This most definitely wasn't what I had expected when I left the house this morning.
What did I actually expect to happen today? Probably just my daily routine. Certainly not living out my childhood horrors, yet here I am. Slumped over my desk, unable to close my eyes, ever if all I can really see is the pile of books laying next to me. "I need to sort them" goes a voice inside my head, and I immediately cringe at the thought. I just found out I've been living a lie, do I not deserve to be at least a little dramatic?
-Mark – I almost jumped at the voice that appeared seemingly out of nowhere. I don't get to pretend to be startled for long, as my brain immediately recognises the person – We're gonna need you to get back out there. Are you alright?
I lazily lift my head up, and confirm the earlier suspicions. There she stood, in all her glory – Diana the head librarian, my supervisor. We've known each other for three years now, and her significant style became a familiar part of my life. Point is, today she didn't look familiar at all. Maybe, just maybe due to the black horns stemming from her forehead.
It wasn't something that could be missed be missed or ignored. The horns immediately drew my attention every time I got a look at Diana today, so much so that I almost didn't notice the lively tail. Well, It's not really my fault – they were covered in glitter.
-I'm taking this as a no. You have a headache? – Now her tone seemed a bit more worried, but it's easy to spot the underlying annoyance. She didn't like it when people took long breaks.
-A bit. – I admit, running a hand through my hair like I could shrug the pain off of my head. – Surprised you don't have one... - I add in a murmur, hell knows why. Or maybe it doesn't, because Diana looks just as confused as me.
-Why would I?
-Doesn't matter.
I lift myself up, finally shagging off the weariness which overtook my body out of nowhere. With a whine, I turn to Diana, who's eyeing me with her classy resting bitch face.
-Want some painkillers?
-No, I'm fine.
A comfortable silence fills the room as I stretch my arms. Of course I, the master of social interactions couldn't let that slip, and had to make it awkward.
-I can see your horns, you know.
-...Oh. Oh you can?
-Surely enough.
-Oh. – The confusion the previously clouded my mind seemingly chose Diana as it's next target. - ...Do they look good?
I sigh, pinching the bridge of my nose. Honestly, what did I even expect...
-...Yes. Yes they do. I like the glitter.
