Chapter 4
Time: 3:21
Location: In the air ducts system
Champ and I parted ways; I went to the left and he went to the right. I began my escape; crawling through the air ducts. Now that I have gotten the hang of it (and that this path has more room), I am making my way through the vent with ease.
I let Champ have the map because his route was less direct than mine; he has tunnels that if he accidentally goes down them, he will reach a dead end. My route has none of that, but it did have a fifty foot climb down to the ground without a harmness and a chance of a certain death. I also have to make my way up a barbed wire fence guarded by two vicious watch dogs.
Champ and I split up the supplies according to what we each needed to escape in our route. Champ's path was harder in the ducts because of the dead ends and tight spaces so he needed the map and flashlight. My route was easier in the air ducts, but after I exit them, I will have a harder time getting to the base because of the climb down. Champ gave a the rope that I was tied in and some dog biscuits left over from when he used them. When we came here, his path was through the fence and the dogs. I still had the climb though. He had snuck around back and entered through a window.
I arrive at the place where I first entered the ducts. The passage way was open from when I took the metal off earlier so I just climbed out and stepped onto the tiny ledge. The wind had picked up since I was out here the last time and it was making it more difficult to stay balanced. I place the metal back on the opening and put the screws back in place. I tie one end of the rope to the metal part; weaving the rope between the slits in the metal. I tie the other end around my waist.
The rope is fairly long, but won't get me all the way down. I estimate that the rope will bring me down to a ledge half way down and then I can probably climb to the top of a smaller building attached to the one I'm on on and then get down from there.
I hold the coils of rope in my hand and gradually lower myself. My heart is pounding and I feel sweat trickling down from my forehead. I haven't been this nervous in a while. I knew I had to keep the rope taut or I might fall too quickly and miss the ledge. The rope will most likely go lower than the ledge so I don't want to pass it otherwise I might not be able to climb back up. My feet against the side of the building walking down as I lower myself further and further.
Finally I reach the ledge and pull myself to the wall. This ledge is slightly smaller than the one I had just been on and it is harder to stay on it without holding onto the rope. I unite the knot with one hand and try to hold onto the wall; my fingers pressed in the cracks in the concrete. I untie the knot and let go of the rope.
I start inching my way to the smaller building's roof. Only an inch of my foot is on the ledge because it is so small. I try to put my foot down, but it slips and for a second I think I'm going to fall. My balance shifts and both feet slip off the ledge; however, before I fall, I manage to grab a bit of the ledge with my hands (well more like my fingers.) I try to think back when I was a little kid and doing to monkey bars on the play ground. It's been long time since I have played on them, but I just pretend I'm six years old again and sway my body and then move my hands with it. Soon I am at the smaller building. I swing my legs up and my foot catches onto the roof and I hoist myself up.
I get to my feet and dash around the perimeter of the roof. I finally see a small metal latter on the side of the building and rush to it. Holding the latter, I climb down; the frigid metal freezing my hands and making me want to let go.
About half way down the latter, I hear alarms going off and sirens blaring.
"24601!" I hear from a speaker. The voice sounds furious and hungry for revenge. "You can't run! I will hunt you down!" Spotlights from watch towers are searching everywhere, but they never shine on me. I feel solid ground beneath my feet and make a dash for the fence. While I'm running, I reach for the biscuits and threw them at the dogs as I ran by. The dogs never even took notice of me and just chased after the food.
When I came to the fence I knew I couldn't climb it and I was thinking of what I could do. I left the rope on the building, I used the dog treats (not that those would help me get through the fence), but then I remembered my pocket knife. I whipped it out and started to cut the wire. Snap! One wire is cut. Snap! Snap! Snap! I cut three more wires gradually cutting a circle big enough for me to get through. Snap! Snap! I'm almost through the last few wires.
"24601 STOP THERE!"
