Chapter Twenty-One
The case gets underway as soon as the judge, a stern looking beta with oval glasses, sits down. He looks between me and Aaron before looking down at the papers spread out in front of him.
"Let's hear opening statements." He looks up again, eyes settling on Aaron's attorney.
The burly alpha who is representing Aaron stands up, coming to walk in front of the tables. Every part of him makes me want to recoil, the size of his broad body and the sneer he shoots my way.
"Thank you, your honor." His voice is deep, ringing loudly through the courtroom. "My client, Aaron Harris, is a respectable alpha. One who stood by his Omega, despite Mr. Katz insistence on going to school and starting his own business. He even went through a year of fertility treatments with Mr. Katz in their efforts to conceive a baby. As far as I can tell, Mr. Harris has paid his due, done much more than any other alpha should, and he should be allowed to gracefully divorce his husband."
"Respectable my ass," I hear Nico mumble behind me.
His words bring a small smile to my face. Aaron is the epitome of an asshole alpha, and it seems like his attorney is trying to play up traditional values, making Aaron seem like a wonderful husband, instead of a less-than commendable one.
The attorney sits back down, hands resting on the table as he looks over at Herri. "Your honor, my client, Milo Katz, has pushed past the stereotypes and restrictions set on omegas by society. He went to college to earn a double major in business and accounting, started his own businesses that were easily embraced by the community. He has endured much to get where he is today, and to have it all ripped away due to his former alpha claiming his right to mate?"
She shakes her head. "Milo, stand up please." With shaky arms, I push myself up from the chair I am sitting in. Herri turns back to the judge. "As you can see, your honor, Mr. Harris is trying to take everything from my client, without a legal standing to do so. Mr. Katz is clearly able to have children. In fact, he is pregnant with twin right now, by an omega no less."
The words sting a bit, but Herri had warned us that the words exchanged would be harsh. They would have to appeal to societal views, instead of moral ones. And an alpha not able to get someone pregnant while an omega can, is seen as a harsh blow.
Gasps come from the other side of the room, rather dramatically. My eyes flick up for only a second, but it is enough time to see Aaron staring at me with a tense jaw and clenched hands. His pregnant girlfriend is watching me with wide eyes, hands clasped to her stomach. In all honesty, I am surprised my parents hadn't told them yet, especially since they seem to be on Aaron's side.
"Your honor," Aaron's attorney stands up. "How do we know that the children inside Mr. Katz are not Mr. Harris'? Since he is clearly able to have children, then he was probably pregnant when they split up and this is his way at getting back at Mr. Harris; probably trying to get as much money as he can from an alpha who he clearly can't let go."
My mouth drops open at his words. His whole speech has done a three-sixty. But he is still blaming me. And the thought of using children in the way he suggests I am doing has my stomach turning. That sounds like something Aaron would do, not me.
"Oh spare me," Herri says to Aaron's attorney, making the still silent judge raise his eyebrows slightly. But he doesn't reprimand her, so she continues "Your client never wanted to have children with Mr. Katz."
She walks out from behind the table, handing a manila folder over to the judge. He takes it and scans over it, eyebrows rising even more before he looks up again.
"I don't see how this proves that Mr. Harris did not want to have children with Mr. Katz."
Herri nods. "Your honor, those medical records show that Mr. Katz had Minuere, a dangerous heat suppressant is his system. On its own, this drug can have such severe side effects that it can cause strokes and even death. That is why it is carefully regulated now. The only way Mr. Katz would have been able to get that drug was if it was prescribed to him. But, he has no records of it in his medical file." She turns to look at Aaron. "Conveniently, Mr. Harris is a doctor. He has easy access to this drug. It would not be too hard for him at all to replace Mr. Katz daily vitamin with a dangerous suppressant. Therefore, preventing Mr. Katz from getting pregnant, and allowing him to easily leave his husband and be with his pregnant lover," she gestures to Aaron's girlfriend, whose eyes are wide, "and take everything with him."
