Chapter 34 - The Diversion

Hermione did not turn back as she slipped into the old house. She was determined to find Harry and Ron and get them out alive.

The house was old and every step she took made a squeaky sound on the dusty wooden floor.

"Whose there?" Came a voice from the room on her left. It was Nox, a Slytherin she recognised. He stepped out of the room to see who made the noise.

Hermione held her breath and stood still as his eyes scanned the passage. Finally deciding he imagined the sound, Nox turned and went back into the room and continued to pace in front of the fireplace.

Hermione sighed in relief and carefully tiptoed up the stairs. What she saw upstairs made her hand slip off the railing, nearly falling down the stairs, not noticing that her hand tugged the cloak which uncovered one of her shoes.

Too distracted to notice her exposed foot, Hermione stared open mouthed at the only person she recognised in the hallway.

It was Malfoy, dressed like a deatheater. He was talking to some other death eaters, he seemed to be arguing with them about something.

"I never changed!" Malfoy said to them firmly as one of the other deatheaters shook his head in disbelief.

"Yet you turn up when it's most convenient for you." Spat a white haired deatheater.

Hermione could not believe her eyes. Malfoy was with her outside only a few minutes ago! How did he get into the house?

"You need me. Only I can deliver what you cannot." Malfoy said. His face was deathly calm and his voice showed no hint of fear.

Hermione felt a chill run down her spine but she ignored it and scanned the room for a way to get past them unnoticed. She spotted a curly dark haired witch hiding behind a book shelf, stare at her direction.

Stunned, Hermione followed her gaze and with a jump, realised that one of her shoes was not hidden by the invisibility cloak.

Quickly covering herself up Hermione took a few steps down, fixing her eyes on the new stranger.

The curly haired witch seemed to be eves dropping on the death eaters, but the moment she spotted Hermione's shoes her attention shifted.

She put her hands together like she was praying while mumbling something and then pulled apart her hands. The corner of her lips twisted into a small smile.

Nothing happened.

She then stepped out from behind the bookshelf casually suddenly not worried about being seen and made her way to the staircase, her eyes fixed in Hermione's direction.

"Where are you going June?" asked the white haired deatheater.

"For a walk." The curly haired witch said turning around and flipping her dark hair with attitude. She had an American accent. "How did you know it was me?"

"I always know when it's you." The white haired deatheater said with a smile and June blushed.

"The Master said we were not to go out until he says so." A bald deatheater said sternly. June's expression changed to irritation.

"I can walk indoors, Wix" she said rolling her eyes as she turned to refocus her attention at Hermione's direction.

She made her way down the steps, one hand gently on the railing and the other hand touching the wall preventing anything from getting upstairs without bumping into her.

Hermione was breathing carefully, trying not to make any noise as she walked backwards down the stairs. She wondered if June could see through invisibility cloaks as she came closer.

When Hermione's feet touched the last step she realised she couldn't move back anymore. She felt stuck to an invisible surface like the spider's prey on a web.

June stopped in front of her, stretched her hand and pulled off the cloak.

"Aha! I knew you would come." She said triumphantly.

"Shh!!" Hermione said desperately, eyes darting to the upstairs landing to see if anyone heard. "Please, I'm just here to -"

"-Rescue Ronald Weasley. Yes I know who you are and why you are here." June said, her voice cold.

Hermione did not respond. She really hoped she got to see Ron before had she got caught.

"If I can spot you so easily, you think you can get past the Master?" June asked with a small laugh. Hermione swallowed, what was she going to do now? Maybe she should have waiting for the ministry after all!

"Your friend was just telling the boys upstairs about an invisible intruder." June told Hermione.

"Isn't that your ruse? To get the master out of the room so you can get Harry Potter and Ronald Weasley to safety?" She asked raising her eyebrows questioningly.

"Lame!" She snorted when Hermione did not answer.

"The master is not so easily fooled." She said. She took a step back and eyed Hermione head to toe.

"You look exactly like the pictures in the paper." June continued before Hermione could talk. "Unimpressive."

"Who are you?" Hermione whispered.

"June." June said "no last name. We are Salem descendants adopted by Mr Flamel who we call Master."

"Adopted yet you call him master?" Hermione asked before she could stop herself.

June's face turned red. "What is family if they abandon you? What we have is more than just a family, we have loyalty." June said frowning at Hermione.

"What do you want with Harry and Ron?" Hermione asked.

"Nothing." June replied "but my master needs them for something. Who knew that taking the war hero would be so easy? I am so disappointed."

