Chapter 29: The First Blow

Sorry I haven't updated in ages. I was at camp this week. It was pretty fun.

Picture of Sumer warriors above.

Thank you so much for 8k. :D

Sometimes he had felt so filled with sorrow that he couldn't move. He couldn't do anything. Why did this have to happen to him? Of all people in the world, why him. Why did the Gods have to take his brother from him for the last three months.

Ahkmenrah felt incomplete now, but more complete than he had been for ages. The flames of their relationship had died, but now there was a small spark and they were coming together again.

Kahmunrah had even called him a baboon. He could feel themselves reverting back their usual selves. It was a gradual process but it was working.

Slowly he walked up and down the hall ways and closed his eyes, listening sweetly to the birdsong outside in the gardens. Then he grinned like a child, he was wearing simple clothes, something that would make the officials angry for he wasn't even wearing his crown. Then Ramses came running up with little Kovu bounding next to him.

"Ahk!!!" Ramses screeched.

"What is it Ramses?"

"Father says he is going to the edge of the city for business and I'm going to go too!" Said Ramses dancing and jumping around.

Ahkmenrah laughed. His light green eyes sparkling at his cousin's childish behavior.

"Calm down Ramses" Ahkmenrah said cheerily "It's only the edge of the city"

"But I've never been that far before." protested the little boy.

"Alright Ramses. Trust me you are going to have a lot fun."

The little boy took his cousin's hand and walked with him through the gardens. Sabra was a good distance away, not wanting to disturb anything. Ramses noticed this and dragged Ahkmenrah over to where Sabra was twirling her knife. She put knife quickly in her sandal straps and greeted Ramses, who then slipped his little hand into hers.

She really wasn't supposed to do this. But she couldn't shake away his hand. And besides...he reminded her of Gavriel far too much.

Gavriel chatted about this and that and sweetly described how his trip would take place. Finally the sun was setting and Sabra's replacement had arrived. She quickly gave Ramses a hug and a small kiss on the cheek. Then as she stood up almost about to give Ahkmenrah a hug but stopped with her arms ever so slightly away from her body. Ahkmenrah in the same position. The both had the same thought.

This would be scandalous. There was already many snide and sexist comments made about Sabra behind her back. There didn't need to be anymore.

That was partially true but really their hearts seemed to beat faster every time the got closer. They were only three feet away from each other but any closer their hearts would explode. These feelings were rather new to them both. So instead they said their goodbyes at distance and Sabra left.

The new guard by the name of Rabaka, a dark skinned man who had faced the life of a fighting slave in Nubia, took his position beside the walls of the garden.

Finally Ramses got on Ahkmenrah's shoulders and whispered.

"Are you going to make babies with her?"

Ahkmenrah blushed.

"When did you learn this Ramses?"

"Ammon told me yesterday"

Ahkmenrah recalled his other cousin, Ramses' thirteen year old brother.

Ramses continued talking. "He says that when a man and a woman..."

"Ramses whatever Ammon said is completely and utterly disgusting. Please don't repeat it and try to forget it."

"He only said that when two people get married Tawaret gives them a baby as blessing. That's not disgusting"

"Oh right...I forgot all about that"

"You silly monkey" teased Ramses making Ahkmenrah grin.

But Ahkmenrah couldn't help but think what if he did love her?

But then he shook his head.

This love would be too scandalous.

Too dangerous.

---------------------------------

Nakhyte finally reached the palace out of breath and rather intimidated by his experience.

The guards let him through recognising his seal of office. He finally reached the gardens where no doubt his majesty would be at his hour.

He didn't look at Ahkmenrah when he spoke. He was blinded by fear.

He repeated what Sargon had said. He repeated it word for word.

Ahkmenrah's face turned white with horror. Kahmunrah who had been walking along the way back to his room stopped in his tracks as he listened to the message. His fingers opened involuntarily. There was a clatter. A fumble a crash. The yellowed scrolls he was holding fell to the floor.

--------------------------------------

Sargon reread the message in his mind. This new king was wise. Because really the message meant that Egypt will not do anything to aggregate his troops. Since Sargon hadn't attacked any of the cities this also meant he wouldn't aggregate anyone. No one wanted to deliver the first blow.

It was against the laws of honor.

But Sargon forgot about honor.

Honor meant nothing to him now.

So he called forward one of his officers.

Hurin. A slight but shrewd eyed man came in. He wore leather armor and had a sword at his waist. He saluted the General passionately.

"Hurin. I want you to capture three Egyptians. One man. One Child. And a woman. I want them dead at the Pharaoh's feet."

Hurin smiled viciously.

"Yes general"
