Not your average washing machine

We all have those little things we have to do around the house. Clean the bathroom, wash dishes, clean up dog poop. Mine is laundry. Don't get me wrong it's better than picking up dog crap, but the washer and dryer are deep in our dark basement. It seemed no matter how many lights you turned on, there was always darkness by the laundry machines. The washer also made weird noises every time it ran.

My normal routine would be to get down, put the clothing in, and get upstairs as quickly as possible. Then, when the clothing was down run back downstairs and repeat until I was down. Today was just like any other day. I ran down the stairs with my basket of laundry.

"I'm leaving to take your sister to dance practice, Abby." My mom yelled from the top of the steps.

"See ya Mom!" I yelled back. I heard the garage door slam and turned back to my task at hand. The washing machine started to hum and water filled the machine quickly. "What the heck?" I mumbled.

No one else was in the house and the washing machine started on its own. The water rose out of the machine and started filling the room quicker than possible. The humming got louder and louder until something flew into the room. The room was knee deep in water and a freaking sea serpent was swimming in it. Fish started spouting from the machine as well. "What is going on!" I screamed. Just when I thought things couldn't weirder, a mermaid pushes out from the top of the machine. The room is now filled to my stomach.

"What. Are. You. Doing. In. My. Basement?" I questioned the mermaid. She had sea green hair that matched her shells and tail.

"To give you a taste of what was never offered to you."

"Are you speaking in riddles or something?" I asked.

"No Abby. You're adopted. You were born from a mermaid and a normal man. You were put up for adoption for safety."

"I don't like that you know my name, my adoption, and that you have a pet sea serpent."

"Her name is Tasha."

"I don't care! Why you here?"

"I already told you. Why won't you accept it?"

"Because it's crazy!" I yelled. "Get out of my house!"

"Come along Tasha." The mermaid muttered. "We'll have try again later. Don't forget to at least think about us Abby!"

"I'm content where I am now leave. Don't forget to take all the fish and water along. I don't want to have to explain to my mom why the basement is flooded." How could what she was saying be possible? I asked myself as I continued my task of laundry.
