Chapter 27: The Traitor

Third POV

"I don't care." The god of death bluntly stated which earned him incredulous stares from the others.

"What the f*ck, Reaper?!" Geno couldn't believe what the grim reaper had just said, as well as Stretch. "Blue needs our help! We must save him! Who knows what Error will to do him! Blue could-!"

"Blue is not my problem." Reaper said and from the tone of his voice, flat and cold, it was obvious that he doesn't really care. Stretch clenched his hands into fists and grinded his teeth to hold himself from striking a bone at the god of death's face.

"How could you be so insensitive?!" Geno asked in disbelief with a hint irritation in his voice.

Reaper only folded his arms over his chest. This was one of the things he hated about Geno. Selfless. Always putting others before himself. He doesn't want Geno to risk his life to save a mere mortal in the clutch of the Destroyer.

Reaper just wants Geno to understand that he means a lot more than any mortal in the multiverse.

"Fine!" Geno suddenly said when Reaper failed to reply. "Do what you want. We'll save Blue on our own." Geno finalized as he sends the grim reaper disgusted glares before turning away.

But Reaper swiftly grabbed his wrist, making him turned back to the god of death. Geno opened his mouth to say something, but his words were lost upon seeing the god of death's face. It was etched with anger, an ugly snarl adorning his lips and his eyes were darker than usual. Geno would've stepped back if not for the hand gripping his wrist and keeping him in place.

"You are not going anywhere." Reaper stated in a threateningly low voice that sends shivers down their spines. Fear gripped Geno's soul as his body was paralyzed.

That was when Ink decided to step in. He placed a hand on Geno's shoulder to calm him down and looked at the god of death.

"Reaper, I understand that you don't care, but we need your help." Ink said in a soft pleading manner. The creative skeleton knows he alone cannot handle the Destroyer. If he does, he would've done so a long time ago.

"No. I'm not letting Geno get involve in this mess." Came an instant reply from Reaper. His gaze briefly shifting to the smaller skeleton and his grip lightly tightening around the other's wrist. Unwilling to let go.

"Fine. Geno will stay here as we deal with Error and save Blue." Ink said. Even he himself doesn't want Geno anywhere near Error.

Reaper was silent for a moment. Contemplating his choices. He doesn't really want to be involved in this mess and he doesn't really care about Blue. And going to the battle means he'll have to leave Geno alone. Reaper doesn't want to leave Geno's side. Something terrible always happen when he leaves.

Upon sensing the god of death's hesitation, Ink continued "We have to get Blue out of there or else he might turn into an error."

Stretch froze upon hearing that. Dread settling in his nonexistent stomach. His sweet, innocent little brother turning into an error and destroying universe? Stretch would never let that happen.

As he listens to the creator and god of death's argument, he can't help but be frustrated to where things were currently going. They were planning on leaving Geno. No, that can't happen. They need Geno to save Blue.

Stretch didn't tell anyone why Error took Blue.

'Give me the glitch and I will give your brother back'

Stretch grinded his teeth. At first, the tall skeleton has no idea who's the glitch Error was talking about. Because he calls everyone a glitch. But remembering Geno, the only monster he knows who was an actual glitch, he confirmed his target.

But with the god of death guarding Geno around, it's not going to be that easy. He knows Reaper is obsessed with the glitched skeleton, but Stretch didn't anticipate that they'll be in a relationship soon. It would've been easier if Geno was still trapped in the Save Screen.

But there's no point in pondering that now. He needs to form a new plan. He needs to separate Reaper from Geno. But how?

"I said NO!" Reaper's final answer. Stretch kept staring at Geno and Reaper have a bad feeling about it.

Reaper dragged Geno by his wrist and away from the tall skeleton. "We're leaving." He declared.

Stretch was alarmed and reacted on instinct and grabbed Geno's other wrist. He realized his mistake a little too late when Reaper glared at him murderously.

