Chapter 4: Extracting a Change of Heart

Draco stood stiff in the corner of his kitchen as he watched his father and Androginious pour the Spawning potion into small viles that were lined up on the kitchen table. His eyes flicked to Theo, sitting cross legged on the counter, brown hair falling into his eyes.

He needs a haircut thought Draco. Maybe Daphne was still around, she had always been good at cutting their hair in school.

"All we need are the lids and we should be set." Androginious said, reaching for the pile of lids that were littered on the counter beside his son. "Theo, put them on."

Theo stood up began twisting a cap onto each vile, holding his breath in concentration. Draco had a sudden thought of Potions class, how expertly Theo would focus on measuring his ingredients before using them. Waste not want not, he used to say, and had always kept his Potions space tidy.

"Now Draco, we have a new visitor coming to our home interested in purchasing a Spawning. I want you to keep our more..." Lucious paused, looking for a word as his voice jolted Draco back to the present. "permanent guests, quiet downstairs."

Draco felt his blood run cold at the thought of spending a few hours with Maisie, Penelope and whomever else had been unfortunate enough to get captured these past few months. A crash sounded and Draco spun to find a broken vile of Spawning on the floor, the dark brown liquid oozing over the tile. Before anyone could speak, Theo was flung onto the floor, a smack echoing from his cheek as his father's hand met his face.

"Fucking moron!" Androginious roared and walked over to his son. Theo sat up holding his face, and was met with another slap, returning to the floor. Draco winced, but didn't look away. He couldn't help his friend, but he could watch. It was the least he could do. Androginious grabbed Theo by the shirt and wrenched him up to his feet.

"Do you know how much you just cost me?" he screamed, gripping Theos shirt and crushing the broken vile beneath his feet. "How much did he cost me, Lucius?" Draco looked at his father who had not reacted and put his hands behind his back as he picked at his fingernail.

"Well, he cost you about 3,000 galleons." Lucius replied coolly and cocked an eyebrow. "He cost me about 7,000."

"You plan on paying kind Mr. Malfoy back?" Androginious snarled, finally releasing Theos collar. Theos face was red, and Draco saw his hand shaking slightly as he put his arms down from his face.

"I'm sorry Mr. Malfoy." He replied, voice strong. "I can pay you back."

Lucius waved his hand carelessly and turned his gaze towards the viles. "How about we just say, you owe me one." He said, the hint of a grin on his face, and Theo nodded apologetically. "Now as I was saying," Lucius turned his attention once more to Draco. "You will accompany Andriginious in the basement and help him obtain more Draught of Pain. Miss Cho Chang has graced us with her presence and we'll need to start.... extraction, as soon as possible." As Lucius talked, Theo held his face and stalked out of the kitchen, the mahogany doors swinging shut behind him.

Draco felt his stomach flip at the thought of participating in an extraction, especially with Androginious. While he had never really seen it often, he knew Theos father was a cruel man. He wasn't entirely sure Theos mother had died of 'natural causes'.

Turning his attention back to his father, Draco straightened his shoulders. "Of course." He said, feeling sick in the pit of his stomach. "Anything for the cleaning cause."

The Cleaning Cause as Rita Skeeter had coined it, was the act of removing all muggleborn and most half-bloods from society, to purify the bloodlines and to stop the mixing of 'dirty blood'. After Voldemort's rise to power and the death of Harry Potter, muggleborns began being imprisoned. That is, until the Spawning came to life; then, muggleborns started to mysteriously 'go missing', and since they were really on no one's caring list, barely anyone reported their muggleborn family members missing. Muggle-sympathizers were arrested, and even some 'disappeared' just as mysteriously as their muggle friends.

Draco was not a muggleborn-sympathizer. He was a pure blood through and through. One day he would probably marry Daphne Greengrass or Pansy if Theo didn't marry her first and have lots of pure blood children that would carry on the Malfoy name. He did not like to often think of his future children. The pressure he felt from being a Malfoy was extensive. He did not know if he could pass it onto another, watch it eat away at another and twist whatever potential that child had into something cruel.

At night, right before sleep would take him, he could admit to himself he no longer shared his families views on blood purity. It was a dangerous notion, to go against the history of the Malfoy way, but he felt it all the same.

