I pulled into the parking lot of Brigham’s at 7:28 and studied it, looking for Danny. I noticed a big mass of black cars parked in the back corner and decided to try that. I drove over and parked in a sport that as a couple down from the closest car. Then, I took a deep breath and ducked out from the driver’s seat.
“Are you Griffin?” a man asked as I made my over to the cars.
“Yeah,” I said, now confident that I was in the right place.
“I’m Brigg,” the man said, sticking out his hand. I shook it nervously and then let my own hand fall limply to my side.
Brigg was big, like huge. He had black hair buzzed close to his head, and both biceps were covered in a variety of tattoos. The man was built like a tank, and even when he shot me a genuine smile, I was intimidated.
Brigg led me to a car and knocked on the window twice. After a moment, it rolled down to reveal Danny. “Griffin,” he greeted once, “I’m glad you made it.”
“Thanks,” I replied, a bit unsure of myself. Danny climbed out of his car and looked to the two other cars. The doors opened and a couple of men clambered out, most of them the size of Brigg.
“You said you found Sawyer?” I asked, shifting my weight from one foot to the other.
“Yes,” Danny said, “My mole tells me that Marcus is currently borrowing a warehouse from one of his associates on the outskirts of town. He also confirms seeing Sawyer on the day you called me, so we know she’s there.”
A though crossed my mind suddenly, and I frowned. “Does Sawyer’s grandma know what’s going on?” I asked, realizing that the poor woman was probably freaking out because her granddaughter hadn’t come home from the party.
“She does,” Danny stated, wincing. “I went and talked to her. It took a lot of convincing, but she finally agreed not to call the police for the next forty eight hours.”
I would’ve smiled at the mental image of Sawyer’s grandma and Danny had the situation surrounding their meeting not been so serious.
“What’s the plan?” Brigg asked from next to me.
“We’re going to drive to the warehouse and try to sneak in,” Danny said. “However, at some point, all hell is going to break loose, like it does. When that happens, Brigg, you and your guys will try to occupy the attention of as many guards as you can. While you’re keeping them busy, Griffin and I will go find Sawyer and get her out.”
“How do I distract ‘em?” Brigg questioned, and Danny rolled his eyes.
“However you want. These men took our Sawyer, so I don’t give a shit about what happens to them.”
Brigg cracked his knuckles and nodded. I noticed that as Danny had said “our Sawyer,” most of the men’s expressions darkened. I realized that Sawyer knew all of these men, and they all cared deeply about her safety.
“Shall we go?” one of the unnamed men said, and Danny nodded. I started back to my car, but a hand on my shoulder stopped me. I turned to find Danny was the one holding me.
“You ride with me, kid,” he stated firmly. I nodded and followed him to his car. I slipped into the passenger seat and Danny turned on the car. As we followed Brigg’s car, Danny pulled something out of his backseat and thrust it into my lap.
I stared at the small black bag, confused. I glanced at Danny, who gestured for me to open it. I unzipped the zipper and reached my hand in. As my fingers came in contact with something cold and metal, I realized what it was. I pulled out a gun, confirming my suspicions.
“You might need it,” Danny stated, “I don’t want you to be unarmed, and you said you’ve been to a shooting range.”
I didn’t reply, but rather held the weapon up in my hand. It has just a small handgun, but still lethal. Suddenly, I got a sick feeling in the pit of my stomach, and I shoved the gun back into the case.
I’m only seventeen. There was no way I could shoot someone! That wasn’t me, and that wasn’t anybody I wanted to be. However, at the same time, these men had taken someone that I loved, and I would do almost anything to get her back.
That said, did I have it in me to take a life?
Danny noticed my internal conflict and cleared his throat loudly to gain my attention. “What’s wrong, kid?” he asked.
“I don’t know if I can do this,” I admitted. “You were right when you said I don’t come from this world. I mean, I’ve only shot a gun at a piece of paper. I’m not some sociopathic murderer!” I cried, and then realized that I’d practically called Danny a killer. “Sorry,” I mumbled, running a shaking hand through my hair.
“No, it’s fine,” Danny replied calmly, “I understand, and in no way and I actually expecting you to shoot someone. I just gave you the gun for self-defense. If, just shoot someone in the leg. That’ll stop them.”
He gave me a reassuring glance, and I nodded. I felt like some of the weight had been lifted off of my shoulders. However, I still had to go into a warehouse full of ruthless men and try to locate my girlfriend.