"How did you get into Hogwarts?" Hermione asked her.

"Same way you did. I took the train." June said casually.

"You were a student?" Hermione gasped. "So you and the rest of the Slytherins did this together!"

"Me? A Slytherin? Ha! For whatever brief time I went to Hogwarts, I was a Ravenclaw!" June said proudly.

Ravenclaw! Hermione thought mentally kicking herself for not waiting for Luna to check the Ravenclaw tower.

She opened her mouth to say something when they heard something move in the passage behind them.

Hermione and June froze, both staring into the dark corridor to see what moved.

Then it happened again. This time they saw it. The heavy glass cupboard full of ancient artifacts moved an inch forward.

"What was that?" Hermione gasped.

"Is that you down there June?" Someone called from upstairs.

"Quick! Get under the cloak." June told Hermione, shoving the cloak back into Hermione's hands.

Hermione did not need telling twice, she swung the cloak over her shoulders and vanished from site. June grabbed Hermione's arm and they hid behind the cupboard under the staircase.

"Why are you helping me? I thought you were one of them!" Hermione asked confused.

"I am!" June snapped. "I did what they asked me to do too, I helped bring him Harry and Ron. But now I want them freed."

"Why?" Hermione asked as June turned away from her and peered out of the cupboard under the stairs.

The cupboard in the passage moved again, this time it seemed to have lost its balance and tipped forward, crashing into the ground. The glass shattered and the artifacts fell to the ground.

June and Hermione gasped but remained very still under the staircase.

The noise of the cupboard crashing made all the death eaters upstairs come rushing down and Nox, who was pacing the room with the fireplace came out too see what was happening.

They all stared at the mess for a moment. It was Malfoy who broke the silence.

"She is here." He said. Everyone stared at him.

"Even if that mudblood is here, she will never get past the Master." Wix, the bald Wizard said.

"She is probably trying to cause a diversion." Malfoy said looking around as though trying to find the slightest movement.

Suddenly there was a sound of something crashing in the next room.

"What do we do?" Wix asked "The Master wanted her alive too!"

"First things first, you go and warn the master about our intruder. Meanwhile the rest of us search the house for the mudblood." Malfoy said.

"I don't take orders from you." Wix spat.

"Let's take him to The Master first and see what he has to say." The white haired wizard told Wix who finally nodded in agreement.

"Ok so listen to my plan. You cannot go out of this house as easily as you got in. Now that they know that the house has been discovered they will lock it down tight." June told the invisible Hermione who was still in shock.

"I will stay down here and continue to cause a disturbance until the Master leaves the room. Then comes your chance...."

"How can I trust you?" Hermione asked after June told her the plan.

"If they catch me helping you, they will kill me without hesitation. If you don't trust me, then good luck getting out of here alive." June said pushing open the door to let Hermione out.

Hermione hesitated and then said.

"Stay safe, I hope to see you again. We have a lot to talk about." Hermione said before slipping out.

Not worried about being heard anymore, Hermione rushed upstairs. She did not need to search the rooms before the door at the end opened and the deatheaters poured out. Before the door shut again she had a glimpse of the back of Malfoy's head.

Hermione quickly threw herself behind the bookshelf she saw June hiding behind as the death eaters passed her to search every room in the house.

Hermione stood very still, unable to move because Wix stood next to her, his foot on the end of her cloak.

She checked to make sure she was still covered and waited till wix unlocked the room next to her and went in. He had is hand up as though he was going to grab something.

Just as Hermione turned to find Harry and Ron she saw the door at the end of the corridor open again. Malfoy came out followed by Nicholas Flamel.

Hermione had to throw her hands over her mouth to stop herself from gasping out loud at the site of the great wizard. Ever picture of Nicholas Flamel showed a fairly old Wizard with a long white beard but this Wizard was horribly disfigured.

She watched as he took Malfoy to another room, two deatheaters stood guard outside both rooms.

Another crash downstairs brought Hermione back to earth. Not wasting anymore time she pulled out her wand and confounded both the guards and busted into the room.

Harry and Ron stood in the middle of the room, wands in heir hands. They were trying to apparait.

She ran straight to them and threw her arms around them sobbing.

"Hermione?" Ron whispered. But before anyone else could say anything deatheaters ran in and surrounded them.

"You think you can just walk in here and take them?" Flamel said as he joined the deatheaters from behind.

Harry Ron and Hermione held up their wands but they were surrounded. They couldn't fight them all!

Hermione looked at Ron again. He looked tortured and weak. She held him tight with her free hand.

"I love you" she whispered.
