"Aankhein yun churate ho"

Sumit is now back in Virat's social circle but Virat has a certain unease regarding him and his liking for Sai. The mere thought of him interacting with Sai even for professional reasons is burning Virat. But then he cannot deny that Sumit has almost accurately assessed the reasons for his and Sai’s separation.

What was Sai’s mistake? She kept asking me for the truth. Even said she will support me. And yet I offered nothing.

Sullen by his behaviour towards her, Virat tries hard to focus on the job at hand. He decides to listen to some music to distract his thoughts.

Kabhi kabhi laage
Raha ansuna
Jo bhi mann mein laage
Kaha ankaha
Kinaare, kinaare
Pe reh gayi, naiyya re
Savaalo, bhare ho
Ye Saare, nazare
Roz roz aate ho
Aankhien you churate ho
Hai mujhe lage jaise
Khud ko hi chhupate ho

The lyrics not letting him distract, Virat feels relieved when he hears the constable calling him.
“Sir.. aapse milne koi Dr. Sumit aaye hai”
“Bhejo” he replies dryly, Sumit being the last person he wants to see now.
Sumit enters his cabin and takes up a seat in front of Virat.
“Hi…Virat ek help chahiye thi yaar”
“Bata na kya hua” hoping it is not about Sai.
“Are I told you na ki ab yahi settle hone ka soch raha hun… so I need to find a proper house… koi agent etc pata hai kya?”

The idea that Sumit might settle down in Nagpur does not sit well with Virat, his mind registering the possible implications of this action.

“Hmmm… kuch hai log… jo help kar sakte hai.. Let me see” and with that Virat pulls out his phone when he hears Sumit say,
“Ye ladki koun hai tere screensaver pe? Chupa Rustam.. Dikhao jara”
Suddenly unsure how to deal with this, Virat tries to hide his phone when a chuckling Sumit quickly grabs it and presses the power button that lights up the screen.
A quick glance at it and a stunned Sumit looks up at Virat who is desperately trying to avoid the probe.
“Ye tu aur Sai hai na? Uski shaadi tere se hui hai? Ya hui thi?”
The picture on the screensaver is from the Anniversary party of Pakhis parents… A picture that he has not even thought of changing even after all this time.
Finally, looking down with resignation lacing his voice, Virat answers
“Hui thi. We got divorced 8 months back”
“So then why didn't you tell me the other day” Sumits voice is a bit sharper than normal.

Virat looks up at him, pondering over the tone of his voice.
“Kya batata? Kuch batane layak nahi hai”
“I am sorry” says Sumit… “Mujhe tere aur teri family ke baare main aisa nahi bolna chahiye tha”
The genuineness in his voice startles Virat, and he takes a good glance at him and smiles.
“It's okay… kuch jyada galat bhi nahi tha tera guess. We separated because I didn't trust her enough” explains Virat fondly looking at the photo again.
“To ab?”
“Ab kya?”
“Tujhe dekh ke lag raha hai ki kuch baki hai abhi bhi? Do you regret it?”
Virat looks at Sumit, his eyes glazed, a lone tear threatening to burst out of it.
“Ofcourse”
“And you love her?”
A solemn smile breaks across Virat's face,
“Yes”
“To phir jaane kyun diya?”
A stillness envelopes the room, Virat unable to find the words to express himself.
Sumit realises his hesitation, gently taps his shoulder and says,
“It's okay.. Mat bata.. Par agar tujhe itna hi regret hai to think about it and do something about it”
Virat nods at Sumit, a thin smile curling his lips. Sumit leaves, as the conversation has taken a different turn.

The day passes by in an uneasy haze, Virat reminiscing about all that has gone wrong with him and Sai. The room suddenly feels suffocating and he wishes for some fresh air.
Getting into his car, Virat goes to Naag nadi, something that he had avoided so far since it reminds him of his time with Sai.

However, he is in for a shock when he sees Sai sitting there, forlorn and looking at the sun setting down. He contemplates whether to go and talk to her but seeing her here, in all her glory and the conversation with Sumit running through his mind, he approaches her cautiously.
“Yahan baith sakta hun?”

Startled by the voice and his sudden presence, Sai hesitates whether to get up and go but decides otherwise as she knows that it is practically impossible to avoid him living in Nagpur and having so many connections. She decides that she should face him and not be perturbed by him.

“Public park hai ye Mr. Chavan, you can sit wherever you want”
“Mr. Chavan??? Kya hamara koi rishta nahi hai Sai?”
“Hamara kabhi bhi koi rishta tha Mr. Chavan? Koi aisa jisme main aapko kisi aur naam se pukaru? Jo tha vo to aapne khatam kar diya”
“Aur jo dosti ka rishta tha vo?”
“Kaisi dosti? Dosti hoti to aaj hum yahan nahi hote… ye sab jo hua hai vo aise nahi hua hota”
Virat falls silent, lost at words. A while later, he speaks,
“Maine kaha tha tumse, trust me, aisa koi rishta nahi hai mera Shruti ke saath, main tumhe sab batane wala tha”
Sai snickers, tilts her head and looks at him with her big expressive eyes.
Feeling helpless to meet her gaze, Virat looks away.
“Aapne kaha aur main maan lu? Aapne kabhi trust kiya tha mujh pe? Ajinkya ke saath kya kiya tha aapne yaad hai? Main sirf baat kar rahi thi usse, aap to kisi ko biwi banake, uske bacche ko apna naam deke official kar aaye sab kuch. And you still think I shouldn't feel bad about it? Baki sab chod dijiye… humari mantro uccharo se shaadi hui thi. I was your legally wedded wife… us rishte ki to kuch izzat rakhte”
“...”
“Aapko ek baat nahi pata, I had started feeling something for you. I wanted to give this marriage a chance.. Aapse yahi baat karne wali thi main jab vapas aapke room main shift hui thi..”
Virat looks at her, with immense hope at her words. But what she says next, feels like someone has put daggers through him.
“Anyway, ab ye sab ka koi matlab nahi hai… You hurt me, my self esteem, made a fool out of me… I can never tolerate that and I will never forgive you for that”
“But I also know that it is impossible for me to avoid you in social situations, so I would prefer if we can keep it civil. Goodbye Mr. Chavan, hope you have a good life”
Sai gets up, picks up her stuff and leaves, not even looking at him as she goes.

Jiya jo ye mera
Dhoonde lamhe saare
Jahaan tu tha mera
Wahaan ab dhuaan re
Pukaare phire hai
Tujhe dil, mera re
Savaare Savaare
Bheegi ye, akhiyan re
Roz roz aate ho
Aankhien yu churate ho
Hai mujhe lage jaise
Khud ko hi chhupate ho

The lyrics running through him subconsciously, the dam bursts and Virat sits their quietly, cursing himself and his stupid actions.
