Chapter Twenty-Four
My phone rings as I wait for the last two parents to come pick up their children. This isn't surprisng, since these children's parents run late everyday, making me stay later than I would like.
After making sure that Mamoru and Erin are still busy coloring at the craft table, I pick up the phone. Caller ID tells me that it is Milo's shop phone that is calling me. Weird, seeing as Milo always just calls me using his phone.
He probably just misplaced his phone. He has been doing that a lot lately, forgetting the little things, and then getting upset in his attempt to find them.
With a small smile on my face, I press the green button, putting the phone up to my ear. "Lose your phone again, love?"
The line is silent for a moment before a distinctly female voice comes over the phone. "Hi Mr, Bellamy. This is Xania."
Immediately, worry settles in my gut. The last time Xania had called me, I had to take Milo to the hospital. "What's wrong?"
She doesn't hesitate to continue, the worry in her voice coming over the phone. "Mr. Katz started having contractions."
"Oh shit," I whisper, eyes darting over to my students. They didn't seem to hear me though, still talking to each other as they scribble on the pieces of paper I had given them. "I'll be there as soon as I can."
"He's already on his way to the hospital."
"He's driving himself?" My worry only grows, imaging Milo alone as he tries to get himself to the hospital. He loves those babies just as much as I do, probably more since he is carrying him.
"No, no," Xania assures. "Janette is taking."
"Janette?" I question, mind scrambling as I try to find a face for her name.
"Yeah. She was in here earlier, came to talk to Mr. Katz. They weren't speaking for long before she was saying that he needed to go to the hospital. I called you right away."
My breath comes out shaky, eyes closing. "Okay, okay. Thank you for calling me, Xania."
"Of course." She pauses for a second. "I hope he's alright. Mr. Katz doesn't deserve anything else bad happening to him."
"No, he doesn't." The doorknob turning has me opening my eyes. Mamoru and Erin's parents are finally here, looking mighty suspicious with their flushed cheeks and swollen lips. "I've gotta go, Xania."
"Keep me updated," she says before hanging up.
The parents apologize as they sign their children out, but I just raise an eyebrow in response, not having the patience to say anything else. It takes me ten minutes to get out of there, making sure everything is in order and my bag is packed. So, by the time I make it to the car, I am on the edge of my seat, hands gripping on to the steering wheel so tightly that my fingers are turning white.
The thought of Milo and our babies being in danger has me sick to the stomach. They are way too earlier, just hitting the sixth-month mark. Our doctor had reassured us that they are far enough along that they would have a chance if born, but I don't want them to just be given a chance. I want them to come out healthy, not fighting for their lives.
By the time I make it to the hospital, a headache is just starting to come on from how tightly I am clenching my jaw. The nurse at the front desk tells me that Milo has already been admitted, giving me his hospital room number.
The elevator seems to take forever but is most likely just a minute. Everything is moving too slow for my liking, my heart on edge as I practically run to Milo's room, opening the door.
A doctor is already in there with him, the lighting in the room low as an ultrasound is performed. Milo startles when the door opens, but the tension leaves his body once he realizes it's me.
"Ollie," he says, reaching a hand out to me. "I didn't know if you had gotten Xania's message."
"I came as quickly as I could," I say, dropping my stuff into a chair before rushing to his side. "What is going on? Are you and the babies alright?"
"I don't know," Milo says, leaning his head against my shoulder. "My back has been hurting all day. I thought it was normal, but then they starting to become more regular. I-I guess they were contractions."
"You would be right, Mr. Katz," the doctor says, setting down the ultrasound wand. "The babies most likely were in distress, but they both look healthy on the monitor. As for the contractions, I am going to give you a dose of tocolytics to see if we can stop the contractions. We are going to keep you in here for a few days, monitor you to make sure labor has successfully been stalled. If they don't stop by tomorrow morning, we are going to have to discuss other treatments."
"What are the chances of the drug working?" I ask, squeezing Milo's hand as he sniffles into my shoulder.
The doctor- whose badge tells me that they are names Morrison- pushes a button on the side of the bed. "Seeing as the contractions are not too strong and pretty far apart, there is a pretty good chance that we can successfully stop the labor from progressing." A nurse comes into the room, pushing a cart in front of her. "I just want you to rest, let the medicine work. If you need anything, or you feel like the contractions are getting stronger, then push that button on the side of your bed right away."
"Thank you," I say, and Dr. Morrison walks out of the room.
