Exploration and Exile
Mumbo Jumbo POV
"Mumbo," Grian said, concerned. "What makes you think that?"
I sigh. "It's not a coincidence, Grian. With Wilbur and that other man showing up, and now suddenly the world is breaking. I don't know how all of this started, but they have something to do with it. The moon isn't naturally growing bigger, it's something from out of this world..."
Grian let out a little chuckle, but he was trying to suppress it. "Sorry," he said apologetically. "Just, out of this world, moon, and space jokes."
I sigh, that sounds like some corny joke Scar would make or something. I stare off into the distance, out of the observatory, looking at the moon. In the shadows of the moon I can see a silhouette flying away, and on top of that a figure standing on my mountain, calling to them. The ground shook, the tremors continuing. I turn back to Grian, about to open my mouth to speak. Then I hear it, an ear piercing shriek, right from down by the Boatem Pole.
Grian blinks, confused. "Who was that, Mumbo?"
I shrug. "It must have been Scar or Impulse, Wilbur has the same accent as ours and Pearl has a completely different one."
Grian thought for a moment, pondering my thinking. "You know what Mumbo, somehow you're right, even if you're not a potato man anymore."
I groan. I had indeed changed out of my potato man suit, in favor for my suit again. I was getting quite noticeable eye bags under my eyes, everybody was. Even Pearl, who had a pair of really cute pajamas on.
"Well let's go check it out," Grian said impatiently. He sprinted out of the observatory, gliding away, and I followed him.
We landed by the Boatem Pole, no longer seeing anyone there. We looked at each other, confused. Where was that scream coming from?
Then a bit away I see Scar, leading a man away towards his house. "Scar!" I call. "Wait up!" He doesn't hear me.
We start sprinting after him, going to his starter base, hoping to catch up to him. As we do we hear a call behind us. "Mumbo! Grian! Wait!" We turn around, only to see Wilbur standing there, panting.
"Hey guys," he said with a little wave, his hands on his knees. "I'd be careful if I were you."
Wilbur POV
"Pearl!" I call. "Come back! Please!" She ignores me, flying away into the distance. Then I hear a shriek, an ear-piercing one, no less.
I look down off of the mountain for the source, only to see Schlatt, respawned by the Boatem Pole. A figure slowly approached him... and I think it's Scar!
I should go warn him, I think. But a part of me wants to stay out of it and see what happens. Schlatt is probably pissed at me anyways. Besides, there's something about Scar that could change Schlatt for the better. He's the fun and funky friend he needs.
Scar seemed to lead Schlatt off into his starter base, as his mega base was far from completion. Behind them two more figures landed behind them, landing gracefully. No surprise, it was Grian and Mumbo. Notably, Mumbo was out of the entire Potato Man getup and was now sporting a suit.
"Scar! Wait up!" Mumbo called. They started running after him, lagging just a bit behind. I run after them and call out to them, "Mumbo! Grian! Wait!" They turned around to face me, I was panting exhaustedly. Why can't my life just be normal?
"Hey guys," I said, waving a bit. "I'd be careful if I were you."
"Uh, hey, Wilbur.." Grian said awkwardly and nervously. "What do you mean 'be careful'? We were just going to talk to Scar."
I sigh. "You will never trust me, will you? I know you're just going after Schlatt."
They looked at each other, confused. "Who's Schlatt?" Mumbo asked.
I blinked. "The other man from my world." Had they been telling the truth? Or had they just not known who Schlatt was?
"Oh, yeah, him," Grian said, calm but also slightly aggravated. "I remember, you mentioned him with Xisuma before. That was who we were going after, we just weren't sure who it was."
Mumbo nodded silently, going along with what Grian had said.
We stood there in awkward silence for a moment, but like the weirdo I was I decided to speak up.
"So," I said, deciding whether to bite my tongue or not. "Pearl may have... done something to Schlatt that may or may not have pissed him off pretty badly."
"What did she do?" Grian asked, rolling his eyes. "Knowing Pearl, it was probably just an accident or whatever."
I don't know what came over Grian, but I do know I don't like it. "Well Grian," I replied snarkily. "Pearl actually cut his head off and killed him, on purpose."
"WHAT?!?!?" Mumbo exploded. "SHE KILLED HIM ON PURPOSE?!?!?"
Why was he overreacting so much? I'd say killing people is really normal, and I wouldn't say it wasn't justified.
