us reacted. "I guess not?" Najeda said. "I'm still mad about you saying I have less experience than Sheele." I said crossing my arms, "She is capable, but she joined long after my training started."
Later that morning, I was meditating by the river Tatsumi used to train. I had Water-Dragon Sword jabbed into the dirt. After a moment, I saw a vague shadow appear in my mind. Father, is that you? I asked the image. "Yes, my son." the image said, becoming far clearer, "I came to see you." Father, I thought, Why have you waited until now to do this? "What," My father said, "Can a father not talk to his son? Besides, you were often training, or had things clouding your mind. Even now, your judgement isn't very clear." "Old man, let Uncle Jamo explain." Came another voice revealing itself to be Uncle Jamo, even though he isn't really my uncle. "We're talking to you because you need to continue the Gravekeeper line." Uncle Jamo said before a snake's tail came out and wrapped around him, "Jamo, shut up." Came a feminine voice. Miss Umber! I thought, It's good to see you, I wish I could give you a hug, all of you. "That's not the reason we're here Y/n," Umber said rubbing the bridge of her nose, "Although it is good to see you, especially after you started getting revenge for us, but it's about our brother, Mudai." What about him? I asked awaiting the answer from any of my family I was seeing. "He's alive," My father said, "I want you to go find him." Of course father. I thought as I heard Tatsumi walk up behind me. "Y/n, we're wanted back at base." Tatsumi said as my vision ended. "Fine," I said getting up, I have a mission I need to complete anyhow."
Later that night, we were in the debriefing room, making sure Tatsumi's wounds were healed. "Tatsumi," Najeda said, sitting in her chair, "your wounds are pretty much healed, right?" "Yes ma'am." Tatsumi said, "Thanks to those potions from Y/n, they've been healed since this morning." "Here's the teigu we took from Zank," Najeda said holding out the small closed teigu I took the night before, "I want you to try using it." "Really!? Tatsumi said happily, "No one else wants it!?" "It's one teigu per person." Bulat said, placing his arms at his side, "It's because it takes considerable mental and physical strength to control them." Lubbock added. Tatsumi then placed the teigu on his head. "There was nothing about it in the book." Najeda said, " But it's a teigu after all, so I'm curious to see what it does." "If it has the ability to read minds," I said, "try reading mine or Akame's." "Akame," Tatsumi said closing his eyes and raising his head up, catching Akame's attention as she looked slightly worried, "Wants to have meat tonight!" "Exactly." Akame said. "She always wants meat for dinner," I said scratching my head, "I don't want him to read my mind." Mine said crossing her arms, "If it really has five different sight abilities, try one of the other ones." "Okay then." Tatsumi said closing his eyes again. When he opened his eyes again he started stumbling back and screaming. After a moment, the teigu started to reject him. "Quick, he's being rejected!" I shouted running up and yanking it off his head. "What happened?" Tatsumi said with a woosy voice, "I suddenly feel tired." "It's the compatibility," Najeda said, "It seems this teigu isn't suited to you." "You were thinking about how uncool it looked or something, weren't you." Mine said, "The user's first impression of the teigu is important you know?" "Guh." Tatsumi said. "Mine," I said lifting Tatsumi to his feet, "Tatsumi is a fighter, this teigu is used more for information gathering or scouting. So it makes sense the teigu rejected him.
"This will be sent back to the Revolutionary HQ then." Najeda said as I tossed her the teigu, "It'll need to be analysed so it can become part of our fighting force." "While we are an assassination team," Akame started, "collecting the lost teigu is one of our submissions." "We'll occasionally run into enemies or targets who possess a teigu like Zank did," I added, "so upon their death, we take them, even the weakest of teigu are invaluable." "So the more we have," Tatsumi siad, coming to his senses, "the stronger the Army becomes or something right?" "Correct." Najeda said grabbing a book, "You should read this book of the known teigu." Tatsumi started thumbing through the book, looking at the teigu we had records of. "Najeda," I said, "It appears my brother, Mudai, is alive. I'm not sure where he is, but I believe that he would like to join the Revolutionary Army, if not Night Raid." "I thought your tribe was eradicated." Najeda said as Akame looked down. "All of us except Mudai and I," I responded, "he was on a mission while the Elite Seven attacked our home." "And how do you know he is alive?" Najeda asked, intrigued as to what my answer would be. "I received a vision from my father and other members of the Gravekeepers." I responded.
