-flashback-
"Stop right there."
Me and Jaechan froze in one place as helicopters hovered above us with blinding lights shining down at us to find our exact location.
"We're done for," I thought, heart beating so fast I felt like I was about to pass out.
"KIDS," we heard someone scream in a whisper type of way, making us turn our heads to see that same man that helped us out before, the one that I thought Jaechan was related to.
"Old man!" We exclaimed, finally grasping a bit of hope. The helicopters were slowly landing, so we quickly ran to him to hide.
"Enough is enough Jaechan. I was fine when you were using Byeol to escape, but you're about to get her life taken away all because of your selfishness," the man glared.
"What's he talking about? Using me? To escape?" I paused and stared into his eyes that wouldn't look directly into mine, almost in shame. Just as we were distracted the soldiers had finally reached us. I was beaten up badly while Jaechan was dragged away by that man, looking extremely guilty. One swing to the head by a metal bat and I passed out.
Jaechan POV
I'm a horrible person and I deserve to pay for my sins. Even at that young age I had a wicked mind, and a wicked plan. There wasn't a person who hadn't heard about Byeol's parents escaping, I looked at her weak self back then and thought, bingo.
She's my ticket out.
Who would've thought that growing up she would get so strong, and so pretty. I've fallen for someone I used like an object, with someone I only played nice with to get on her good side. I know I know, how stupid of me, she didn't even know the way out, her parents did.
But something in her, pulled me towards her the day we first met. I had a sudden urge to talk to her, a feeling my young self had never felt before. I had planned to tell her about the whole stupid reason I had actually gotten to know her, but I didn't, how could I?
What if she called me selfish? What if she thought I was disgusting? What if she, left me?
I was an abandoned child, a mistake, was what they called me. You'd think I would be used to being left alone, and I was, until I met Byeol. She made me realise how nice it felt to have someone by my side.
Now she was being beaten up, and I couldn't do anything about it. I was being held in a factory filled with soldiers, when the president, a man who I will never consider my father, walked in. While everyone else bowed 90 degrees down, some even lower, I kept my head straight up. The man behind me pointed his gun at my head, making me lower my head in the presence of the 'mighty' leader.
More like a dog who couldn't stay loyal to one woman.
"Kim Jaechan, bow properly to your father, I get you're a bastard but have you no manners?" He furrowed his eyebrows. That's right, I even lied to her about my first name. I couldn't let her suspect me the slightest. She was a smart girl who would've figured it out one way or another.
Just then the door was opened to reveal an unconscious Byeol be dragged in harshly by her hair. "She tried to escape sir," the soldier informed.
"Why are you just standing still then? You know the drill, kill her," the leader spoke back coldly.
"NO, please, kill me instead, I have nothing to live for," I protested. Everyone sort of paused, in awe of my request, looking at me, then back at the leader who was in deep thought.
"Very well lover boy, but you shall wait until this girl regains consciousness, it wouldn't be fair for her to miss the show," he snickered, leaving the room while humming in joy. I ran to Byeol, blood covered her from head to toe, she was almost unrecognisable. Her eyes fluttered open at my touch, the soldiers immediately went to go bring back the leader to inform him.
"I'm sorry, I'm so sorry," I cried hugging her while she sat confused.
"Do you love him?" The leader questioned, walking back in with his hands in his pocket. She used the little bit of energy she held to nod her head slightly.
"How adorable, anyways, time to die," he spoke, snatching the gun off of the soldier and aimed it towards me. I closed my eyes prepared to die.
*bang*
I felt like I was dying, but nothing was felt. No pain. I opened my eyes to see Byeol in front of me grabbing her heart in pain.
"What a fucking idiot, I wouldn't actually shoot my son c'mon, bastard or not, my sacred blood runs through your veins child, I wouldn't actually kill you. I just happen to be damn near psychic, I know what love makes people do, that horrible horrible feeling," he spoke in satisfaction of his actions. I grabbed Byeol's face which was slowly losing life.
"Son?" She managed to utter before passing out, the last emotion her eyes screamed was betrayal.
"If you get in my way I swear to god I'll scream and tell everyone who I am," I warned, running to take her to the best hospital we had, they treated her with no hope that she would actually survive but as strong as she is, she did.
Once she was in stable condition she was thrown into a prison to rot, while all her other friends were being hung for merely knowing her. This was the leader's way of sparing her life.
a couple days later.
I visited her cell to see her glare up into my eyes. The loving eyes she would stare at me with were now shooting daggers into my soul. Nothing but betrayal seen in her rather empty orbs. I placed down her meal but she smacked it away as soon as.
"I'm gonna kill you," she glared, tears of disappointment daring to drop out of her eyes.
"I hope you do," I smiled, giving her my meal instead. She forced herself to eat while I watched her pathetically, when did everything go so wrong?
Byeol POV - a few weeks later.
I wasn't wasting my time in the prison cell, I used the time to get stronger, to memorise what times the soldiers came to check on me. Everything was perfectly planned.
