Chapter 9
I watched Xavier and waited for him to elaborate on the whole "my brothers getting him expelled" bomb he just dropped.
"I was actually friends with them at some point. Well, I was friends with Aiden with him being my roommate and all. The others, not so much." He turned to look at me as he continued. " Max did steal my team and Elliot took my girlfriend. I put all that aside because of Aiden. I probably shouldn't have." He laughed bitterly.
"The day of the incident, we'd just won a match and since we were allowed to leave the school on weekends I decided to drag Aiden to a party at one of the guys that lived close to the school. He was with Max when I found him so he asked Max to join and since at that time I was trying to make an effort to be friends with his brothers I offered him a ride too. Elliot was already at the party when we arrived. He offered me juice and I took it. After some time I didn't feel very well and decided to head back to school. I couldn't find Aiden so I left without him. I got pulled over by the police on my way. They said they got a tip that I was in possession of illegal drugs."
My eyes widened at the drugs part. There's no way he does drugs. I didn't know him then but I find that really hard to believe.
"Of course I denied it but they said they still had to search. I didn't resist cause I knew I didn't have any so imagine my shock when they found some under the front seat. They said they had to take me in for a drug test. No matter what I said they didn't believe me. I called Aiden and told him what happened on the way to the station. Surprisingly, I failed the drug test. The only way I would have drugs in my system is if it was in the juice Elliot gave me."
He paused as if waiting for me to jump in and defend my brother. I was going to but I stopped and decided to wait till he was done with his story.
"I told them the whole Elliot theory and named Aiden as my witness since I was with him when Elliot gave me the juice. Also, the only people that had been in my car that day was Aiden and Max. I didn't really expect Aiden to take my side against his brothers but I knew at least he would not lie. When he was called in he backed me up on the juice but he stressed that he couldn't guarantee that I didn't take anything else after the juice. Max was also called in and the next thing I knew I was being charged with drug use and possession. The school authority was called in. My dad wasn't very far behind. As always he did what he does best, throw money at situations to fix it. He didn't even believe me when I said I really wasn't doing drugs. I got expelled after that, my dad made sure it wouldn't go on my record and then he checked me into rehab." He concluded.
I knew what he was implying. That someway somehow my brothers got drugs in his car, drugged him, and then got him arrested.
" I know this isn't what you want to hear but have you considered that someone else might have framed you and made it look like my brothers did it?" He looked at me like I was crazy.
"Of course not. The only people that had the motive and means to do that were your brothers. They hated me enough and the one I trusted betrayed me."
" My brothers might be messed up at times but they wouldn't go that far. This is a really serious accusation, Zave. Did you at least ask them about it?" I couldn't help but be defensive. He already had his conclusion when it comes to my brothers so I had no way to convince him otherwise. I knew my brothers and I knew this wasn't something they would do. No matter how much they hated the person.
"Elliot obviously denied it. He said he got the juice from the servers at the party and he was even bringing it to Aiden but since he turned it down he gave it to me. Max straight out ignored me and Aiden just apologized for what happened to me but he wasn't sorry for keeping his brother out of trouble."
That sounds like Aiden. There has to be a part of the story that maybe neither Xavier nor my brothers know about.
"I didn't expect you to believe me. You asked me and I answered. Let's just drop it."
I didn't want to drop it but there was nothing I could do about that so I just nodded. For now, at least till I get home and get to the bottom of this. We went back to staring at the view.
"So did you approach me with a sick idea of revenge," I asked quietly and waited anxiously for his reply. I really did't know how I'd react if that was true.
"No," he answered staring intently into my eyes. " I was shocked and a bit angry when I found out but I wasn't going let them take away anything I liked ever again."
"So you being friends with me now is because of your resolve."
" Of course not. Us being friends is more important than any grudge I have against your brothers. You mean so much to me, Evie, don't ever doubt that." He reached toward me and tucked away a stray hair that had fallen from my ponytail, then pulled me into a hug. A tear escaped my eye because of the relief I felt. It hit me then how important Xavier is to me too. I hugged him back. I really wish he and my brothers will make up soon.
"Wanna get out of here?" He pulled away to get a reply. I nodded. He held my hand and led me to the elevators. He pressed the button for the first floor.
"So your dad is running for major huh?" He groaned.
"Don't remind me. He's still trying to get my grandpa's approval after all these years of marrying my mother."
" Why's that?"
"My grandpa is really a traditional person. He's into the whole, a male son must take over from him, so no matter how hard my mum worked and all her qualifications he still decided to favour my dad, his best friend's son, over his own daughter. But everyone knows it's my mum doing the work behind the scenes. My dad is probably hoping to use this position to prove to the old man that he is worthy. It's really bad whenever we visit my granddad's ranch. He just fawns over the man. It's embarrassing." He shuddered. The elevators dinged and opened.
We headed towards the auditorium. The door opened before we reached it and Xavier's father stepped out, his disapproval of his son evident on his face. The door opened wider and surprisingly I came face to face with Mark.