This all felt so much bigger than I’d thought, like it wasn’t a reality. Never in a million years would I have expected to be put in this situation. That said, Sawyer was worth it to me, and I was going to get her back.

I’d been gliding in and out of consciousness for who knows how long. The pain in my side and wrist were excruciating, but I’d somehow gotten slightly more used to the pain. My back was stiff from sitting in the chair, but every time I’d tried to shift into more comfortable position, I’d pulled on my broken bones and almost passed out from the pain.
I was still wearing the clothes from the night of the party, only there were multiple rips in the shirt and skirt, and my shoes were gone. My hair was matted in some place and sticking up in others, and I could feel the bruises forming from when I’d been grabbed around the neck.
I know I’d been here at least a day, but that was it. Marcus hadn’t come in since my escape attempt, so I’ve been all alone. But hey, I wasn’t complaining. I really didn’t want any more broken bones.
Just as my eyelids started to slip, and my mind grew dark, I heard the heavy metal door bang open. I jumped in surprise and squinted at the man. He had a cigarette sticking in the corner of his mouth and a Dixie cup in his hand, and I frowned.
He walked across the room until he was a couple feet in front of me. Then he tipped the Dixie cup towards me so that I could see the three red pills. “Some painkillers,” the man said after a long drag on his cigarette. “Marcus decided to numb your pain.”
“Really?” I blurted, completely surprised at Marcus’s kindness.
“Yeah,” the man replied, but instead of helping me swallow the pills, he threw them over his shoulder. I watched in disbelief as the pills bounced on the dirty floor, and suddenly, I felt like I was going to cry. I’d just watched some small piece of hope thrown away, literally.
“Why did you do that?” I whispered under my breath.
“Because,” the man replied with a laugh, and I realized he’d heard me. “You don’t deserve them. Your father was a snake, and just because Marcus decided to be merciful doesn’t mean I need to. You’re going to suffer, so that your father suffers.”
I didn’t respond, but I could feel my heartbeat start to speed up. This man looked pissed off, and I was the only one in the room other than him. So, I knew that the pills weren’t the worst of what was to come.
The man took another drag off of his cigarette, and then he bent down so that he was eye level with me. Wordlessly, he raised the cigarette between us, and my eyes fixated on the burning end. Then, without warning, he slammed the cigarette into my shin.
I screeched in agony as I felt the burning end of the cigarette sear into my flesh. I tried to move my leg, but I shifted to forcefully, and I ended up pushing the chair back. I slammed into my broken wrist and screamed again.
As tears streamed down my face, I twisted my body as much as I could, and I managed to turn the chair on its side so that the pressure wasn’t on my wrist anymore. I heard the man laughing, and I looked up at him to see his mouth twisted in a malicious smile.
“Suffering yet?” he asked gleefully. I didn’t answer, and the man grunted. “Guess not,” he stated, and I winced with every step he took towards me. I would be stupid not to realize that this man was dangerous and wanted to hurt me.
He stood in front of me, and I had no idea what was coming next. However, as he swung back his leg, I knew, and I had no way to stop it.
His foot connected with my gut, and I cried out. My head snapped back, and I choked up a couple drops of blood. The man kicked me again, and I groaned, more blood dripping out of my mouth.
The man prepared to kick me again, but then stopped as I heard the sound of the door opening again. “Mick!” a new voice cried, “What are you― What the hell did you do to her?”
“Teaching her father a lesson,” the man, Mick, replied gruffly. “Now, if you don’t mind…” His voice trailed off as his foot connected with my gut for the third time. I coughed and groaned, and my eyes started to droop as black dots danced across my vision.
I prepared for another kick, but it didn’t come. I forced my eyes open to find the other man holding Mick back. “Marcus needs all hands downstairs. There’s been a breach. She has guards, but we need to go now.” Mick started to protest, so the man added, “I don’t think Marcus will be too happy when he finds out what you did to the girl.”
This got Mick’s attention, and he swore under his breath as he hurried out of the room. Then, I felt someone grab the sides of my chair and pull it up into the original position. I watched the man was he ripped part of my sleeve off and dabbed at the blood dribbling down my chin.
“Thank you,” I whispered hoarsely.
The man froze, and he swallowed hard before looking me in the eye. “I’m not your friend, but I’m not a fool.”
Then, he turned and rushed out the room. I spit out more blood and took a deep breath, and then tried to force the pain that radiated throughout my body to wane. As I did this, I thought back to what the man had told Mick. There’d been a breach, and Marcus needed all men. Then, it hit me.
Griffin had found the phone, and help was here
