Chapter 12: Worried Friends
Third POV
Reaper and Geno landed softly on the couch inside the house hugging each other. They stayed like that for a while with Reaper patiently waiting for Geno to maybe fall asleep.
'At least if he's asleep he'll be in peace', Reaper thought as he comfortingly rubbed Geno's back.
He's really worried that Geno might be already beyond his breaking point. So much have happened in just a single day.
Reaper looked out the window and found that it was already dark. They missed lunch and weren't in the mood for dinner. What a bad habit.
"Reaper." Geno called audibly, his voice cracking and trembling.
"Hmm?"
Geno pulled away and Reaper was surprised to see him smiling.
Geno's smile expresses pure relief and exhaustion at the same time.
*sniff* " I did it." Geno began as tears continuously rolled down his face but his smile never waver. "I f-finally avenged my brother."
Realization dawned on Reaper. Geno had turned all his bottled up anger, frustration and other negative emotions towards the Chara of this universe. Geno took revenge.
And seeing that it has a positive effect on Geno made Reaper smile with relief as he replied: "yes. Yes, you did." His shoulders relaxed as the tension left his body.
Geno smiled wider like a child seemingly proud of himself and hugged Reaper affectionately.
Reaper let out a soft chuckle and hug back. "You did a great job", he whispered.
Reaper honestly thought that Geno had finally broken. Pushed beyond limit. But it seems like he was wrong.
Geno didn't break, he broke free from all the grief and misery that always held him down like heavy metal chains.
And now, Geno can finally heal.
"Want something to drink?" The grim reaper asked after a few moments of silence. Geno hesitated for a moment before nodding weakly. He pulled away and let Reaper go.
Reaper stood up and disappeared into the kitchen.
Geno was left alone with his thoughts. He wiped his face clean before leaning against the backrest of the couch and staring down the floor. A ghostly smile adorning his face.
He feels like something heavy was lifted off his chest. It felt great. Relaxed. And his mind was in peace. His soul was calm. Exhausted from the battle but it was overwhelmed with the feeling of... similar to being free.
A gentle hand caressed his cheek and he snapped out of his reverie. He looked up to find Reaper with worried expression.
"You okay?" The grim reaper asked.
"Yeah. Just... spaced out." Geno replied.
Reaper felt that Geno was being honest and let it go. He sat down next to Geno before handing him a warm glass of milk.
Geno gratefully took it and Reaper put his arm around Geno's shoulders and pulled him closer. Geno let him and leaned against Reaper.
'This is nice', Geno thought as he sipped the warm drink.
Very soon, Geno dozed off and almost drop the glass if not for Reaper. He plucked the glass from Geno's hands and placed it on the coffee table in front of the couch.
Reaper gathered Geno in his arms and carried him, careful as not to wake him up. He proceeded to the bedroom and gently laid Geno on the bed. He covered the sleeping skeleton with the thick blanket.
Just as then, he heard his phone ringing from downstairs. He briefly looked back at Geno to make sure he's comfortable before slipping out of the room.
He snapped his fingers and his phone appeared on his hand. He checked the caller's ID. It says 'Geno'.
For a second, he was utterly confused. But figured that Frisk had Geno's phone.
Geno had been worried about Frisk as well. Better answer it.
-Reaper, you f*cking son of a-
End call.
That... Was not Frisk. That was Classic Sans and he sounded furious.
He guessed that Frisk told Classic about the attack at the save screen. But Frisk didn't know it wasn't Reaper. And now Classic was mad at him and thinking that he hurt Geno or something.
Classic and Geno were really close and honestly, Reaper didn't like it. But he kept telling himself that they were just friends. Really close friends.
The phone rang again and the caller's ID says 'Geno'. Reaper got annoyed and turned it off. 'I don't want to deal with you right now', he thought.
He went to the kitchen and grab a can of beer from the fridge before carelessly throwing his phone on the counter.
He crashed on the couch and heaved tired sign. "So much have happened", he whispered to himself as he opened the can of beer.
Reaper took a sip and let the liquid burn his nonexistent throat.
He let his mind wander.
He still had to ask Alphys or Ink about the 'reborn rules' thing. If Geno really had become one of them.
It could probably wait until morning.
And- oh yeah, how come Geno was able to detect Chara's presence? She was supposed to be undetectable. Another thing to ask the goddess of knowledge.
Reaper signed and took another sip of his beer.
And what about damn traitor, Gaster. What the f*ck was he thinking? Stupid old man.
He wondered if Alphys knew about Gaster's intentions.
He signed again but more tired this time. He should really make a list of things to ask.
~~~
"DAMMIT!!"
Classic gripped the phone really tight. He had an urge to throw it against the wall but he had to hold himself back.
It's the only thing he can use to contact Reaper.
No one else but Geno had Reaper's number and Classic was glad they found Geno's phone in the save screen.
But he just can't take the pressure anymore. He threw the phone on the couch, just to be safe, and stormed off the house leaving a scared Frisk.
The kid immediately went to retrieve the phone as soon as the door slammed shut. She briefly inspect the phone for any damage and glad that she found none.
She proceeded to her little corner part of the living room and dialed Reaper's number herself. No answer.
She signed in defeat and waited for Reaper to at least text back.