Grian looked at me, his eyes sinking in worry. "Ah, Wilbur. I suppose no one has told you this yet. Mumbo has a kind of... thing going on, he calls it 'Peace, Love, and Plants'. We mentioned it a while ago, didn't we? Anyways, he basically is against eating meat, won't kill anyone, and has to replant every tree he chops down." He laughed a bit. "We actually had a mini 'Tree War' where I would plant a bunch of trees and he would have to plant all of them. The war ended with us signing a 'treety'."
I stared at him in disbelief. "How could he ever do that?!" I asked. "I bet the amount of trees you planted was ridiculous, wasn't it?"
Grian snorted. "Yep, I'm a prankster. For a while all of Boatem was covered in trees."
"Well Grian," Mumbo said, interrupting our nice little conversation. "I say we gather the rest of Boatem for a little meeting on what to do about this. It's not like when you kill everyone in pranks, Pearl had actual bad intentions."
Grian sighed. "Fine Mumbo, but only because you're the CEO."
"Well, uh," I said, joining in. "I probably shouldn't be the one to go get Schlatt and Scar, he's pretty annoyed at me."
"Okay," Mumbo replied. "I'll go get them. Would you like to go get Impulse, Wilbur?"
"Sounds good," I said back to him. "Where will we meet?"
He thought for a moment, and then Grian spoke up. "How about Treeza?" he suggested. "I know it's weird, but we don't want anyone else butting in the conversation."
Mumbo shrugged. "Sounds good to me. We'll meet you there, Grian." Mumbo went off, going towards Scar's house.
"So," I said to Grian. "Where is Impulse's base?"
Grian pointed to a giant building on the ocean. "That's Impulse's mega-base, the iDimpy factory."
"Great! Thanks Grian!" I said, walking off.
"Wait!" He stopped me. "I have a spare elytra and some fireworks you can use, so take them, okay?"
I accepted them gratefully. "Thanks, Big G." Saying that reminded me of Tommy, and how he would always call someone 'Big' and then the first letter of their name; Like 'Big Q' for Quackity and once 'Big D' for Dream.
He looked at me, a bit startled that I had called him that, but he accepted it. "No problem Wil," he replied. "Anything for a friend," he said with a smile.
I put the elytra on and activated a firework, soaring into the sky like I had seen others do before me. I veered in the direction of the factory. Wow, this is so much cooler when you're doing it yourself. I landed in the front of the base and walked in confidently.
I wandered around for a few minutes before finding a huge storage system, and Impulse looking through chests. "No redstone left," he muttered to himself, digging through.
"Uh, hey, Impulse," I said, sticking my head in the doorway.
"Oh, hi!" he said, looking up to me. "You're Wilbur, right?"
I nodded. "Yeah, that's me. Mumbo and Grian asked me to grab you for a meeting."
"Sounds good," he said absentmindedly, getting up from the chests. "Sorry about that," he said, finally looking me in the eyes. "Scar asked me for some materials and I was trying to find them."
"No problem," I replied pleasantly. "At least all of them are sorted and not in random chests."
Impulse chuckled. "Yeah, you've got a pretty good point."
He followed me out and we soared into the air. "Where's the meeting?" Impulse asked.
"In Treeza," I replied. "I don't even know what that is but yeah."
Impulse laughed, as we landed in front of the Boatem Pole. He pointed to a giant tree monster holding a van. "That, is Treeza."
I blink for a moment, then have a realization. "Oh yeah, I remember that thing. What is it, exactly?"
"It's Mumbo's starter base," he replied dryly. "Pearl and Grian actually built it. His base before was just the van, but when the tree war started they put in in Treeza's hand. Mumbo just decided to keep it, as it was pretty cool, so yeah. "
I guess Grian really was a prankster. "That is a good one," I said with a smirk. "Grian's pretty clever for that."
"Yes he is," Impulse said with a chuckle.
We each used one more rocket to propel into the tree, where inside we found a very angry Schlatt being pinned to the wall by Scar. Mumbo was standing by, panting and sweating.
Inside of Treeza wasn't much room, but it was very quaint. I could definitely see how this nature inspired build could have been Mumbo's starter base.
"Hey Wilbur," Mumbo said with a little tired smile. "You're friend here was difficult to persuade, but I did it in the end!" His smile dropped. "Though it did take both Scar and I to drag him quite hardly."
I looked at Schlatt right in the eyes, and he looked right back at me. It seemed there was a fire in his eyes, one that was craving violence and revenge. "You," he spat. "What did you do to me?"
I looked at his sad pathetic face. Did he really care about nothing but getting justice? The worst part was it seemed he only cared about himself. Hopefully we could get him back to how he was before Pearl came into the picture. I took a deep breath before speaking to him. "Schlatt," I said calmly. "All of this has been a misunderstanding. What happened earlier with Pearl was a GIANT miscommunication. She had no ill intentions, but she made a mistake. We're here for the reason of addressing what's going to happen, okay?"
