Chapter 3
I might have gotten the time skip mixed up in the last chapter so I went back and changed it. It's three years, not four. Sorry about that...

(Y/n) couldn't take it anymore. As soon as she let Gladion go, she couldn't help but cry a little. She'd missed him helping her out with the pokémon at Aether. She missed their occasional visits to the Malasada Shop with Hau where Gladion's reactions were always hilarious. Heck, she just missed seeing Gladion. He was startled by her sudden outburst of tears.
"Hey, (y/n) don't cry. Please don't. You know I don't know how to handle situations like this," Gladion said. (Y/n) almost laughed at his last statement as she dried her own tears, knowing well that Gladion really didn't know how to handle such situations.
"Sorry, I guess I missed you a lot more than I thought I did," (y/n) said. There was a temporary silence between them, which happened quite a lot, until Rei began to growl a little. It was so low that (y/n) could hardly hear it and it was directed behind (y/n).
Gladion's expression changed from concern to completely plain as he looked in the direction that Rei was growling. (Y/n) did the same after petting Rei on the head to get him to stop growling. It was Lusamine making her way to them.
"Gladion, aren't you going to visit Lillie before you go? She'd be happy to see you," Lusamine said to Gladion once she was close enough to them.
"I already told you, I'm staying for a bit so of course I'll go see Lillie before I leave. She's my sister after all," Gladion said.
"Oh, right. I seem to have forgotten that part but I actually came here for (y/n)," Lusamine spoke. She seemed to have no underlying intent this time.
"Oh, you did? Do you need something?" (y/n) asked. It was her job regardless of Lusamine's intent but knowing she had an honest job to give made things a little better.
"Yes, actually. I need you to take a look at Gladion's Silvally. Gladion brought him back here because he seems to be sick and I thought you'd be the best person for the job. You are the best when it comes to working with pokémon around here," Lusamine said. (Y/n) hurt feelings from earlier completely went away after Lusamine said that.
"Sure thing. I'll do that right away. Sorry Gladion. I have to go back to work," (y/n) said as she began to leave but Gladion stopped her.
"Wait, you work here? Since when?" Gladion inquired with slight surprise. It then occurred to (y/n) that he had no idea that Aether was her technical home now.
"Uh, ever since a couple of months after you left. I kind of live here now too," (y/n) answered.
"If you're going to help Silvally then can I come as well? I might be able to help," Gladion said. He didn't seem to phased by what she said. Either that or he hid it well.
"Sure, I don't see why not. Silvally is your pokémon anyway," (y/n) said with a nod.
"Well you two take care of Silvally okay," Lusamine said as she left them. She didn't seem to have any problems with (y/n) now.
"Sure thing. I bet I can cure him in one day!" (y/n) called after Lusamine. The Aether president returned her declaration with a wave of approval.
"You don't know what's wrong with him though. I've taken him to two different pokémon professors who still couldn't figure it out," Gladion said as they both walked to the elevator. Rei wasn't far behind them.
"Do you know where he's being held?" (y/n) asked. Her mind was already switching into scientist mode.
"Yeah. He's in one of the labs downstairs. Wicke told me to take him there and a pokémon expert was supposed to see about him," Gladion replied.
"Good then that means that he's likely in my lab. Wicke usually sends hurt or sick pokémon down there for me to look after," (y/n) commented as she pressed the button on the elevator to send them down to the lab area.
"Can you describe to me the symptoms that Silvally has been displaying?" (y/n) asked as they walked towards her lab. Her mind had switched into work mode now.
"Uh, yeah. He hasn't been wanting to eat anything and he's been seeming sad all of the time. He also tends to stay in his pokéball a lot when he usually likes staying out of it much like Rei does. Occasionally, he doesn't even listen to me," Gladion said with a little bit of worry.
"And you say that two pokémon professors couldn't figure this out?" (y/n) asked. Gladion nodded in reply. "I'm surprised. Pokémon professors supposedly have far more knowledge on pokémon than I do and yet I've already figured out what's wrong with Silvally."
"How? You haven't even seen Silvally yet," Gladion said with surprise. Of course he had never known from experience that (y/n)'s diagnosing skills were pretty outstanding. He was gone for four years after all and their letters to one another were never that detailed.
"I don't need to. Those symptoms were all I needed to diagnose him. It seems that Silvally has a bad case of homesickness," (y/n) said just as she opened the door to her lab and walked in. Gladion closed the door after Rei entered. Silvally's pokéball was sitting on (y/n)'s desk.
"Alright, here's what we're going to do to test this out. You'll need to get Silvally to come out of his pokéball for at least thirty seconds while the camera on my computer is on. I'll be outside so that he doesn't see me. I doubt he'll recognize my lab to be Aether. Once you've done that, send Silvally back and come outside to tell me what happens. I'll review the footage to see for myself too. Then we'll move on to step two depending on what I see and hear. Got it?" (y/n) explained.
"Yeah, I get it," Gladion said. (Y/n) turned her desktop towards the middle of the room so that it could record Gladion's interaction with Silvally and then exited the lab along with Rei and waited outside. For a good two minutes, she stood there patiently waiting and then Gladion came outside of the lab to meet her.
"Still the same as what I told you. He wouldn't even come out of his pokéball at all," Gladion said with a little disappointment.
"Don't worry. We'll fix this. How about I try. You can come too just so he'll know that you're still here," (y/n) said. She, Gladion, and Rei went back into the lab. This time (y/n) tried to get Silvally to come out of his pokéball.
"Silvally? If you come out of your pokéball (y/n) here will give you a rainbow pokébean," (y/n) cooed. Almost immediately, Silvally emerged from the pokéball in high spirits and tackled (y/n) to the ground. He licked her face to which she laughed in response. Gladion just seemed surprised.
"Okay, Silvally. That's enough. Come on, get off," (y/n) said as she avoided Silvally and stood up. Silvally went to her and nuzzled his head up to her, signaling that he wanted to be petted. (Y/n) petted Silvally and gave him the rainbow pokébean that she promised.
"How did you do that?" Gladion asked, referring to her getting Silvally to come out of his pokéball.
"I didn't, Silvally did. He was homesick so he likely just wanted to at least see someone from Alola. I just happened to be that person that he saw other than you of course," (y/n) said as she continued to pet Silvally. When she spoke to Gladion though, Silvally looked towards him and went to him.
"You feeling better now?" Gladion asked as Silvally allowed Gladion to pet him. Silvally got behind Gladion and then pushed him towards (y/n) which surprised them both.
"He seems to be trying to get you to do something...or maybe say something? It seems like he wants you to talk to me," (y/n) concluded. She studied the behavioral patterns of many pokémon and knew well that they were capable of meaning many things through their actions.
"Rei, can you talk to Silvally and ask what's he trying to do?" (y/n) asked Rei. Gladion watched in shock as Rei did just that. Rei and Silvally seemed to be having a full conversation too!
"Can you actually understand them?" Gladion asked her as they watched their pokémon interact.
"Nope, but Silvally was homesick so talking to a pokémon from his home would likely help with his therapy. Now all we need to so is take him to somewhere nice and relaxing where he can chill. Then he'll be cured of his homesickness," (y/n) said to Gladion while Silvally and Rei still spoke to each other.
"But how do we figure out what Silvally was trying to get me to do?" Gladion asked. He seemed genuinely lost on the matter.
"We don't. There are just some things that I can't do. Perhaps if I knew what they were saying, then I could figure out what that was but I can't talk to pokémon like that," (y/n) said with a slight laugh. "Alrighty you two. Let's go," (y/n) said as she headed out of the lab. Gladion, Silvally, and Rei followed behind her as she led the way.
