Aftermath: 14
Lenora looked up at what remained of the building that she had been previously occupying with the others. It was destroyed. Pieces of brickwork hung on by mere threads of cable and metallic reinforcing poles, the front half of the building looked obliterated, she didn't know what happened, but she could guess. The fact that paramedics carried out sheet covered forms, she guessed a fight which couldn't be won was fought here by the human agents.
Pressing her lips into a thin line she turned and shielded her eyes against the glare of the sun. She wasn't expecting this, she was expecting to return to this place slightly jetlagged and tired, all prepared to perhaps talk about what had happened; she had yet to be lectured by Charles. Though he knew the parts she played while in Russia he hadn't otherwise passed comment. Sure, he looked displeased, but he hadn't said anything else on the matter.
Lenora guessed that wouldn't happen, not that she particularly wished to be lectured. Good grief she did not want that in her life, ever. Rubbing a hand to her chin she turned and decided that she should perhaps pay attention to what was happening with them now.
"We've made arrangements for you to be taken home immediately." Charles said after some quickly spoken words with Moira.
Lenora tilted her head to the side and slowly sat down next to Hank, as far as she could recall she didn't have a home. She hung her head in her hands and shut her eyes. Where does someone without a home go, exactly? She didn't know anyone, she didn't have family, it wasn't like she could just go crash at someone's house.
"We're not going home." Alex said determinedly. He shifted on the wreckage of the wall and looked about and getting collective nods of agreements.
"What?" Charles turned on his heels and looked to where Alex was sitting, cross armed. The same stoic determined expression was on his face. He wasn't dropping this it seemed.
"Well, he's not going back to prison." Sean offered while nodding to Alex while looking over his sunglasses, Charles just frowned in response and seemed to wish to disagree about this sudden bout of rebellious nature.
"I don't have anywhere to go." Lenora said while looking up with a defeated expression on her face. "How could you just send us all away after finding us?" She pushed her hair out of her face and looked back down at the ground. Sentimentality was something which Lenora was very seldom privy to; the concept was an odd thing, but through the short amount of time spent here she could safely say she had grown to like those around her. They were an interesting and curious collective, and she wished to get to know them more.
"Not all of us can be sent away anyway," Alex said while Lenora looked back at him. "They killed Darwin." He explained as simply as he could. The memories of watching the man struggle to fight back against the attack which was sent his way travelled through Alex's mind. It was horrible. All of it. Lenora who had been keeping Alex's gaze looked away with a shudder,s he felt a twinge of guilt and pain for not getting to know Darwin any better...it was all too late now though, missed opportunity which was never going to return to her.
"And that's all the more reason for you to leave. This is over." Charles said firmly, wishing that the subject wouldn't be pressed anymore. He couldn't lose anyone else. Darwin was enough, and he noticed Angel being missing in action too, he couldn't freely stand here and be content knowing that anyone else could get hurt or go missing.
"Darwin's dead, Charles. And we can't even bury him." Raven stepped forwards and looked to her brother seriously.
Charles sighed and looked at her with equal seriousness, his attention quickly diverted to someone else, his head quickly turned to look at Erik. He had been silent throughout this all so far, standing at the back of the group surveying the destruction and the small group. "We can avenge him." He had said simply.
Charles frowned, Erik had no problems with throwing such a suggestion out. Charles knew full well how easy something like this was for him to suggest and voice. The thought of avenging was tinged with revenge, even if the others didn't quite understand that, Charles did. "Erik, a moment," he walked forwards and moved past him to get a little more distance from them. He glanced at the small group who just sat around looking tired and defeated. Raven sat next to Lenora and seemed to pick up quietly talking to her, she received tired smiles and a few nods from the orange haired girl before they both sat in quiet contemplation. "They're just kids." Charles's eyes slowly turned back to Erik. He may not see it but Charles did. Tired, scared and slightly traumatised kids who had been put through something, and seen things that they shouldn't have to ever witness and see.