"That's right," Grian said, joining the conversation. "And together, all of Boatem will decide what's going to happen," addressing Impulse and Scar.
"So, everybody," Mumbo said tensely. "I call this meeting of Boatem Incorporated."
Impulse cleared his throat and spoke. "So... where is Pearl? We can't really have a meeting without her? And shouldn't this decision about her consider her? She's our 5th member, the top of the Boatem Pole! If I dare to say it, she's the light and life of Boatem."
"Hey!" Scar said objectively, narrowing his eyes at Impulse. "What about me? I'm a big part of the life too?!"
"So yeah, anyways," Grian said, cringing and ignoring Scar's comment. "As you can see from our 'friend' here, Pearl has done some... stuff."
"Yeah," Schlatt spat. "She killed me. She sliced off my head, idiots." He struggled some more from Scar. "I don't know about you, but I'd like some sweet revenge."
Mumbo sighed. "I don't know about you guys, but I think we as a company operate under the motto 'Peace, Love, and Plants', am I right?"
Everybody except for Schlatt groaned. "Come on Mumbo. Just get over the peace love and plants thing over with. You're not even a potato anymore!" Grian said with an eye roll.
"Fine," Mumbo said with a huff. "But what she did was still wrong, and she has to face some consequences."
"Well that's honestly fine with me," Impulse said with a shrug. His eyes then softened up. "But I know Pearl, and she wouldn't do something malicious on purpose. There has to be a reason, and we have to find out what it was."
"Sounds good to me," Grian said. "But we do have to punish her somehow."
Mumbo bit his lip, thinking for a moment. "I propose that we temporarily ban her, but once we find out her motivation, and if it's justified we let her back in."
I look at Mumbo, questioning this decision. Before he seemed to be very bent on his peace love and plants thing, but now he was opening up to more lax punishments. I don't mind though, Pearl really doesn't deserve all of this. This was just an honest, pure mistake.
Scar loosened his grip on Schlatt. "So how do you feel about that?" he asked him. "Can you roll with that for now?"
The ground shook, harder than ever. Mumbo tripped, and he fell down to the floor. He got up, brushing off his knees. I thought of Xisuma, who had an entire other category of tremors that he could feel, and it was all because of me, Schlatt and I.
"Fine," Schlatt said, breaking free of Scar. "But I want a full apology later, okay?" He looked at me, clearly not trusting me, gritting his teeth.
We all looked at eachother, taking this into account. "Fine with me," I said with a shrug. "You guys want me to go get Pearl?"
"Sounds good to me," Impulse said. "I'm not sure where she'd go, though. Maybe to Gem, that would make sense."
"Well if you're going to leave," Mumbo said, butting in. "I know it's out of the way, but could you possibly stop by Iskall to grab some redstone? I'm kind of at a loss for some, and I'm pretty sure he has."
"Does no one else have redstone here?" I asked. "I saw Impulse's crazy amount of chests."
Impulse sighed. "Well Mumbo used basically all of our redstone, it's pretty ridiculous."
"Sounds good to me, then," I replied. "Do you guys have a map I can borrow? I kind of don't know my way around the island."
"Sure," Mumbo said with a little smile. "I've got one I can grab for you."
"So Boatem," Scar said, speaking up. "We all agree on what's going to happen?"
Everybody nodded, and then everybody started leaving. Mumbo went to grab me the map, Impulse went back to his base, Scar brought Schlatt back to his house, and then it was only Grian and I.
Grian sighed. "Isn't life so complicated, Wilbur? I don't know about you, but I miss the days of silly wars that I started, Scar swindling everyone with his products, planking each other with ender crystals... I don't know if you know how I feel Wilbur, but I just miss the simple days."
I thought back to my old life on the Dream SMP, comparing it to what Grian said. We had wars, but they were real, with death. We had scamming each other, but with Tommy abs I it had been drugs. I didn't even know what ender crystals were, but they sounded destructive. Life on Hermitcraft was so much simpler, and so much nicer.
"Where I come from it's different, Grian," I said, thinking back. "Whilst everyone has some fun, I suppose, so many things are serious. The things happening here dwarf some of the conflicts I faced."
He seemed disappointed at that. "I wasn't trying to be so grim," he said sadly. "Anyways, on a happier note, you're going out to explore the island! I suppose I should get you a list of everyone and what they look like, just in case," he said, making notes in his head.
