Chapter 25: What Can't Be Explained...
Aimee and Stefan were in separate vehicles. They could not stop worrying about each other. The way Stefan acted, Aimee was sure they would beat him up, and just the thought of Leo being anywhere near Aimee enraged Stefan.
Leo was breathing down Aimee's neck. He had cuffed her and they were sitting in the back seat while Ponytail was driving. The road went from tar to gravel or brick. Aimee could feel the shift beneath her feet. She tried not to make any eye contact with Leo. Her eyes were still red.
Back in the vehicle Stefan was stuck in, he felt the sudden difference on the ground under them. Their vehicle was directly behind the one Aimee was in. He did not care what happened to him, or if he never saw Aimee again, as long as he knew that she would be safe. But he did not know if she was and that made him uneasy. Stefan was sharing the back seat with two extremely muscular men. They looked as though they could have been bodybuilders, but they did not intimidate him. He did not know how long they were driving and from where he was sitting, he could not identify the driver.
It felt like a while since they were at the restaurant. Aimee's wrist was almost painless and probably would have been if it were not for the tight handcuffs.
"Oh, would you stop with the tears already?" blurted Leo.
Aimee shot him a look, she had nothing to say and so she said nothing. Leo took his index finger and his thumb and lightly squeezed her chin. Aimee instantly pulled her head away.
"Don't touch me!" she screamed.
Leo laughed at her, he even mocked her. So she turned and spat him right in the face. He cursed and his arm lifted into the air.
"Leo!" Ponytail looked over her shoulder. "Leave her alone. And there is nothing wrong with teenage girls," she tested - he had insulted her while cursing.
Leo sat back in his seat, aggravated. Aimee motioned herself slightly to the middle of the car. Ponytail had her focus on the road again. Aimee was trying to get a better glimpse of her face.
"Thank you," she said, making Ponytail look to the back again.
"Sure, no problem," she half smiled. "He's always getting on everyone's case. Thinks he's the big dog. I think he needs a leash."
Aimee laughed. Leo actually made a sound that was similar to a growling Rottweiler.
"What's your name, anyway?" queried Aimee.
"Celeste," she looked over her shoulder again. "Celeste, Chastity, Williams. Any idea what I nabbed you for, Aimee?" she questioned.
"I have a few ideas," replied Aimee. "You work for the organisation called AIM, right?"
Celeste hummed. "Well, I don't work for them," she verified, with her eyes on the road. "They're paying me for this. Abba wants you in France real bad. She's gonna send her men to bring you back."
"What?! Why?!" that was the last thing Aimee wanted.
"Look, she didn't tell me much," she affirmed. "All I know is that she was willing to pay me half of what her organisation is worth to get you in one piece."
"You said she only gave you two million dollars!" Leo chimed in.
Celeste rolled her eyes. "No one was talking to you, bub," she uttered.
"What about Stefan?" Aimee asked nervously.
"The boy? He'll be alright as long as he doesn't piss anyone off," she replied.
Aimee crossed her fingers. Stefan tended to anger almost anyone he met, even if it was unintentional. Like Molly, for one. The vehicle stopped behind a warehouse-like building. Aimee could hear the tyres of the other cars screeching to a halt behind them. Celeste was the first to jump out, leaving her door open. She let Aimee out through hers and Leo would have followed, if she had not slammed the door in his face. He punched the glass window. It did not do much; they were reinforced. At that, Celeste simply hunched her shoulders.
She had her hand on Aimee's arm and walked her along. For once Aimee did not mind being taken; a part of her trusted Celeste. Another part of her wanted to run away, but that would only cause more trouble. Aimee scrutinised the area. The other five vehicles stopped behind theirs and many men were climbing out. She waited to see Stefan's face, but it was nowhere to be seen.
"Where's Stefan?" she panicked, still watching the men at their cars.
"Don't worry, they're not allowed to hurt him," responded Celeste with a wishful, uncertain sort of cringe.
They approached a large door at the back of the barn-like building, and Celeste used her free hand to let herself in.
"I'm not going in there," Aimee halted.
"You're gonna have to," said Celeste.
"Not until I see Stefan!"
"You'll see him soon, don't worry," Leo caught up to them.
He shoved Aimee into the barn house, causing her to tumble on the ground and he laughed that villainous laugh of his.
Celeste cursed. "Leo, you don't just push people on the ground!" she exclaimed. "And she's supposed to be alive and unharmed or we get nothing."