But he didn't let go. He can't let Geno escape. The tall skeleton gulped down his fear and shakily opened his mouth to say something. "If you don't want to help, then fine. But you can't tell Geno what to do. We need all the help we can get and if Geno wants to help, that's his choice. Not yours." Stretch said with determined look on his face. Yet inside he was shaking. He was amazed of himself that he didn't stutter.

For his brother, he will face the god of death's wrath.

But not even a second after he said that, he felt like taking it all back for he found himself in a deep predicament as the tip of Reaper's scythe was inches away from his neck. Even Geno have look of terror on his face.

"Get your filthy hands off MY Geno." Reaper's voice was low and seemingly echoing throughout the whole room. A sudden sense of dread loomed over them, especially Stretch who reluctantly let go.

The scythe retreated before disappearing. Reaper gently but firmly yanked on Geno's wrist, making the smaller skeleton stumble and landed on the god of death's chest. Reaper wrapped his arms around the glitched skeleton's shoulders protectively.

"We're leaving." He once again declared as he glared daggers at Stretch before turning away and started gathering his magic to make a portal.

Stretch was disappointed at himself. Then an image of brother flashed in his head. It was enough to strengthen his resolve to save his brother. But he must take Geno from Reaper first. And he will do it even if have to use brute force.

Stretch activated his magic as his left eye glows warm orange. He locked on his target. Just one yank was all he need to take Geno from Reaper's arms. Quick, while Reaper was distracted in forming a portal.

Stretch managed to 'grip' Geno's soul using his magic which made the smaller skeleton gasped and instinctively placed a hand over his chest.

It caught Reaper's attention, unfortunately for Stretch who immediately retracted his magic as not be traced. The god of death worriedly asked what was wrong, but Geno just shook his head when he felt the foreign magic disappeared.

Reaper was not satisfied with the answer but he'll let it slide for now. Right now, he has to take him to safety. So, he proceeded with creating a portal to his home.

Stretch was running out of time. With one last desperate attempt, he sends out his magic but before it could even reach his target, the portal was completed and he froze upon the sight of what's on the other side.

Everything was destroyed.

Reaper and Geno gaped in shock at the sight of what used to be the grim reaper's home. The lone house in the middle of the clearing surrounded by dead trees, was burnt down to ashes. There's still some leftover fire burning away whatever remains. Charred woods were sticking out all over the place and rubbles littering the ground. Dark and thick smoke was rising from every burnt material mixed with ashes making it a little hard to breath.

One would thought it was accident if not for the magic blue strings tangled all over the place.

Ink was unfazed. He's seen it all countless of times. He grabbed his giant paintbrush and stepped through the portal. He cautiously looked around the area. Carefully stepping through the debris.

"Stay here." Reaper told Geno before following the creator through the portal. He summoned his scythe in preparation for the possible incoming battle as he as well looked around.

Geno couldn't help but tear up. Glowing blue tears forming on the brim of his only visible eye. Stretch could only have sympathized. He realized that they were all in the same situation. They were all threatened by the Destroyer.

Maybe taking Geno to Error wasn't the only way to get his brother back.

Sans and Fell grew curious when everything went quiet and walked over to the portal. To say that they were shock was an understatement. Frisk as well was sad about it.

Geno stepped through the portal. Sans was about to pull him back but for some reason, he can't get through. It was like there was some invisible wall blocking him from going any further. Just like what happened when the first time he created a portal through Reapertale. Stretch and Fell watched him with curiosity before doing the same.

Stretch reached out his hand to the portal only to be met with the same invisible wall.

"Geno!" Sans called out through the glass-like barrier. Geno turned around upon hearing his name. as well as Reaper. "We can't get through." Sans said. Geno just blinked at them before reaching his hand out to the portal and it easily passes through.

"Um, Ink!" Geno called out and the creator jogged to them. "Why can't they go through?" the glitched skeleton asked as he pointed at the rest of the skeleton on the other side of the portal.

"Oh, that's simple. This is the god's realm. Mortals aren't allowed here." Ink briefly explained which only rises more questions to Geno.