Tonight was the night of the storm, I had over heard the soldiers talking about how this storm was so strong that the generators that connected to the border would probably break due to the heavy winds. This would be my chance to escape once and for all, the day went like it did everyday for the past couple of weeks.
7:15pm
The soldiers came to give me dinner.
8:30pm
The soldiers came to make sure I was asleep.
9:00pm
Old man comes to visit secretly.
"How are you doing?" He asked me in worry, knowing I wasn't doing great but feeling the need to ask.
"I'm fine, it's not the first time I've lived in a shit hole you know," I tried to reassure him. He had a key to the cell door, he opened it to talk to me directly, and locked it on his way out since he didn't want to get in trouble.
My plan was to steal those keys off of him. When he was about to leave, I reached for the keys discreetly before he opened the door wide for me.
"What are you," I muttered in utter confusion.
"C'mon Byeol, I think it's time for you to leave this hell," he spoke. He handed me his most treasured sword and a gun, something I hadn't actually used before.
"Even if you die tonight, remember you'll be dying a fighter," he patted my shoulder. He was about to walk away but I stopped him. "I don't like calling you old man, could I possibly know your name?" I raised my eyebrows.
"Call me uncle Jeon," he smiled. I nodded and reached out my hand to shake hands with him.
"You know Byeol, I had my own little boy your age. If you ever make it to the south and meet him. Tell him I'm sorry, he's never met me but him and his mum probably keep a lot of hate for me," he sighed.
"You've been to the south?" I raised an eyebrow in surprise. "For a mission yes, and ended up loving an already married woman. She ended up finding out she was pregnant on the day I had to return, quite the tragic love story," he looked down.
"It's something you couldn't have prevented, don't beat yourself up because of it. I promise I'll make it to the south and find your son to tell him what a great man you are," I said confidently. "I really hope you do," he smiled.
I ripped a piece of cloth from my shirt to tie up my hair. "Enough of the sweet talk uncle, I have places to go, princes to kill," I smiled, before turning my expression into a cold one at the thought of Jaechan, I was gonna make sure to get rid of him before I left this place. I spun my sword, ready to kill anyone who came in my way.
From soldiers to maids, my sword was smeared with their blood. I finally made it to the bedroom of 'Prince Jaechan.' Entering with a smile, bloods stained lips. He looked at me, face full of unreadable emotions. I held my sword to his neck, so close to taking the life out of him. "I knew we weren't meant to be, so I guess it's selfish that I didn't let that stop me from loving you," his eyes flooded with regret. "Shut your mouth," I gritted my teeth at his emotional words.
I took a step back, grabbing another sword and throwing it to him.
"I wouldn't be satisfied if I killed you so quickly, how about we fight? Survival of the skilled," I spoke breathlessly, pretty tired because of how many people I had fought before him.
"As you wish, I won't go easy on you Yeol," he smiled, swinging his sword. I blocked it with mine, kicking his stomach to make him fall.
"Don't ever call me that again, you've lost your right to," I spat, charging my sword forward in his direction, he spun and blocked my hit with his sword. The sound of our weapons clashing together echoed throughout the building of dead.
"Would you kill me, my love?"
"Are you so much of a fool to doubt it? My feelings for you have disappeared, after all you never truly fucking considered me a friend. What Chan? Wasn't it your plan to fuck me over once you were done with me?" I turned my sword in anger before charging at him in anger.
"YOU WERE ALL I HAD," I let out an excruciating scream, the emotions I tried to contain finally spilling. "Now I have nothing, nothing to lose," I glared, wiping the single tear that slid down my cheek from my swollen eyes. He dodged my sword, letting out a sad chuckle, "you've gotten a lot better at doing that," he said.
"Remember when I taught you it, it took you days to master it," he smiled, "shut your mouth," I gritted my teeth at his attempt to get me emotional, swinging for him again.
"Or the time that we hid up in a tree for days without food or water just to get away from labour, that was when you learnt of your perfect aim. You were the one who killed soldiers streets away with just a bow and arrow. I thought you were so cool," he spoke breathlessly. "Shut up," I blinked away the tears he built in my eyes.
"You always thought I was your better in combat because you knew I'd purposely lose every fight, but now look at you, my star has grown up," he took a step back to admire me.
"I SAID SHUT UP, this emotional blackmail won't change the fact that I fucking regret taking that bullet for you," I forced myself to utter.
"Kill me then," he said, dropping his sword. I stood still with trembling hands unable to do such, I talked big but it was all lies. How could I kill him? He was my only source of happiness, killing him would kill me.
"What's the matter darling? Can't do it?" He tilted his head, watching my frozen state. "You know, I always wished to escape," he suddenly spoke, running his finger down my sword.
"And if the only way for me to do that is in death by the hands of my beloved," he yanked my sword, driving it through his body as he pulled me into his embrace.
"So be it."
