I felt a shadow pass over

I tried to lift my head and see

But the darkness of the night

Concealed its eyes from me

Its breath like death

Its voice like pain

It tried desperately to restrain me

In fear

I held my false security

over me like a blanket

I thought it through like a man

As I sunk in like a child

But man or mouse

Alone in the house

Any shadow intimidates

The strongest soul

It was still there

I felt its weight

Hanging near in a corner

Watching

So I pulled back the blanket

I stood to my feet

I faced it quickly and

Did not hesitate

It tried to hide

But I knew this game well

Fear finds its way to a heart

In concealed places

So I walked to the door

And opened it wide

There was no place left

For my fears to hide

The room was still

The air like stone

Where the light had

Chased out the unknown

Now I lay me down to sleep

I give the light my eyes to keep

If shadows fall before I wake

let not this will of mine break
