Chapter 42 - Secrets In The Forest

Gryffindor suddenly found itself in the lead by 30 points. This was a dramatic change since they were tied at zero points with Ravenclaw.

The crowd was cheering but Harry didn't feel too happy. Although it's the chasers job to score, Carter has been the only one to score since he arrived. The commentator was quick to notice this and remarked that Carter was the reason Gryffindor was in the lead.

Out of nowhere Harry felt something hard slam onto his back. It felt like a bludger but did not knock him off his broom.

Harry was so distracted by this that he didn't notice the snitch and the Ravenclaw seeker began to chase it. Panicking, Harry zoomed towards the other seeker, desperate not to let the team down. Thankfully through the thick rains, they both lost the snitch. Durning this time Gryffindor scored twice.

They were now 50 points in the lead. 30 more and it would be safe to catch the snitch or else the next match would be difficult.

"GRYFFINDOR KEEPER SIMPLY LET THE QUAFFLE IN, 10 POINTS TO RAVENCLAW." The commentator roared. Harry sped to the goalposts in horror to see Ron hunched near the left goal, leaving the other two unprotected.

Harry grabbed Ron's limp body and with the help of other chasers they set him on the ground. Madam Hootch whistled to stop the game and came running onto the pitch to see what was wrong.

"Gryffindor players are mysteriously getting sick or injured." The commentator said in a fake hushed tone for dramatic effect as the crowd leaned in to see what was happening on the pitch.

"Is he ok?" Harry asked Madam Hootch desperately. She didn't respond immediately but tried a few spells to wake him up. Ron stirred but his eyes remained shut.

"He needs to go to the hospital wing." Came a voice from behind. It was Hermione rushing towards them, she looked disheveled and soaked in the rain and mud but she didn't take her eyes off Ron.

Conjuring another stretcher, Madam Hootch and Hermione escorted Ron off the pitch. Hermione held up her wand to create a transparent umbrella to stop the rain falling on Ron anymore looking at him with a worried expression.

"I think it's best we continue the game when the weather clears up. Although I have seen matches play under worse conditions, I cannot put my students at risk." McGonagal said to the players on the pitch. With that Harry grabbed his and Ron's broom and rushed to the hospital wing.

"Harry!" Came a voice from behind. It was Neville, jogging to keep up with Harry. He was still dripping from the rain and was covered in mud. "Is Ron ok?"

"Donno." Harry replied "I'm going to the hospital wing to see him now."

"What happened to you?" Harry asked, eyeing Neville from head to toe.

"Hermione didn't tell you?" Neville asked looking surprised.

"We didn't have time to talk." Harry said picking up his pace.

"We weren't at the game. Hermione and I followed Terrence into the forbidden forest." Neville said.

"What?!" Harry said stopping in his tracks.

"There were death eaters within Hogwarts grounds. I saw them with my own eyes." Neville said.

"What did they do?" Harry asked.

"Nothing. They spoke for a while before they disapparated." Neville said.

"That's it?" Harry said frowning. "They didn't do anything?" Neville shook his head.

They entered the Hospital wing to find Madam Pomfrey fussing over Ron who was awake and looked better than ever. Hermione was sitting quietly next to him as Madam Pomfrey gave him some more chocolate.

Across Ron's bed was another quidditch player who's head was heavily bandaged and was sleeping alone. It was the chaser who went crashing onto the pitch.

"How are you mate?" Harry asked. Ron looked at Harry dully and said "I'm fine! Better than ever."

Harry glanced at Hermione who sat expressionless beside Ron's bed.

"Do you know what happened to you?" Harry asked concerned.

"Madam Pomfrey thinks it's because of the rain. Soaked in the rain for a long time and lack of food for breakfast made me pass out." Ron said "but if anyone asks I got stuck by lightning."

"Everyone would have noticed a bolt of lightning hitting a player Ron!" Hermione told him coldly.

"What happened to you?" Harry asked Hermione who was now dry but there were a few cuts and scraps on her arms. "Nothing" Hermione said rolling down her muddy sleeves to cover the cuts. "I think I'll go take a shower now." She got up and walked out of the hospital wing.