"They were kids. Shaw has his army, we need ours." Erik said while easily looking down at Charles, he could see the hesitance lingering, he looked from the group to Erik.
With a sigh Charles turned, "We'll have to train. All of us, yes?" Sparing a look to Erik, Charles just received muted nods and uncertain looks. He could admit the prospect of training wasn't a fun one. But they did all need it in some part. Even those who thought they were in control.
"Well, we can't stay here. Even if they re-opened the department, it's not safe. We've got nowhere to go." Hank said while rubbing his hands together. There wasn't much to save from where they staying, but that still wasn't the point. The ceiling could easily come down at any moment. The whole building was structurally unsafe.
"Yes, we do." Charles said after a moment of thought. "We just need transport." He said while looking to Moira, she got the hint and walked off quickly in search of something for them to all travel in.
Lenora rubbed the back of her neck, sleeping in an upright position didn't do her any favours. She stood and stretched, Raven glanced at her curiously yet didn't question her as she went walking off to further see what damage had been done.
"I don't like it."
Erik who had taken to leaning against debris looked to Lenora as she looked up at the ruined building. He turned too and looked up. As far as damage went, it was right up there. "What part?"
She remained silent for a while thinking over the question. "The part where our supposed enemy couldn't care less about just out rightly killing. But...he is the bad guy, right? Bad guys do that sort of thing." She reasoned while rubbing her arms, she wasn't cold, she just felt uneasy. "This though..." she gestured to the building, or what remained and then looked behind herself. "From someone who escaped a collapsing building too, they're very lucky." Not that Lenora made it a habit to go into places, destroy them and then flee without getting trapped. Once was plenty enough for her. She eyed up scorched looking pieces of brick and frowned, shaking her head she looked wildly upwards again. "Do you think we can stop him?" Her eyes flicked to look sidelong at Erik, he was watching her with a guarded look. "Gut feeling, Erik." Lenora asked quietly, almost sounding a little pleading.
"Together, we could." Lenora raised an eyebrow, Erik sighed and pushed away from his current leaning position.
"Teamwork, huh?"
He smirked, she sounded so unconvinced, "Teamwork."
"You don't look like a teamwork type." She tilted her head to the side. "Sort of got that vibe when you opted to run off without Charles's backing." She explained when he looked a little confused by her statement.
He crossed his arms and looked down at her. "But I wasn't alone, was I?"
Lenora sighed and hung her head. "I wasn't much help. More of a hindrance."
He shook his head, "You helped where you could." Even if it wasn't much, he felt like he should probably try and stop her looking so downhearted. She looked up at him with wide eyes, blinking slowly she seemed to look at him seriously, trying to gauge whether he was being truthful or not. "Training could be useful for you." He decided to change the subject.
"Got to rein in the crazy, hm?"
"You're not crazy. Well, not that I know of. Time may tell however." Erik said while looking up when he heard Charles calling out to them. "With training, with proper control, you could be stronger than you already are. Think about that, Val, before you look so unhappy with the thought of it all." Erik turned and commenced walking forwards.
"Hey! You don't think you're getting out of this, do you?"
"What?" Erik frowned down at her as she appeared by his side.
"Charles said all of us...last time I checked, you were listed in that." Lenora smiled widely, Erik narrowed his eyes and looked suddenly irritated by the thought. "With training, with proper control, you could be stronger than you already are. Think about that, Erik, before you look so unhappy with the thought of it all." Erik just took to glaring at her as she suddenly grinned and let out a laugh before running from his side and taking to walking beside Raven, Erik watched her go with a short sigh. That was definitely going to be the last time he tried to reassure someone, he didn't appreciate the words being sent back at him. He looked angrily to Charles before pulling himself up and into the large truck which had been found for them. Training, Erik was fine without training, he didn't need it. The prospect of it just irked him.
"What have I done?" Charles asked and didn't get an answer as he was suddenly ushered around the front. They needed directions to their new destination, and he was the only one – apart from Raven, of course – who knew the way there.
