Chapter 47 - Rematch Sabotage
Quidditch rematch between Gryffindors and Ravenclaw arrived sooner than they were ready. All the confidence they had built up for the first time seemed to have evaporated from all except Ron who seemed to be too distracted to be nervous.
Ron had never spent a minute alone since the meeting with the DA. It was always Harry and Hermione or Neville and other DA members who gave him company especially with Terrence in close proximity as though they expect him to pounce and attack Ron.
"Where are you going? We are supposed to meet the team at the pitch." Hermione asked Ron as he got up from the Gryffindor table during the breakfast before the match.
"Restroom. You go ahead, mate, I'll meet you at the changing rooms. The Captain can't be late after all!" Ron said slapping Harry on the back.
Hermione looked at him in worry but to her relief, Neville who had been sitting with them jumped to his feet immediately and said "I think I'll go with you."
Ron nodded. He didn't seem to mind the company, in fact he seemed to be enjoying the attention. For the first time he didn't even seem too nervous about the match. Harry believed this was because he is never left alone with his thoughts long enough to fill his head with doubts.
"He'll be ok." Hermione said watching Harry's expression. "I'm sure he will be great today."
"It's not the match I'm worried about." Harry said, leaning forward towards Hermione. "It's Ron. What if something happens to him at the match again?"
"Just focus on finishing the match early. Soon Ron will be safe at the ministry and nobody can get him there!" Hermione said putting down her spoon.
There was a small commotion behind Harry where a Ravenclaw girl with dark curly hair tipped her goblet of pumpkin juice and it spilled everywhere causing everyone around her to grab their books and move away before it got wet.
"All the best, I'll see you after the match." Hermione said before jumping out of her seat and scurrying out of the great hall.
It felt like the coldest November yet but the Gryffindors fought against the cold air when they practiced for the rematch against Ravenclaw.
"We are in the lead by 40 points. You all played well last match. Keep it up and get us another 40 points then I will catch the snitch and finish the game." Harry said to the team before they started the match.
As they waited for Madam Hootch to call them, Ron arrived unsurprisingly accompanied by Hermione. They had been inseparable since Harry and Ron decided to leave Hogwarts and join the Ministry. It was only because of Hermione that they decided to stay at Hogwarts until Kingsley confirmed their position at the Auror department.
In the last owl Kingsley had sent, nearly a fortnight ago, he said,
".......Usually the training of new Aurors begins by the end of the school year but since the circumstances stances around you and Ron are different I would like to place you directly under the guidance of Hestia Jones. She is currently off on an assignment and is expected to return in a few weeks........."
Although she didn't like being left behind, Hermione was thrilled to have a few more weeks with Ron and decided to make the best of it.
"Good luck!" She said. She had her wand out and was scanning Harry and Ron with it.
"What in Merlins name are you doing?" Ron asked.
"It's a spell detector. I'm just making sure that none of you have any traces of magic on you." Hermione replied. "Even Salem magic." She added in a low voice.
"You think someone tried to sabotage the game last time?" Harry asked.
"I don't know, Harry but McGonagal said it herself. We have played in worse weather conditions, and no matter how bad the weather conditions were, I haven't seen any player should shoot straight to the ground and hurt themselves." Hermione said as she scanned the other players.
"She has a point, none of the Ravenclaws were affected by the rain either." Ron added now looking worried.
"Everything seems ok. I have got the DA keeping an eye out for anyone muttering curses it jinxes. There is no way they will dare try anything today." Hermione said confidently.
"Gryffindors, onto to the pitch, Now!" Madam Hootch called through the door and everyone nervously shuffled out.
With a peck on Ron's cheek, Hermione returned to the stands next to Neville. Her eyes however scanned the crowd looking for any strange behaviour.
On the pitch, Harry shook hands with the Ravenclaw captain again and then the quaffle was released.
Inspite of the cold winds, there wasn't any rain and the Gryffindors seemed to be playing incredibly well too.
Within the first hour, Gryffindor managed to score the 40 points they needed to win the cup. Now all they needed was Harry to catch the snitch and end the game.
It was a great match, Ron was blocking goals and stopping the quaffle left and right. The commentator was happily shouting out the scores and the crowd cheered as Ron blocked another goal.
Suddenly Harry noticed a gold spark from near the Group of Gryffindors. He shot towards it immediately but it vanished. Confused, Harry began to circle the pitch looking for the snitch. The Ravenclaw seeker was tailing him, keeping a close eye on Harry.
Suddenly from across the pitch, Harry noticed the gold spark again. Without hesitation, Harry shot straight at it, determined to catch it this time. The crowd began shouting and yelling. It was not the usual cheer he heard when he was about to catch the snitch. This was very confusing as half the crowd was cheering while the other half was yelling and pointing at something behind Harry. He also realised that the Ravenclaw seeker didn't join him on his chase.
Harry spun around to see what they were pointing at and then his stomach dropped. The Ravenclaw seeker had his arm outstretched as he zoomed forward, inches away from the snitch.
Confused at how the snitch ended up on the opposite side of the pitch, Harry shot towards the Ravenclaw seeker at full speed. The cold air hit his face hard but he did not care and threw all his weight forward on his firebolt praying he would be able to catch up with the other seeker.
Suddenly a bluger flew passed Harry and went straight to the Ravenclaw seeker, narrowly missing him but it hit the tail of his broom causing him to veer off course. Harry immediately lurched forward, his arm outstretched and his fingers closed around the snitch,
"Yes!"
The crowd on the stands erupted into cheers. Harry turned to find the savour of this match and saw the fifth year Gryffindor beater, Darren, cheering at Harry along with everyone else.
"Brilliant catch, mate, was sorta worried about you at first!" Ron yelled in Harry's ear as the team landed on the pitch. Harry didn't understand what he meant by that but the cheers were so loud that they couldn't hear each other talk as they hugged and cheered.
Harry spotted McGonagal in the stands, furiously yelling at Carter with Hermione standing close, her arms crossed. She looked angry too.
The loud celebration had continued till they were back at the Gryffindor tower. They showed no signs of stopping to celebrate the spectacular match.
The only one not happy was Carter, who was red with fury after being yelled at. Hermione said she had caught him tricking Harry by creating an illusion of a snitch far from wherever he was. McGonagal was furious and gave him detention for a month and banned him from ever playing Quidditch at Hogwarts. Harry had a few choice words for him for when he got back to the common room but by then Neville said that Carter had shut himself away in his dormitory.
"I think he tried to sabotage the previous game too, but I have no proof of that yet." Hermione said.
Harry saw Terrence along with a bunch of first years, talking to Darren excitedly about the match. He seemed to be having a good time. For once nobody had to keep an eye on him since he was everywhere, chatting about the match in excitement and playing a loud game of exploding snap with his fellow first years. Harry was deeply surprised by this change in personality.
Someone had managed to sneak a lot of food from the kitchens to celebrate. Plates of chips and dips, some treats like chocolates and jelly. There were also refreshments like pumpkin juice in cups which would refill itself.
Some of the Gryffindors even brought out some of their Weasley's Wizards wheezes products to add to the commotion. Little fireworks, exploding snap, prank treats were everywhere.
Ron and Hermione soon ended up on the seat by the window as they snogged each other. Harry and Darren were the heroes of the match and went hoarse talking about the game till 3 in the morning. Inspite of everything they didn't stop celebrating until McGonagal busted in her dressing gown to tell them off for all the noise.
When they did go to bed, Harry's head was still buzzing in excitement. He knew he was going to miss this. This was his last game at Hogwarts.