"Wow," Tatsumi said closing the book, "there are so many, and this is just a small portion of them right?" "The ones in this book are only the teigu we know about." Najeda said. "Which one is the strongest?" Tatsumi asked. "The user and compatibility change," Najeda said covering her eyepatch, "but if I had to say, the Ice manipulation teigu is what I think. Luckily for us, it's user is currently busy conquering the northern tribes." "How is the current user," I asked, hatred filling my mind, "There were many of my brethren encased in ice when I returned, but the 'chief' I killed knew nothing about it." "Her name is Esdeath." Najeda said as Tatsumi was confused. "Why was she sent north?" he asked. "It's because the people of the north are very strong," Lubbock said, "they even have their own hero." "Oh!" Tatsumi said, "Even I know about him!" "He seems strong," I said cracking a smile, "I doubt we should worry, but I wouldn't put their defeat in the realm of possibility." "Even with Esdeath," Najeda added, "it'll take at least a year or two to take the North."
"Fu," Tatsumi laughed, "fufufufufu, the stronger the enemy, the better! We're collecting more and more teigu after all." "You're suddenly cheerful, huh?" Leone said, "Why is that all of a sudden?" "It's better that he's excited," I started, "rather than him be afraid." "Well, this world is filled with teigu that have unknown abilities, right?" Tatsumi said, "The reason I'm lively is this! Having just seen these abilities, maybe, just maybe, there may be a teigu that has the ability to bring the dead back to life! Right!?" We all stared at Tatsumi, knowing the truth, but not wanting to say it. "If there is," Tatsumi said with a shining in his eyes, "I may be able to bring Sayo and Ieyasu back! That's why I'm going to do all I can to recover as many teigu as pos--" "You can't." Bulat said as I walked to Tatsumi, "Aniki?" Tatsumi asked. "A teigu that can resurrect the dead doesn't exist." Bulat answered. "In this world," I added, "You only live once, I'm sorry." "How," Tatsumi said, sadness in his voice, "HOW CAN YOU KNOW THAT!? YOU CAN'T! NOT UNTIL WE'VE FOUND THEM, RIGHT!?" "TATSUMI," I said, "if I could find that teigu, my family would still be here!" "The current Emperor is a good example." Akame added, "If such a teigu existed, the first Emperor would still rule." "It was because he knew that he would someday have to die," Bulat said, "That's why he created the teigu in the first place, right?" Tatsumi looked at us all in shock trying to find the words to say. "Don't hang your hopes on that." Akame said, "if you do, an enemy will use that weakness of mind against you. And you will be killed." "Remember when you told me that Zank messed with minds," I said placing my hand on Tatsumi's shoulder, "Zank knew this fact, and he would use it on his foes." Tatsumi then ran outside. "I'll be back." Sheele said before she walked outside. "I'm going to find Tatsumi." I said following the two.
When I walked out I saw Tatsumi sitting at the graves of his friends, I listened to what he said. "I knew it." He said while crying, "I'll never see them again, I should have given up, but, I just." "Tatsumi," Sheele said before she hugged him, "We'll keep this a secret from everyone else, it's okay to cry as much as you need." After that, I was dumbfounded. I see now. I thought walking up to them. "I see why Najeda said Sheele was more experienced." I said startling Tatsumi, "Her heart is by far the largest of any member of Night Raid." I then looked up the stars, seeing the dipper in my chest. "The stars sure are beautiful tonight." I said as Tatsumi and Sheele looked up. "What's that collection of stars? Tatsumi asked pointing at the dipper, "I know it has the North star in it." "It's the Little Dipper," I answered, holding my stomach, "it's also the shape of the scar on my torso." "I think that small star next to the North star is beautiful." Sheele said as I realized what she said. "You can see it?" I asked, "Yes." Sheele answered, "Is that a problem?" "That star," I said as tears formed in my eyes, "they call it the star the presages death. The person who spots it has death visit them within a year. I would always look into the stars, waiting for that star to be revealed to me, I never thought I would have to explain it to a friend." "I figured my time would come eventually." Sheele said with a smile, "I guess we'll have to adapt and overcome." "Sheele..." Tatsumi said as he started crying. "Come on boys," Sheele assured, "let's go inside."