"I should probably get out of here," a voice says from the corner of the room, starling me. Turning, I see that Aaron's mistress is watching us, hands on her very swollen stomach. "You two should have some time alone."
Milo pulls himself away from me long enough to look over at her, a small smile on his face. "Thanks, Janette, for bringing me. If you wouldn't have brought me in, I most likely would have continued to think the contractions were just backaches."
She stands up with some difficulty, her swollen stomach making it difficult to stand. Once up, she waddles over to Milo, giving his arm a small squeeze. "Of course. I hope your babies are alright." With that, she walks out of the room, leaving me and Milo alone with the nurse.
"Alright, Milo," she says, walking over to the bed, let's get you comfortable." She lays warm blankets on top of him and angles the bed so that it is most comfortable. "Now, I am going to get you hooked up with an IV, which will allow me to administer the medication that Dr. Morrison has prescribed for you."
Milo winces as she puts the needle in his arm, placed tape over it to keep it from moving. Once everything has been put in place and the medication has been administered, she is tucking the blankets around him. "Let us know if you need anything. We want you to be as relaxed as possible to help stop those contractions, so try to get some sleep."
"I will, thank you," Milo says, and the nurse gives him a small smile before walking out of the room.
Once she is gone, Milo is scooting over, patting the empty space next to him. "Lay with me?"
"Of course, love," I say, slipping off my shoes before climbing under the covers with him.
He quickly cuddles to my chest, trying to get as close to me as possible with his bump. "God, Ollie, I'm so scared."
"Me too, love," I whisper, dropping a kiss on the top of his head. "But, we'll work everything out."
"I just want them to be safe." He sniffles, curling impossibly closer to me. "Not coming too soon cause I am too stressed out."
"Well, we need to do something to help you relax," I tell him, readjusting the blankets as they try to slip off the bed. "Maybe you can reduce your time at the coffee shop and bookstore, maybe even go to those yoga classes you were telling me about?" He nods. "Anything you think will help, we can try."
"If this works, they're most likely going to put me on bed rest until I get further along. So, cutting back on my hours is unavoidable. And I'll have to talk to Maya about that yoga class. She loved the one she went to when she was pregnant with Adalia."
He pauses, leaning back his head enough so that he can meet my eyes. "I just worry about Aaron."
"What about him?"
His brows scrunch in worry. "He looks so angry at the courthouse. And, now that Janette has given us the evidence that will incriminate him, I'm afraid of what he might do. He has never been good at reigning in his temper once he gets going?"
"What papers are you talking about? And isn't Janette," my mind flashes back to the omega who had been sitting in here with Milo as he waited for me to get here, "Aaron's mistress? Why would she be giving us paperwork that incriminated her alpha?"
"Apparently she didn't know the whole story, and now that she does, she has decided to help us, as well as leave him."
"Wow," I say, relaxing back into the mattress. "We lucked out on that one."
Milo nods his head. "The one thing that has gone our way."
"Let's hope it stays that way."
Milo yawns, humming his agreement. It isn't long before he is falling asleep, only being awoken briefly to eat dinner and then go to the bathroom before coming back to bed. After making a quick call to my Grandama to ask if she can watch Emmie for the night- and the twenty-minute reassurance that Milo is resting, and no Grandama, you don't have to come fret over him- I curl around him in bed.
Morning comes soon enough, the morning dim as it is pouring down rain outside the windows. Dr. Morrison comes in early in the morning to check on Milo before leaving for the day. We got lucky, the contractions having seized completely without further treatment. But, Dr. Morrison said that Milo would need to go in to see Dr. Romero as soon as possible, so that she can make sure that everything is still alright in a few days.
It takes a bit of hassling, but we are able to get out of the hospital before eight in the morning, making it so that I can get Milo home before I have to get to work.
"Are you sure you'll be alright," I ask Milo, hand on the doorknob.
Milo just rolls his eyes, turning on the television that we had just recently moved into the bedroom. Emmie is sitting on the bed next to him, her eyes slitted as she purrs from his petting. "I'll be fine. Maya and Adalia will be over in just a little bit to keep me company. Now, get going before you're late for work."
Giving him one last look- and a quick kiss, because I still need to reassure myself that he is really okay- I force myself to leave the house.
Sure enough, Maya is just pulling into the driveway as I am climbing into the car. She gives me a wave as I pull out, my eyes fixated on the camera that Nico had paid to have installed all those months ago. It calms my heart a little to know that Milo won't be alone, and that the alarm will be protecting him, but I know that I won't be fully comfortable until I get home tonight and am able to hold him close again.
