Aftermath

This is my Entry for Contests Weekly Wattpad Contest #36. Enjoy!

A chill wind rustled through the leaves, a squirrel chattering to the pigeons coming too close to his cache of nuts for his liking. I stood near the base of the statue, staring up at where its face used to be before it had been smashed in. The old, flaking graffiti still marred its surface, a reminder of my actions only three weeks ago. Liar, liar, liar, liar, liar. The yellow-painted word was written over and over again, a harsh, unceasing accusation.

"It's interesting to see how long things can last, isn't it?" A feminine voice sounded behind me, causing me to flinch. I drew my attention away from the statue, looking over to meet an easily recognizable set of eyes. "Long time no see, Thaddeus." The woman purred, a cool smile on her face. I nodded shortly in greeting, observing her presence with a cold familiarity. Despite our complex — and rather violent — history, there was a mutual understanding between us now. Alliances could be made in the strangest of people when they share a similar contempt for a person, I supposed. Letting out a short huff of air, I noted that a cold wind had picked up. I cast my gaze out past the park gates to the city beyond. Despite the various buildings that had been destroyed, city life seemed to have returned to normal, as if the past five months had never occurred. My attention returned to the park itself; the fountain placed near the monument, the open field off the path — where several people roamed, admiring the green grass before it becomes laden with colored autumn leaves.

"What do you want, Mayren?" I eventually sighed, watching a family work together to get a kite into the air. Carille Mayren let out a small hmm, following my line of sight. The carefree innocence of the family's interactions seemed such an odd concept to me, and I knew my once-enemy thought the same.

"Walk with me." She offered finally, breaking the silence between us. Turning on her heel, she started down the path leading away from the city, her navy long-coat swaying around her legs in stride. I glanced up at the vandalized statue once more, a faint, cocky grin on my face — a brief memory of what once was — as I gave the figure a hand gesture no living person would receive lightly.

"Good riddance." I muttered to myself, turning away from the monument that had honored the girl who was to blame for it all. My feet carried me towards Carille, who was waiting a few paces away. She had an amused look on her face but made no comment as we began to walk side by side. The brisk afternoon seemed silent aside from the reassuring sounds of nature. A faint laugh of playing children echoed from farther on in the park, the birds chattering as if discussing their preparations for autumn. It was almost peaceful. Or, as peaceful as the aftermath of our apocalypse could get.