She glanced at Aimee and reached her arm out, helping her to her feet with a smile. Before Aimee could thank her, Celeste marched towards the other men and their vehicles. Leo rolled his eyes and cupped his mouth with his hands, in Celeste's direction.
"Can I just tie her up now?" he hollered.
A hand gesture from Celeste and he was pushing Aimee forward. He was already on Aimee's nerves, but she was taking a break from bravado. Inside the barn house were cobwebs, empty barrels, haystacks and stairs to an underground cellar. That was where they were going. Aimee expected wine barrels and maybe a bar, but it looked as though the place was cleared out beforehand. There was nothing but the columns that held up the upper floor boards and thick ropes in one bundle. Leo sat her down against one of the wooden columns and walked towards the bundle of rope.
"I guess those are for me," Aimee whispered to herself. "I'm already handcuffed," she remarked, "is it really necessary to tie me up too?"
Leo looked at her for a moment, but did not reply. He threw one of the thick ropes over his shoulder and neared her again. His face moved to hers and he sneered.
"I either rope you up," he paused, "or I beat you up 'til you can't walk no more."
"Oh, I don't think Celeste will like that very much," she raised her chin. Her bravado was back.
His nostrils flared and he was growling like before. He looked like a wild dog with his shaggy black hair, brown eyes and frown lines on his forehead. Aimee watched him; she was not daunted at all. He removed her cuffs, wrapped her arms around the column behind her and began tying an extremely constricted knot.
"Watch it!" exclaimed Aimee.
He did not respond.
At that moment, Aimee heard a commotion upstairs. It sounded like Celeste was yelling at her men, but she could not quite make out what she was saying. Some of the men shouted back at her. And then there was a gunshot, some more commotion, and then silence. Aimee jolted at the sound of the gun, Leo mumbled from behind her, telling her to sit still. She heard footsteps shortly after. Celeste was coming downstairs.
"I said you don't hurt him!" she scolded. "Now bring him along, gently!" she stepped onto the wooden floorboards.
"Stefan," Aimee whispered worriedly.
Leo was finally done tying that knot. He pulled himself up with his left hand on the column and stood in front of Aimee with his arms crossed. She did not take her eyes off the staircase. She heard more footsteps. The clacks of heavy boots coming down the stairs, but she could not see anyone yet. Don't panic, Aimee, Stefan's alright. She repeated in her head.
There was no back on the staircase. The wooden steps were held up by the wall and a single rail. The steps were the only things in the room that light shone upon. Aimee spotted two men and Stefan. They were carrying him down the stairs; he was not walking. His legs dragged on each step. They neared the light, but Aimee still could not see their faces, or most importantly, Stefan's face as their backs were facing her direction. Aimee's eyes were glossy; she could not wait any longer. She needed to see him. She needed to make sure he was not hurt.
"Hand him over," Celeste ordered. They passed his body to her. She wrapped his arm around her shoulder, bringing his face into the light.
"No," murmured Aimee; the left side of his face was a variety of light purples and blues.
Celeste brought him closer. "Leo, tie him –"
"You said he wouldn't get hurt!" she screamed, tears rolling down her cheeks.
His eyes were open, but he was not moving. His motionless body was passed over to Leo. He wasted no time in tying him up.
"He wasn't supposed to," said Celeste, her voice was hard and serious. "If it makes you feel any better, I shot the guy who did that with his own gun."
"No, why would that make me feel better?" she asked rhetorically. "What happened?" Aimee focused her attention on Stefan's face.
No one answered, but a part of Aimee did not want to know anyway; his bruises were getting worse. Suddenly, there were light sounds above them. Celeste was halfway back to the staircase when she glanced up. Leo and Aimee looked above them simultaneously.
It was raining.
Everyone continued what they were doing as though someone had pressed a Play button on them, except for Stefan. Soon, Leo had tied him to the beam and followed Celeste up the stairs. They shut the barn door, and their only source of light, on the way out.
Aimee and Stefan were alone in complete darkness. Aimee watched as he slowly drifted out of consciousness. She could only see his silhouette, but she figured he was no longer awake. The rain became heavier above them. Aimee wondered if the AIM soldiers and Celeste were still there; she had not heard any vehicles drive away. They're waiting until Abba's lemmings arrive. The only sound Aimee's ears could identify was the drops of rain on the roof. It was faint, it helped her calm down. And then she was so calm that she fell asleep.
