Survive I must
It's been a week since the incident involving the removal of the sun and in its place something else. Scientists called it the dark star. They say the sun just ran out of heat. It seemed ridiculous at the time and no one thought through the consequences. Now, I'm freezing my butt off in my, what used to be, school. The government turned schools into shelters. In order to stay warm, we burn textbooks and papers. Only, I know eventually all the public libraries will be forced to use their books to burn as well. That, I wasn't so okay with. Reading was one of the only things I enjoyed when the earth was normal.
"Ellie, do you think we're actually going to survive this?" I asked my older sister.
"Do you want my positive everything's okay answer or do you want my truthful answer."
"You don't believe we'll make it?"
"We have literally no heat sources and little food. Do you really think deep down we are going to survive?"
I feared the truth. We were all destined to die and of all places I didn't want to die in school surrounded by everyone in my community. Thankfully, cannibalism was a last resort and we hadn't gotten to that point. I pulled out my last possession from under a blanket. It was a copy of The Hobbit. Everyone else around me was keeping to themselves and trying to find a way to entertain each other. Phones hadn't been able to survive the cold so now everyone stared gloomily.
I opened the book and stared at the words. I had randomly opened to the page with one of my favorite quotes from the book.
"I am looking for someone to share in an adventure that I am arranging, and it's very difficult to find anyone.'
I should think so — in these parts! We are plain quiet folk and have no use for adventures. Nasty disturbing uncomfortable things! Make you late for dinner!"
Oh Bilbo. If only I could trade you and I could go on some amazing and exciting adventure. Staying in the place will either kill me or make me go insane. I continued to read until it was supper time. For supper we got small portions of random foods. Tonight, I got half a breast of grilled chicken and two pieces of asparagus . Not filling but enough to satisfy.
"Liz, you need to get some rest. Don't think I haven't notice you staying up all night." Ellie told me.
"All right." I really didn't want to but knew I needed to. "Night sis. Don't go to live with Mom and Dad when I'm asleep. I don't want to be the only one to make it through this."
"Oh Liz, that's not something to joke about. Don't worry. I'll try to make it through tonight."
I fell asleep dreaming of Bilbo and going on adventures and when I woke up, I saw my mother's face.
"Welcome Sweetie."
