Surrender This Curse

Too many winter's lines

etched in stone and found by the sun

stretch out across my weathered soul,

my beaten skin, and my life, undone

Falling Shadows, like autumn leaves

Are the only friends I can trust

Who hide my heart in their darkened cold

And soothe my fears of the calling dust

Too many subtle tricks

Whispered on winds and half heard in passing

Call me as I walk among the spirits

Who while living; dreamt of the everlasting

Falling sun, upon the mountains

You sting my eyes and fill them with tears

You expose my regret in your unsettling warmth

Yet losing you is still among my greatest fears

Too many people's feet

Walk their way around my path

Much faster than they used to, these days

So many jumbled voices and then I hear this laugh.

An echoing laughter that rolls into my heart

A face I know, and a smile I love

My eyes open up and my lips as I remember

This laughter waits somewhere above

Too many memories lost

Until I find the picture in my pocket still

Allowing me to dream for a moment

While standing on this cemetery hill

Lying down and looking into the sun

I sing a song and surrender this curse

One thing I ask, if the sun must leave,

That this time, I can go first.