The judge looks thoughtful, sitting back in his seat.
Aaron's attorney stands up, giving a small shake of his head. "Wow, Herri, I knew you were extreme, but going so far as to make up elaborate stories about my client? That's a new low." Herri just raises an eyebrow at him, clearly not taking the bait. He just shakes his head again. "And how do we know that Milo didn't get these drugs himself. It isn't too hard to find a drug dealer these days who could have sold him the suppressants."
"And why exactly would he do that?"
"So he could leave to be with his lover." He gestures at Ollie. "But he clearly stopped taking the suppressants to soon and is now pregnant with my client's children. This is all just a ploy to get money out of my client, knowing that it is an alpha's duty to care for an omega pregnant with his children."
"Your honor," Herri starts again, but she is cut off by the judge holding up his hand.
"I have heard enough." He readjusts the glasses on his face. "Before I make any final decisions, I will be requiring a further investigation. I want some evidence that the twins Mr. Katz is carrying are Aaron's, or that claim will be dismissed. As well as the claim that Mr. Harris has been slipping Mr. Katz suppressants without his knowledge, or else that claim will be dismissed. I will give both of you a month.
"Excuse me, your honor?" my voice trembles as I push myself up from the chair. The judge looks over at me, clearly waiting for me to continue. "The only way to get DNA evidence to prove parentage is through amniocentesis. Since my pregnancy is considered high risk, my doctor will not let me perform this procedure."
"What are you suggesting, Mr. Katz?" the judge says, voice curious.
"We wait until the babies are born, and perform a DNA test then. There are no risks involved."
"I am not waiting months for you to give birth so that I can know if those children are mine," Aaron says, rising from his chair. "You're just trying to keep me separate from the pregnancy."
"Mr. Harris, please sit down," the judge says, before turning back towards me.
"Seeing as I can not force you to undergo a procedure that has risk involved, I will grant you this motion. When are you due, Mr. Katz?"
"I will be induced June 21st."
He nods his head. "I will give you one month after the birth to recover. I want to see you all in here July 21st, all evidence included."
"What about the birth certificate your honor," Aaron's attorney says. "My client will not be allowing an omega to claim parentage over his children."
The judge looks over at me. "The birth certificate will be kept blank until we can confirm parentage."
Reluctantly, I nod my head.
"Anything else I need to know?" the judge asks. No one says anything. "Alright then."
We are all released, but the tension I was hoping would disappear is still holding strong. Herri walks over to me. "You did very well, Milo. Now, we just have to work to find that evidence."
"Here," I say, reaching into my bag and pulling out a small card. "This is my doctor's contact information. I am sure she will be able to find whatever evidence you need."
She nods, taking the card from me before walking out of the courthouse, heels clacking behind her.
"At least it is over for now," Nico says.
My legs are trembling as I walk over to where they are sitting. Nico is the first one to grab me in a tight hug, hand rubbing along my back in comfort.
"Now, you just have to focus on you and those two babies." He pulls back from me, a small smile on his face, but it falls away when he looks over my shoulder, presumably over at our parents. "I'll make sure Oma and Ama don't bother you. I'm not making the same mistake again."
"Thanks, Nico," I whisper.
He looks down at me again, the smile returning. "It's my job to protect you, always be on your side." He gives me one more tight hug. "Love you. And Maya and Adalia do too."
"Love you too."
Nico steps away from me then, going to intercept our parents who are trying to make their way over to me.
"Let's get out of here, love. Maybe get some lunch?" Ollie grabs my hand, twining his fingers with mine.
Yeah," I say, watching as Aaron storms out of the room, his girlfriend running after him. Nico is busy arguing with our parents, refusing to let them come over and talk to me. Oma looks pissed, try to shake Nico's hand off of her, while Ama just looks thoughtful. "Let's get out of here."
