Chapter 9

It's been a bit since I've written for this book. Sorry about that but here's another chapter to continue the plot. No hints for the selected pokémon rival this time though.

The ground was damp and the sun only partially shined into her face. When she opened her eyes, she was confused as to why she was in a so much overgrown underbrush. Sitting right next to her as still as a statue was her dusk form Lycanroc, Rei. He seemed tired and hadn't noticed that (y/n) was now awake.

"Rei? Hey buddy, do you know where we are?" (y/n) asked. Rei immediately snapped his attention to her and went to her side. (Y/n) sat up and took in her surroundings.

"Quick question, how long have we been here?" (y/n) asked when she realized her own fatigue. Rei pawed the ground three times to answer. He was rather smart of course and could answer yes or no questions as well.

"Three days?! No, I need to get back home. Everyone must be worried and Moon...she's a threat that needs to be dealt with," (y/n) said as she stood up.

Rei suddenly went on defense and looked in a particular direction. Rei suddenly darted forward and whatever he was after began running away.

"Rei wait! Come back," (y/n) called as she ran after him and whatever he was following. As she did though, (y/n) began to hear someone saying something, or at least that's what she thought it was.

"Oh no, it saw me. I won't be able to outrun it at this point!" a panicked voice said. (Y/n) couldn't pinpoint its source though.

"Hey, stop!" (y/n) called and then she heard the voice again. She wanted to know who was speaking.

"There's a person too! That can only mean...no, please. I need to get away. I have to get away," the same panicked voice said and again, (y/n) could not determine its source.

They were leaving the overgrown area and heading into what looked like an abandoned city. There were tropical plants everywhere despite this fact. They covered buildings and parts of the road and even street signs. (Y/n) could now see exactly what Rei was chasing and she nearly stopped in her tracks.

"Hau, stop! Wait!" (y/n) called. He didn't listen though and kept running away until he reached a nearby building that seemed to be a pokémon center. He tried to pry the doors open but they wouldn't budge. When he realized that Rei was catching up to him he panicked and ran again.

"I said stop!" (y/n) yelled as she ran faster to catch up to Hau and Rei. Hau went to the next building, which seemed to be an apparel shop. Again Hau tried the door but it wouldn't budge so he went through the broken window. (Y/n) heard him yelp which wasn't a good sign. Rei stood at the window when he got there and looked back at (y/n) who went to the door.

"Rei, use Stone Edge on this door," (y/n) said. Rei did so without hesitation and it was then that she heard the voice again.

"No, no, I don't want it to end like this. I have to live," the voice said. This time, (y/n) had no doubt about this voice's source. Rei used Stone Edge on the door causing it to be demolished and (y/n) went right in.

Hau had curled himself into a corner near the window. He started to cry once he saw her and he tried to back into the corner even further although he couldn't. He was also hurt. The glass from the window that had been on the floor had cut on of his legs and a piece of glass was still lodged into his arm.

"Please, let me go. I swear I won't say anything, I don't even have anyone to tell, just let me go. Please don't kill me," Hau pleaded as he cried even more. Rei was about to walk over to him but (y/n) stopped him.

"What are you talking about Hau? I would never even think of doing something so horrible," (y/n) said in the nicest way that she could. Hau didn't seem to believe her and still cried as he eyed her every movement.

"Just let me go," Hau pleaded. He didn't seem like his normal self but that much was already obvious.

"Hey, calm down. I told you already, I won't hurt you," (y/n) said as she edged closer to him. Hau flinched seemed even more on edge.

"Who exactly do you think I am that I would try harming you?" (y/n) decided to ask.

"What should I do? She's probably trying to trick me," said the voice again.

"I'm not trying to trick you. I'm not an enemy. I need you to answer my question," (y/n) said. Hau looked at her in shock.

"You're one of Moon's people. You're here to take me out," Hau said. He seemed entirely serious about his words.

"No, I'm not. I'm trying to stop Moon. She came through an ultra wormhole and attacked me, Gladion, Lillie, Sun, and yourself. From what I can tell, you either don't remember any of that or this isn't even the same world so you don't know me," (y/n) said. Hau stopped crying and looked at her strangely.

"So you aren't going to hurt me?" Hau asked, still unsure if she could be trusted or not.

"No, I'm going to help you. You've got some cuts. I'll take care of them," (y/n) said.

"What about that?" Hau asked, pointing at Rei who was sitting and watching the whole ordeal. The pokémon sat near the door wagging his tail although he kept still.

"He's safe. His name is Rei. He's my pokémon," (y/n) said as she gestured for him walk over to her.

"You can control him like Moon's people can? Is that how you knew what I was thinking?" Hau asked. He was starting to trust her which was good.

"I actually don't know how I was able to hear your thoughts but I don't control Rei. He's my pokémon partner. We respect each other and he does what I tell him to most of the time. He can be a little stubborn though," (y/n) said with a smile. Hau had calmed down quite a lot now and stared at Rei.

"So he isn't like the rest of them. Is it because of his color? That's the only one that I've seen like that," Hau said as he used his unhurt arm to try his tears.

"What do you mean? He's rare I suppose but there are three different kinds of Lycanroc forms," (y/n) said.

"Lycanroc? What's a Lycanroc?" Hau asked. His question truly shocked her but things were already strange enough at that point.

"You really don't know then. It must be pretty bad here. How about this. We'll focus on taking care of your wounds and then we can talk about it a little later. Does that sound good?" (y/n) said. Hau nodded but still kept an eye on Rei who was wagging his tail and looking at Hau with his head slightly tilted. (Y/n) went into her bag and pulled out the one thing that she hoped could life this Hau's spirits.

"What is that?" he asked. (Y/n) was sure then that this wasn't the same Alola she was used to.

"It's a malasada. The you from my version of Alola loves these so I thought you might too. Plus I'm starving and I wouldn't want to eat in front of you without sharing," (y/n) said as she offered Hau the malasada. He cautiously took it from her and to a small bite from it.

"It's good," he said. "Isn't it? I knew you'd like it," (y/n) said as she got two more, one for herself and one for Rei. After the three of them ate, (y/n) used whatever she could to take care of Hau's wounds. The few clothing items that were left in the abandoned store were useful for bandages of a sort.

"You should get some rest. It will help you heal," (y/n) suggested once she was done.

"It's not safe to sleep, ever," Hau said. He still hadn't come out of the corner.

"Rei will protect us. I assure you that you won't come to any harm as long as he's here," (y/n) said as she pet Rei who leaned into her touch. Hau watched Rei's reactions and looked at him curiously.

"Do you want to pet him? His fur is soft despite him being a rock type. Just be careful about the actual rocks hidden in his fur," (y/n) said. Hau gave a small nod and (y/n) let Rei go to him. Rei curled up next to Hau and rested his head in Hau's lap which startled him.

"Go ahead. He seems to like you," (y/n) said with a smile. Hau proceeded to pet Rei who didn't object. (Y/n) went to the other side of Rei and sat down.

Eventually, Hau and Rei fell asleep but (y/n) stayed awake. This place, this Alola, was dangerous. (Y/n) knew that she needed to go home but if this place was so bad that Hau had feared for his life, she would need to do something to save this Alola even if it meant staying longer than she wanted to.