Meanwhile, Classic was throwing a tantrum. In the Snowdin forest, there he was, attacking a poor tree mercilessly.
He was really frustrated and anxious and angry all at the same time. He needed to vent it out or else he'll explode.
He had been trying to contact Reaper all day. But nothing. A single call went through but was immediately ended.
One of his bone attack went through the tree and he stopped. He rubbed his face with his both hands and tried to calm himself.
If only he knew how to make a portal or at least teleport to another universe, he would've gotten to Geno a lot sooner. But no, he had to ask Alphys for help. But when he get there, it was empty.
Nothing but a fresh pool of blood on a patch of grass. But what gives him hope was that there's no dust. Which means Geno was alive but taken.
And he knew exactly who did it.
He had ask for Alphys' help once more and managed to open a portal to Reapertale. But for some reason, he can't get through. Like there was some invisible wall preventing him from going any further.
Alphys and Classic didn't know why they can't get through when the portal was clearly open. They tried everything until the machine that produces the portal exploded. Permanently damaging it.
It was really frustrating. It was right in front of him.
Then the next day, came a horrible morning. His soul was whole again. Complete. Which means only one thing:
Geno was dead.
Classic lost it. He won't accept it. He tried to tell himself, again and again, that it was just some bad dream. A nightmare. And he'll wake up anytime.
But he didn't.
It's the truth. No matter how much he denied it, it's the truth.
Classic was absolutely devastated. He didn't even know how he'll tell the kid. He'd known Geno for who knows how long. They grew closer as time passes by. The more he learns about Geno, the more concern he grew.
Until he had unknowingly fall for him.
But Classic didn't have the courage to tell his feelings. Afraid that he might get rejected. But now he regretted it. Because Geno was dead and he'll never have a chance to say it.
And it's all Reaper's fault.
~~~
Back in the throne room, Asgore, Gerson, and Undyine surrounded the mangled body of the child. Life and Alphys had left accompanied by Papyrus. They couldn't handle it anymore.
They look down at the bloody mess with disgust and pity.
Undyine grabbed the red soul floating over the body and put it in a jar.
They still couldn't believe what had just happened. Geno had managed to kill Chara all on his own. Without a single scratch.
Undyine had her one on one battle with Chara and certainly, the demonic kid was not weak.
Maybe it was her. Maybe she was too soft. She saw the battle. It was brutal. Both sides going for the kill.
Undyine clenched her fist and pursed her lips. She needs more training.
~~~
"Reaper!"
Said grim reaper was startled and spit his beer. He looked around and found Ink running towards him from an open portal.
Reaper had been silently thinking when Ink suddenly yelled. Scaring the crap out of him.
"Shh" Reaper made a 'be quiet' gesture. Placing his forefinger before his 'lips'. He didn't want Geno to wake up.
Ink instantly covered his mouth and briefly apologized which was nonchalantly accepted.
"What's up?" Reaper asked.
"Reaper, have you seen Geno? I can't find him anywhere." Ink began. His tone implies that he's worried and somewhat nervous. Or maybe he was tired.
Reaper narrowed his eye sockets at the mention of Geno's name. He felt his protective instinct taking over.
"Why are you looking for him?" The grim reaper asked. Obviously suspicious.
And Ink definitely noticed it. But he knew Reaper was just the jealous type. He also knew that Reaper was obsessed with Geno.
"Look, I mean no harm. I'm his friend and I'm just worried. I went to the save screen earlier but he wasn't there. Can you help me find him? You can detect dying souls, right?" Ink explained, his tone was soft but anxious.
Reaper relaxed and was convinced that Ink really was just worried for Geno. He could sense the creator's honesty. But... Well... he's always honest but... never mind.
Reaper signed before replying: "If that's the case, then you have nothing to worry about. He's with me. He's actually upstairs, sleeping."
Ink brightens up instantly and sprinted to the stairs. But Reaper teleported and blocked his path.
"I said he was sleeping." Reaper said, almost annoyed.
"But I wanna check on him." Ink whined.
"No." the grim reaper said coldly before leading Ink back in the living room and offered a seat on the couch.
Ink sat down grumpily while Reaper went to the kitchen to get some more drinks.
He came back with another can of beer for himself and a cup of tea for Ink. Knowing that the creator don't drink alcoholic beverages.
Ink silently accepted the tea and took a sip. He relaxed when the warm liquid soothes his throat.
"There's just too much that had happened today. Geno needs rest." Reaper explained without even looking at Ink.
Ink seemed to understand. He could wait until Geno woke up. But he need something to pass time.
"Can you tell me what happened?" Ink suggested.
Reaper gave the creator that says 'you're kidding me, right?'
"It's a long story." The grim reaper plainly replied.
Ink grinned widely. "We have all night."
Reaper gave up and began telling the story from the beginning.
~~~
A black figure dropped on the save screen floor from a portal above. The figure was seemingly a skeleton with glitches and error signs all over.
He looked around the dark abyss, looking for something. Or someone.
He summoned his strings and let it spread all over the endless black void. Just in case his prey was just hiding around the corner.
But he found none. It's empty.
He growled lowly in annoyance as he clenched his fist and gathered his strings.
He opened a portal and left.
To be continued...