"Wait. What about me? I'm a mortal. How did I get through?" Geno asked with utter confusion.

"It's because you're a go-" Ink stopped himself which made Geno raised an eye brow. Ink started sweating nervously. He almost slipped. "-glitch." The creator quickly amended. "It's because you're a glitch. You defy the laws of the universe."

Geno seems to buy it which relieved Ink. "I'm coming, Reaper!" Ink pretended that the god of death called out to him before running towards the cloaked skeleton. He might as well leave them be before he says something he'll regret.

Ink heaved a relieve sigh as he wiped his sweat as soon as he was far enough. Phew, he almost spilled the beans. He walked towards the grim reaper who had his back turned to him.

The creator noticed Reaper was holding something in his hand. A red fabric littered with burnt holes, partially melted from the intense heat and tangled with blue strings.

It looked like Papyrus' scarf. But Reaper knows better. It was not his brother's scarf.

It was Geno's scarf.

Reaper untangled the red fabric from the blue string, using his scythe to cut off the knotted parts before floating towards the portal where Geno was waiting with the others.

Geno noticed his approach and was about to ask how's the search was going until his gaze landed on the destroyed piece of red material in Reaper's hand.

His mind went blank as his body was paralyzed. 'Papyrus' was the only thing in his mind.

The others watched, silently sympathizing with the small skeleton.

Reaper handed the burnt scarf to Geno who stared at it disbelievingly. "Geno, I-... I'm sorry..." the god of death started but the rest of his words never reached Geno's ears as he was consumed in his own world.

He didn't even notice the tears pouring down his face. How could he forget about Papyrus. He's been so engrossed about his 'personal' life that he forgot about his Papyrus. The only reason why he was still fighting. His goal to end the genocides. His mission. His purpose.

He forgotten it all.

Geno have never felt so ashamed of himself. How could he abandon his Papyrus.

A gentle hand landed on his shoulder and he looked up to find Reaper gazing at him with worried expression. He was talking. Reaper was saying something, but Geno can't hear him. It sounded distant. So far away.

But as he stared at the god of death, he remembered how it all came to be. How did everything get to this point.

Geno gently shrugged the hand on his shoulder and walked away. Reaper was hurt at the action, but he knows the other have it even harder. He followed Geno and found him walking toward the closest fire.

Reaper watched him closely, not wanting the smaller skeleton to hurt himself.

And that's when Geno did what no other Sans would do. He let the fire consumes his brother's beloved scarf. Reaper's eyes widened in surprise. So does Ink who was watching from afar.

Geno, with great effort, let the fabric fall into the fire. He watched with heavy heart as the material burn into ashes. The only thing that was left of his brother.

Because it doesn't matter anymore. The scarf only brings out the painful memories and reminds him of everything he lost, his failures and mistakes. It's the last thing that kept him chained to his old miserable self. In order to move on, he must let go.

When it was all gone, he felt like he could breathe again. He wiped his tears away and turned back to Reaper who was patiently waiting for him.

Geno let out a smile tainted with tears. Reaper was relieved. He wrapped his arms around the smaller skeleton. "You did the right thing." The god of death whispered. He was honestly scared that Geno might broke down and shut him out again.

"Thank you." Geno whispered back as he snuggled against the grim reaper's chest. Because if not for Reaper, he would've never thought it would be possible for him to move on from his brother's death.

It was Reaper who helped him heal, protected him and made him feel loved. It was Reaper who freed him from his prison, from his misery. Reaper saved him from the fate of endless pain.

Reaper changed his destiny.

He's no longer chained down by his tragic past. He doesn't have to watch the genocides anymore. He doesn't have to endure the unbearable pain that his wounds that never heals bring.

Back then there was only grieve and sorrow. There was nothing to hold on to but grudge and revenge.

But Reaper made him feel more. Gave him something better to hold on to. And he was thankful for that.

Because of Reaper, he was able to move on.

To be continued...
