1: A Tasteful Encounter

Bland.

That would be the perfect, singular adjective to describe me.

Of course, I'm also insanely organised -- capable, smart and reliable. As well as an expert of straight-black coffee; excel sheet formulas, and the number of dirt stains on my neighbour's bronze doorknob that probably hasn't been wiped since the very first Ice Age.

Seriously, it's still etched in the corner of my overworked brain.

"The usual..?" a voice interrupts my thoughts, and my vision refocuses on the hot barista's raised eyebrow. I smile.

"Yes. To go, please." I order, swiping my card swiftly on the scanner.

The cute barista chuckles slightly at my almost robotic, rehearsed movements. "You must really like black coffee." He comments, tearing the receipt off and placing it on my palm.

Well.....

It wasn't like I freaking love black coffee. It works: I need caffeine, and it comes as it is. I just never bothered to try anything else.

The hot barista boy though; stares at me exactly how you would look at a Black Coffee Fanclub president. Bland......incredibly bland...

The most tasteless, boring choice of beverage ever. Note taken.

But before I could relish in yet another stranger telling me how boring I seem; my colleague-- Yujin, storms towards me in blood-shot eyes and a silent, chaotic expression.

"Come.With.Me." She says in-between stiff breaths. "Now."

And almost in a frightening speed, Yujin grabs my black coffee and drags me all the way back to our workplace. In the middle, I could've sworn she was just about to burst into sporadic explosions.

Well... this isn't what I expected when I applied with Yujin to be an intern in this famous law firm, after graduating law school.

However, there wasn't even time left to think. Yujin smacks my back in quick consecutive taps, nudging me to look at where she's pointing. And--

Holy....mama...

A boy. He adorns a grey hoodie, with inked patterns decorating the skin of his skilled, slender hands. Dark, messy hair frames his godly sculpted face -- he's incredibly gorgeous, the type that pins you down with a deadly, attractive force whenever his devilish smile curves on his reddish lips.

The handsome stranger's sweet smile soon disappears as the person opposite of him conveys some news. His eyes turn down slightly, indicating that he's in deep thought.

"I get it," I turn to Yujin with a smile. "He's hot. But is that all you wanted to show me?"

"Of course NOT you dumbass!" Yujin whispered-screamed, and clenches her fists in frustration as she pulls me together behind a pillar. "You don't know who he is?!"

What? Obviously not.

That was what I wanted to blurt out, until a massive crowd of on-looking fans started to gather around the gorgeous figure; and he reluctantly stops his private conversation.

Yujin turns back to me in a defeated motion. "He's the Jeon Jungkook, a famous game streamer and singer. Jungkook's the hottest celebrity globally now. But..."

She pauses for a moment, staring into my confused eyes. "...But you probably have no idea who he is. Are you actually a young adult female or a 98 year old retired man...?"

Upon recieving her 'compliment', I shrug slightly in response and smile.

"Well, enough about me. If he's as famous as you say; then what is that celebrity doing here in our law firm?"

Silence takes over us as we turn back again to peek at Jungkook. He seems to hesitate as he recieves his fan greetings, adjusting the headphone set to cling around his neck. While exchanging fan banter, Jungkook's sharp eyes seem to catch the two of us hiding behind the pillar. It takes me a few seconds to realise that I have been locking eyes with him, as he stares curiously into my eyes.

"....Is he looking over here?" Yujin freezes in static paralysis. Her mouth seems to bob open and close like a goldfish as she makes sense of what's going on.

But Jungkook didn't hold his stare for too long. His gaze seems to travel down to my hands, which held the transparent cup of iced, black coffee. He tilts his head slightly, lips apart while reading the logo on the cup.

"Let's go. There's a cafe nearby." He suddenly remarks to what seems to be his manager, and walks off briskly to the exit as he waves the fans goodbye.

"...freakishly cool and stylish till the end...." Yujin drops a comment as her star speckled gaze follows Jungkook to the main exit -- her hands are held together tightly in vast admiration.

She then turns to look playfully back at me. "The total opposite of you."

In a retort, my arms crossed together defensively. "Really?" I say, lips turned up into a knowing smile.

"...Then I guess my law thesis paper is too boring for you to refer to. Isn't it due tomorrow?"

The moment I mentioned our thesis assignment, Yujin's face turns stone white. She chuckles awkwardly, pleading to take her comments back.

"Alright," I rolled my eyes eventually. "I put my thesis in the first drawer of my work desk. Go up early and finish it first."

