Chapter 4

As I had said before, the only benefits I had in this game was that I was rich. Any problems could be sorted out with money.

That's why very quickly, everything I had in mind was prepared.

"We'll start with the boys, they should be quick," I said to Sparrow as I walked through the garden, through the mahogany door separating this estate into two parts, the front and back. Boys usually stay in the front part of the esate while girls in the back.

I took in the courtyard I had revamped for the plan I had in mind. It was a large and spacious area with lodgings situated inside.

What I had in mind was very simple, that's all I could do at the moment. The grandchildren were what we could bet on, not the sons that were corrupted to its core. But first I had to understand what kind of talents they had.

Even though what the smart granddaughter said was true (she was Lily) that passing the imperial examination and becoming officials seemed to be our and my only route to raise splendor of our family, if the cadidate was foolish and corrupted like their parents, it would not help us one bit.

"Grandmother," the four grandsons greeted me.

"I had looked through your test results." I flipped through the papers in front of me.

I had paid huge amount for famous tutors around the capital to come up with a set of exam papers. Three subjects were included, literature (what was usually being tested in the Imperial Exam), business & mathematics and martial arts. Their results were a mess.

"I mean who would have thought fourteen years old Silver had similar test result as 10 years old Jade. I thought you have at least 4 years more of studying than Jade."

Silver's face turned bright red.

"But nevertheless, everyone has their own talents. I will just say this once." I stacked the horrendous test papers on the table. "I spent an extortionate amount of money to hire your tutors. You will have an exam every 3 months. I might adjust your lessons based on your test results. You will stay in this courtyard from now on. You will have lessons for 5 days followed by 2 rest days. You're free to leave this house during your rest days, but aside from those two days you have to stay here. That door will be locked aside from your rest days. You have your own kitchen and servants. You have your own schedule to follow.

I will support you till you're twenty. After that if the tutors said you showed potential in taking the Imperial Exam, I will continue to support you. If not, you choose your own path, either go join the army or I will give you an amount for you to start your own business. That's all the family will help you. Everyone has to work, if you do not work, you will not get your pocket money.

Of course, if you are determined to follow a certain route before twenty, you're free to notify me anytime. See that little box hanging on the door? You can write me letters telling me your aspirations or difficulties. Servants will check the box daily."

I gave them a nod and walked out of the courtyard. I motioned the servant guarding the courtyard to lock the door. I guessed that's when reality sank in, I could hear the boys pleading behind the locked door.

I said I had a plan, but training up talents take time and luck, that's why I could only resort to stupid method. And that's building my own school in my own estate.

Luckily, I had the money to hire the best tutors. It's just 5 days of school, they would not die. And they had their own personal servants and cook. As I had a heart of an angel, I even made sure their food was edible and full of nutrition.

They're going to have literature, mathematics, business, war tactics, horse riding and martial arts lessons. They're even allowed to have extra curricular activities such as music or drawing.

I was transported into a game and became a tiger mom.

I sighed as I walked back to the back part of the estate. Now, it's time for the girls.

----------------------

I had constructed the exact same school for the girls.

I had such a hard time finding female tutors in literature, mathematics and business. When I asked my third son for a list of good tutors in different categories, I only received a long list of male tutors. And as our family had literally no connections in the captial, finding talented female tutors became extremely hard.

In the end, I resorted to stupid method. I asked Sparrow to put up hiring notice in different kind of places, from the market to resturarnts. When they came for interview, they're required to finish a set of papers, just like the male tutors being hired. Of course the number female tutors coming for interview was significantly less than male tutors.

In the end I hired two widows. They're both born in scholarly families and they needed the money to raise their children. They both seemed to be extrememly grateful and said it's hard to find jobs these days as a widow. And that my job was their saving grace. As I said, this was not a gentle world to females. The girls' literature and mathematics syllabus were exactly the same as the boys.

Aside from literature and mathematics tutors, I also hired embroidery, drawing and music teachers. These were much easier to find. I just had to scout the top talents from various shops.

To be honest, another method to raise our own splendor was to marry daughters into prestigious families. In this way, we would gain more useful connections. Marriages were nothing but business in this world.

I felt like a cold hearted monster manipulating their marriages like a salesperson, but to return to my original world, to where my beloved parents, friends and toilet with plumbing were, I needed to do this.

All I could do was to try my best in finding husbands with good morals and equipped the girls with all the skills necessary to protect themselves. When they're married, I would make sure they had a dowry they could live on by themselves, but they needed to first learn how to invest and manage their own dowry. They need to distinguish between scams and truths, when to trust and when not to.

I had also arranged herbs lessons, fashion and exercise lessons in their schedule. They need exercises to build stronger bodies, the people in this world was way too fragile even a simple cold could take their lives.

--------------------------------

"My poor son, look how much weight he has lost!" the wife of my second son cried in distress while hugging his son, Silver.

"Mother, I don't want to study anymore," Gold, the eight years old son of my first son, sobbed.

"Poor boy, poor boy, you don't have to study. We have gold for you to last a life time," Gold's mother cooed.

I placed my tea cup on the table. A large clang echoed through the room.

"Silver and Gold, you two don't want to study?" I asked with a gentle smile.

Silver trembled and hesistated while Gold shouted, "Yes! Grandma, I don't want to study anymore!"

"No problem," I nodded graciously. "Sparrow."

This was the first rest day after the five days of lessons. As I had expected, losers came crying with their mothers.

Sparrow returned with a wooden chest. She handed me the chest. I opened it with the key around my neck.

"Silver and Gold come." I waved them forward and took out a bank note from the wooden chest. It's a note of 500 gold.

"As I have said on the first day, I will support all your studying expenses till you're eighteen. If you want to quit earlier or want to do business, I would give you your share of money. Here's yours. Take it." I offered them.

The eyes of the two wives widened.

"Say thank you to grandma, Gold." Then she attempted to take the bank note from me.

"But, as I have said, we no longer give pocket money to those who don't work or study. So you will not receive a single dime from me anymore. You're also not allowed to live here, unless you make your fortune."

"What?" mother of Gold shrieked as she released her fingers. "Mother, I haven't heard of it before."

"I have told Silver and Gold, haven't I. Silver?"

"I... I... Have a nice day, grandma." He bowed and walked away.

"From this day onwards, each and every one of your pocket money per month will be 2 gold. You're all dismissed. It's time for my nap."