"Sounds good to me," I replied nonchalantly. "I'll come with you to your base if you want."
Grian shrugged. "Sounds good, follow me!" He said, running out and gliding. I followed him into a large, dark alleyway.
The alley had many buildings made out of many different materials, each with its own style. Some curved inwards and some outwards. Throughout all of that there were dozens, no, probably hundreds, of candles floating from the ceiling. The end of the alley wasn't finished yet, though.
"This is Midnight Alley!" Grian said proudly. "My mega base. Inspired by Diagon Alley from Harry Potter, you know it?"
I thought for a moment, again back to the Dream SMP. "I'm familiar with it," I replied. "Where I come from we had a 'Harry Potter House' for marriages, but none of them ever actually happened."
Grian looked confused at that, but shrugged it off. He started rustling through a chest before looking up with a grim smile. "You'll never guess," he said quietly. "Where I already had a book." He took a book right from out of his inventory, and held it up to show me.
I groaned inwardly, let out a sigh, and then chuckled. Oh Grian...
"Anyways," he said with a laugh, opening the book. "While I'm writing everyone's names I might as well tell you too. I'm also gonna draw a little picture, but it might not be the best okay?" He let out a little embarrassed blush.
I gave him a sweet smile. "Sounds good to me. So tell me everyone, Grian."
He thought for a moment. "Of course you know all of us in Boatem, me, Mumbo, Scar, Impulse, and Pearl. You've met Xisuma, and... I guess that's everyone you've met so far."
"Actually, I met Doc and Ren," I remarked. "I've also heard mentions of Gem and Iskall, but nobody else."
"Oh, where'd you meet Doc and Ren?" Grian asked curiously. "I didn't realize they'd come by here."
"Oh, they built that weird goat pole thing and were the ones to originally take in Schlatt," I told him.
He looked surprised, but shrugged it off. "So in the western region we have Welsknight, Etho, Iskall, Doc, and Ren. In the southern region you'll find Joe, Cleo, XB, Zedaph, and Hypno. In the center region is Gem, False, iJevin, Beef, and Stress. In the eastern region we have Tango, Keralis, BDubs, and Xisuma. Then last but definitely not least is the northern region, with Boatem village, Cubfan, and TinFoilChef, who we call TFC for short."
Well that's a lot more people than I thought there would be. Though I guess there were 28 people on the DreamSMP, and only 26 here, but when you're hit with all of them at once it seems so crazy. "Thanks, Grian," I said, while trying remember all the names. "But I don't think I'll be able to memorize all of these."
Grian handed me the book. "Well then take this," he said with a smile. It almost reminded me of when I had given Pearl the book I had wrote, the beginning of the end. I opened the book only to see each Hermit's name and a sketch of their face.
"Wow Grian," I said, astonished. "These drawings are amazing!" They were all extremely detailed, and for the ones I had met the pictures were a no-ringer for them.
"Ah, it's not really a big deal," he said, embarrassed. "It's just a natural thing for me."
Why he couldn't accept he was so good was a mystery to me, but I couldn't dwell on it. "Great!" I said excitedly. "Now all we need is Mumbo, and I can be off!"
Then in just that moment Mumbo came gliding in, panting. "There you are!" He said with a sense of relief. "I've been looking for you everywhere!"
"Oh, hey Mumbo," I said with a wave. "Sorry about that, but Grian couldn't help showing me his base."
Mumbo looked annoyed, I guess he really had looked everywhere for us. "Well Wilbur," he said exhaustedly. "Here's the map I promised you. Is that a book with all of the Hermits' names and faces? Smart." He said, handing me a map.
The map was basically exactly what Grian had described to me, with peoples' individual bases marked with their names.
I pocketed it and the book, looking up with a smile. "Well I guess I'll see you guys soon," I said, feeling kind of nervously. It was weird, I'd already been here for a while, and hadn't actually gone anywhere yet. Now I was leaving, alone.
Mumbo smiled sadly. "Wilbur, I want you to know, if anything happens, like..." he looked around nervously. "If the moon were to crash while you're out, I want you to know you will always have a home at Boatem." A tear dripped from his sleep deprived-looking face.
Grian took a deep breath, seemingly not to tremble. "He's right," he followed up. "If we go out, and you're not here, know that you've changed all of our lives."
I felt like I could cry. All I had done for them was cause trouble, and now they we're getting all sappy for me. I enveloped both of them in a hug, embracing them.
After hugging for a minute, I let go. I started waking out, took one last look behind me, and smiled. Then I leapt up, activating a rocket.
It was time for an adventure.