Yujin cheers loudly in a series of claps. "I knew you were my friend!" She grins widely, resembling a child. As she skips to the elevator, she turns back to make a final remark.

"A friend that's just a little boring!"

Oh man.

At this point, my ears will start to fall off from the amount of times I hear that adjective being used for me.

You. Are. So. Boring. Tasteless. Bland like the coffee you drink.

Shrugging off the thought in a long winded sigh, I decided to head back to the cafe to buy another boring menu item: my favorite plain bagel.

Plain, lightly salted, baked bagel.

In the mood of a bland atmosphere, I decided to read an equally bland news article on my phone while I walked a few blocks towards the cafe. The scene before me however -- wasn't anything but bland.

"What....the...hell....?" I simply muttered to myself; absorbing the conflict happening in front of me.

Jungkook's expression hardens slightly as a manic customer yells profanities into his face. The others stood quietly, taking out their phones to record this scene that would probably break the internet.

"Look here, young boy!" The middle aged man points angrily at his white shirt, stained with what seemed to be coffee. "You shoved me, and now I've spilled the drink all over my clothes."

The manager seems to exchange mutual eye contact with Jungkook, before leaving quietly towards the back door. Jungkook himself, however, stays as he shoots a polite smile at the accuser.

"I apologise. Let me pay for the cleaning fees." He simply offers, but the other had different ideas.

"No." the man refuses, pushing his finger intimidatingly into Jungkook's chest. "You're a celebrity aren't you? I've seen you on the internet. Just pay a few hundred and I'll call this even."

What in the world....?

The atmosphere grew tense as the others begun to exchange whispers, discussing the situation in front of them. I stayed quiet, assessing the scene carefully. While observing, my eyes darted from the hesitating boy to the angry man, but something else catches my eye -- and immediately.....my feet naturally stepped forward.

"Excuse me." I say, approaching the two. Jungkook's intense gaze instantly lands on me as he stares deeply into my profile. Gosh....

I will never get used to his immensely attractive stare.

But this isn't the time to think about that -- I fiddled nervously around my pocket and pulled out my wallet.

"I'm an attorney." my voice shakes just slightly as I introduce my position, flashing my business card.

Of course, Its a lie -- I'm still a law student. However....I need this to work.

"I noticed something going on here -- Mister, can you prove for a fact with concrete evidence that he was the one who shoved you?" I state, and the man's expression changes.

"There are many customers walking back and forth on the cafe floor. However, even if Jungkook accidentally pushed you; it is illegal to demand money in return for a peaceful resolution."

The man stays quiet. After hesitating a bit, I push a little further. "In fact....its extortion."

As soon as I said that, the middle aged baffoon yells profanities at me in an aggressive manner. Jungkook steps up to cover me, but it was too late -- the customer dumps his cream cake onto my face and neck, veins popping in his anger-filled eyes.

I simply wipe away the cake on my face. The angry man calms down slightly however; once hearing a few clicks of the cameras around us.

Coward. My eyes gaze at him mockingly.

By my side, Jungkook also stares intently at me, his amused smile showing keen interest in my actions. I try to choke back a tear and resumed my acting.

"...If you don't have the ability to provide evidence, then explain this to me instead," I smirk confidently, pulling out a brand new clothes tag from behind his neck. Everyone gasps.

"....Well? Explain to us why you were in such a hurry to wear this new shirt, unless....you bought it to perform a fake show here."

With that, the once-angry, manic victim blanks out in a speechless expression. He's unable to retort or explain his way out of the situation; especially after what I have said.

As the other customers and staff started to chatter again amongst themselves, the frustrated man utters nothing and races out the door like a dog with its tail between its legs.

....I....I did it!

Before Jungkook could react, I turn towards him and grab his arms excitedly. He takes one look at my wide smile, and started to chuckle uncontrollably.

"Pfft...Miss..." he addresses me in between his laughter, wiping tears away from his eyes. "...Your name please?"

I rub the back of my head, slightly embarrassed at what I've done. "Emma." I mention as Jungkook leads me out of the cafe back door, gestured by his manager. I watch his eyelashes flutter down again in deep thought, but this time, he seems to be smiling.

"I know! My name sounds really bland.... I get that alot." I state in a chuckle.

Jungkook, however, doesn't react the way I expect.

"Really?" His reddish lips upturn into a devilish, mischievious grin. Jungkook gazes at me fondly; and raises the tip of his cold fingers to wipe the cake on my face.

"From the moment I saw you..." he says, licking the cake off his finger with a playful smile.

"...Your sweetness kept lingering in the corner of my mind."
