Chapter 4

A/N: FunFact! I was going to make the present year 2020 but this book is already going to be depressing enough. Also, this chapter is longer than usual because there's a lot to unpack.

Janus awoke against a brick wall, taking a moment to look around. Patton lay before him, looking almost dead if it weren't for the rising and falling of his chest.

He looked out of the alley he and Patton were in, seeing people give disgusted looks and dressed up in old clothes. I mean, something a normal person in 2019 would wear was nothing compared to what Janus saw people wear.

"Pat..." Janus shuffled over to Patton, nudging him. "Pat, open your eyes..."

Patton groaned, looking at his friend, Janus' light patch of skin around his eye being the first thing he saw. "Jan-Jan..?"

"You're alright..." Janus breathed a sigh of relief. "What happened?"

Patton sat up, leaning against a wall. "I don't know... First we were in my house and now..."

He paused to look at his surroundings, confused. "Where are we..?"

Janus huffed, standing up and pulling Patton to his feet. "Good question."

Two young children ran up to the pair, looking shocked beyond relief.

"I thought dad was joking!"

The other one spoke up. "So did I!"

Both kids wore dark clothes, looking like the normal five or six year old aside from their obvious patch of lighter skin. Just like Janus.

Janus rose a brow. "Er- Who are-"

"I'm Uma!" One of them said, blowing bangs out of their face.

"And I'm Ethel!" The other one responded, fixing their misplaced ponytail.

"Hi kiddos!" Patton gave the two a smile. "Say, who is your dad? Do you know his name?"

The two kids exchanged glances, their eyes lighting up.

"It is them!"

"I can see that, Ethel."

Uma smiled, giddy. "His name is Logan!"

"He adopted us with our other da-..." Ethel's voice trailed off, looking like they've just seen a ghost. "I-I mean m-mom..."

Uma tensed a bit. "But mom stopped coming home a while ago..."

Janus narrowed his eyes, deciding to change the topic for the obviously uncomfortable kids.

Patton, however, had other plans. "Logan and Remus?"

"How'd you know?" Ethel asked, calming down from her sudden scare.

"Because they're the ones!" Uma facepalmed, annoyed.

"Whatever, dingus."

"Idiot."

"Jerk face!"

"We have the same-" Uma rolled her eyes, sighing. "Never mind.."

"Can you take us to your father..?" Patton questioned, hopeful that his Logie was okay.

"Sure!" Ethel took Patton's hand, Patton giggling in response.

"Pat- Wait!" Janus interrupted before taking Uma's hand. "What do you mean 'We're the ones'?"

Ethel let go of Patton's hand. "Dad told us that if we ever saw someone with the same skin thing as us, we have to tell him."

"Which dad told you?" Janus crosses his arms, not convinced in the slightest. He was probably just in a coma or something. None of this was real!

"Remus told us!" Uma smiled, grabbing Janus' hand. "Hey, Ethel..?"

"Yeah?"

Uma furrowed her brows, trying to remember. "Weren't we supposed to tell them something?"

Ethel lit up. "The year!"

Patton laughed nervously. "What do you mean? It's 2019..!"

Uma and Ethel looked at each other, breaking into laughter.

"What, no!" Ethel said between giggles. "It's 1987!"

"Boy, you two are creative." Uma hummed pulling Janus out onto the street.

Patton paled dramatically, not sensing a hint of sarcasm from Uma OR Ethel.

"But it's-"

Ethel shushed Janus. "Shh! We have to cross the road!"

They waited for cars to slow down on the road before going to run across, the sound of a car breaking suddenly made their heads turn.

"Get out of the way, Patch Face!" The driver snorted, steering around them.

Uma groaned, letting out a small sigh of relief and crossing the road with the others. She stopped in front of a small blue house, smiling again.

"Welcome to our humble abode!" Ethel squeaked, pushing the door open.

The house was beautiful to say the least. Considering Remus supposedly lived here. One long hallway seemed to connect all of the rooms on the first floor and then stairs by the door led to the second floor.

"Daaaaad! We found someone!"

A groan from the kitchen could be heard, followed by a sip of some beverage. "Is it actually Janus this time?"

Janus let go of Uma's hand, rushing to where he heard the voice along with Patton.

"L-Logan..?" Patton muttered, stopping in the doorway.

Logan looked up, eyes widening. "Holy shit it is you.."

"Logan you look... older.." Janus commented, confused as ever.

Logan laughed nervously, Patton running into his arms.

"Logie!"

Logan hugged Patton back, not knowing how to respond. "...Hello.."

Ethel ran down the hall, screaming while Uma chased her sibling with a shoe.

Logan sighed. "I've been here for 15 years, Janus.."

Janus shot a look at Logan. "What does that mean..?"

Patton wrapped his arms around Logan, not letting go.

"Remus and I..." Logan shivered, looking down. "We got here in 1972.. So..." Logan looked back up at Janus. "I'm 32 years old.."

"What?!" Patton let go of Logan, backing into a table. "You're what?!"

Logan shifted uncomfortably. "Yup... We were sent back in time.. That's the only explanation I can think of..."

Janus looked around, trying to process everything. "Where's Remus..?"

Logan sucked in a breath, putting his mug of coffee down. "He... Was here.."

"What do you mean 'was'?"

Fixing his glasses, Logan looked up. "Remus is dead.."