-

It was nearly dusk when a light knock came from the door, and Draco greeted a wiry woman standing in his doorway.

"You must be a guest of my fathers." Draco said, keeping his shoulders square as he gestured her inside. She was thin, with large green eyes and a gaunt face, her brown hair tied into several knots atop her head.

"Yes dear," she sniffed, walking into the manor and peering around. "and you must be Draco. Miles told me so much about you." Draco nodded, trying to remember who Miles was, as Lucius walked into the foyer, followed closely by Androginious.

"Ah, Madam Bletchley. Wonderful to see you again." Lucius cooed and kissed both of her cheeks as she did the same. "Feeling a bit down, no?" A light went off in Draco's head as he finally pinned who she was; she must've been the mother of Miles Bletchley, one of Draco's classmates and teammates as well. He racked his brain, trying to remember the last time he'd seen Miles and yet he could not. Did he die during the battle of Hogwarts? Miles also had a brother, Kevin, if Draco's memory served him right. He could not remember the last time he'd seen either of them.

"Well, Lucius, when you have a family as ridiculous as mine, your appearance needs extra help." She fussed, bringing her hands to her cheeks, massaging them slightly.

"Trouble in paradise?" Lucius asked, leading her towards the kitchen. Androginious stalked towards the basement, and grabbed Draco's arm as he went, pulling the younger boy with him. Draco took a few gulps apprehensively as he was pulled to the basement door, watching Androginious open it.

"Ladies first." He sneered, showing his stained teeth. Raising his chin Draco stepped down the old stairs, his heart hammering in his chest, and braced himself for what he would find.

The basement, or more accurately titled the dungeon, was divided into two cells; muggleborns in one, half-bloods and muggle-sympathizers in the other. Draco peered into the two cells. In one cell sat Maisie, her brown hair tangled and dirty, her feet bare, and next to her slumped Penelope Clearwater. Penelope's eyes were shut, her arms baring dozens of deep lashes, some covered in bandages and a few still dripping scarlet blood. Her left eye was purple, her thin lips chapped. Maisie was trying to dab at a wound, but seemed to be doing so in a haze. She was probably delirious from hunger, and Draco averted catching her eye. In the second cell, Cho Chang change lay on the floor, her shirt torn down the middle so that her aqua bra could be clearly seen. Kneeling beside her was Molly Weasley, holding a cloth to Cho's forehead, murmuring softly. She looked up as Draco stepped closer, and she pressed her lips together.

"What?" she barked, any sign of the soft tubby mother-of-six gone from her face. Androginous stepped forward, holding a set of keys on a ring, sliding the key into a lock on the door and opened it. Molly inched closer to Cho, tightening her grip on the girl and Draco dejectedly sighed at her measly efforts. Without a word, Androginous shoved Molly right in the chest, and she fell onto her back side with a huff. Cho's eyes fluttered at the commotion, and she screamed when Androginious grabbed her by the arm, hauling her up to her feet. She pulled and scratched, hitting him with her fists.

"That's enough, girl!" Androginious hollered, then turned to Draco saying, "By the end of the cell there's a side table, bring it here." Draco mechanically walked to the end of the room and saw the table. It was small and brown, with a hole in the center and a bucket beneath said hole. He gulped.

He did not want to be here.

He missed his mother.

He grabbed the table and bucket, nearly retching as he spotted the dried blood at the bottom. He hauled it to where Androginous and Cho stood, then backed away a few steps. Cho was still struggling, twisting her arm and bracing her feet.

"I said, enough." Androginous yelled, dropping Cho's arm and grabbing her back the back of the hair. She yelled  as he bashed her face into the cell wall. Draco's chest constricted, and somewhere behind him one of the girls screamed. A sickening crunch was heard from the cell, and as Androginous pulled her back, it was clear to see Cho's nose was broken. Blood streamed from the middle of her face and she was slack against the table.

"Hold her up." Androginous commanded. Draco immediately stood beside Cho and held her next to the table, sinking to his knees next to her as Androginous took her right arm, and held it above the hole. He removed a large cutting knife from his coat, holding the tip of the blade to her arm.

"She may be a half blood but it's better than no blood at all." Androginous stated.

As Cho started to scream, Draco shut his eyes.