"She is cranky." Ron muttered. "You should have seen her face when I woke up. Like she thought I was dead or something."

"She did." Neville said, Harry had almost forgotten that Neville walked with him to the hospital wing. He had stood quietly behind Harry till then. "I think she blames herself for whatever happened to you."

"How did she come up with that?" Ron asked frowning. Neville didn't seem to want to answer but realising he didn't have an option he lowered his voice and began to talk.

"Hermione and I weren't at the match today. Infact we only reached in time to see Harry bring you down to the pitch."

Harry and Ron exchanged confused looks. "How could it be her fault then?" Ron asked, but Harry had another pressing question he needed to ask. "Where did you go if you weren't at the match?"

"We were following Malfoy." Neville said. "The DA split up to keep an eye on everyone in your list. Hermione caught me following Malfoy so she came along too."

"What did you find out?" Harry asked and Neville began his tale.

****Flashback****

Hermione kissed Ron for good luck before they went into the changing rooms. Feeling uneasy about the weather conditions she went to the stands and found a seat next to Neville.

"Hello Hermione!" Hagrid boomed when he saw her. "Haven't come for a visit in a long time." Hermione gave him a apologetic smile. "Sorry Hagrid, ever since we got back we have been sticking to curfew."

Hagrid chuckled but didn't say anything. He probably found it funny that Harry, Ron and Hermione actually cared about curfew.

As the teams walked into the pitch, Hermione fixed her binoculars straight at Harry and Ron, until something flashing Green and Silver caught her eye. Moving up to the stands on the opposite side she noticed a green robed boy with slick blond hair, make his way from the sea of Slytherins, through the crowd of Hufflepuff and then out of the Quidditch pitch.

Hermione bit her lip and glanced at Neville who also seemed distracted. He was looking at something a few rows in front of them, his eyes moving in seriousness.

"He is on the move, Dean!" Neville hissed at Dean who didn't pay him any attention. He was busy jumping up and down cheering for Gryffindor.

"What is it Neville?" Hermione asked. "Terrence. Look, he is leaving and the match only begun." Neville replied. "The DA has been keeping an eye on everyone you mentioned."

Hermione looked at the distracted Dean and then at the last place she had seen Malfoy before turning back to Neville and said "I'll go find out what he is up to." Neville got to his feet as soon as she did. "I'm not letting you go alone." He said firmly and Hermione didn't argue. They hurried out of there, ignoring Hagrid who called out "Were are yeh goin?"

Hermione and Neville rushed to the exit where the found Malfoy standing in silence looking down the path back to Hogwarts.

"Malfoy is spying on Terrence?" Neville said looking confused. Hermione didn't answer, she and Neville pressed themselves against the wall and waited for Mafoy to move. Sure enough, while maintaining a distance between himself and Terrence, Malfoy began to follow him as Hermione and Neville followed him.

"Looks like they are going back to the castle." Neville said as they continued to walk and the sounds from the Quidditch pitch grew quieter from distance. But Neville was wrong.

Malfoy was headed to the other end of the grounds. They crossed Hagrid's hut and straight into the forest.

The rain fell harder and Hermione wished she brought an extra coat. "I can't see Malfoy anymore." Neville said trying to catch up with Hermione. He was right, they had lost him. Inspite of using water repellent charms to help them see better in their rain, it was too late.

"If we don't find him soon, I promise we will turn around and head back to the pitch." Hermione said peering through the heavy rains from behind trees. Suddenly she gasped out loud and stopped dead in her tracks.

Hermione found herself face to face in front of Terrence. Not far behind him stood a group of masked deatheaters all staring at her. Jumping back with a gasp, Hermione tripped over a root of a tree and fell crashing to the ground letting out a small scream.

"Spying on me?" Terrence asked looking down at her with his fists clenched at his side close to his wand, his eyes flashing.

*******

What was Terrence doing in the rain?
Where did Malfoy disappear to? Or was this a trap?
