Chapter five Paint and family
Perry sat on her bed doing her homework. She was worried about her cousin, Emma had been quiet since telling their friends about her parents. She knew it wasn't so much that she missed them, she hadn't really gotten the chance to know them. It was more missing something you felt you'd been cheated out of. Perry understood to some extent she'd been cheated out of her aunt and uncle but she knew it wasn't the same. She couldn't imagine the pain of not knowing your parents. Sometimes she wondered what if the killer had gone to her home instead of Emma's. What if instead of killing her aunt Madison and uncle Bill he'd come for her own parents. At the time they had lived next door, Perry's dad, Michael, had actually been the one to find the bodies igniting the search for Emma. Her dad had been the number one suspect at first for no other reason than he had found them. He had been banned from the crime scene but kept coming back desperately hoping for news of his niece. Perry knew he still struggled with the loss of his sister. She noticed him watching Emma sometimes with a far off look. Sometimes he would quickly turn away but Perry had seen the tears in his eyes. Emma was the closest thing Perry had to a sibling and she couldn't imagine the pain she'd feel if she lost her. Perry threw her pencil at the wall in frustration she couldn't do homework like this shed reread the same sentence ten times already. She got up and headed to the kitchen for a drink.
Perry found her mom, Rose, in the kitchen baking. She hopped up on the barstool and spun it around in a circle. "Whatcha makin mum?"
"Cookies, I thought they'd be good you know for your dad and Emmy...", Rose trailed off today was the anniversary of their deaths, October 11th, seventeen years ago today everything had changed for their families.
"When will dad be home?"
"I'm not sure, he usually stops by the old place today." Rose smiled sadly at her daughter as she reached out and brushed her hair back. "I would never ever have wished for that to happen, but we've been so blessed to have you two."
Perry smiled at her mother. And reached for a cookie. Rose chuckled and swatted at her hand before handing over two cookies. "Make sure one of those makes it to Emma." she said shaking her head and laughing at her daughter.
"Course mom!", Perry smiled as she dashed out of the kitchen. She found her cousin on the stairs smiling slightly and teary eyed. "You hear all that?" Perry asked softly.
Emma nodded and sniffled. "Yeah..."
"She means it you know you're just as important here as me. We love you Em."
"I know", Emma nodded, "I love you too always and forever." she smiled a little bigger, "you gonna hand over my cookie now?"
Perry grinned and sniffed both cookies. "Oh I dunno they smell so good.."
Both girls adopted the same serious expression and narrowed eyes as they sized each other up. Perry shifted on her toes and dashed towards the door Emma following close behind. Perry through the door open and dashed to the left Emma flew through the door straight into a firm chest. Arms swiftly wrapped around her steadying her.
"Hey easy there tiger!"
Emma lifted her head and found herself face to face with her new blonde friend. "He hey Draco, Whatcha doin here?"
Draco slowly let her go and took a step backwards. "Oh you know, standing around waiting to see how much force I can withstand before toppling over." He said with a smirk.
Emma blushed, "sorry Draco. Perry has my cookie!"
Perry had doubled back when her pursuer had stopped and was standing at the foot of the porch steps waving both cookies in the air. "Hey Draco care for a cookie? It seems like I was supposed to be giving one of these to someone but I can't recall who I guess you'll do." She said grinning.
"Perry you give. me. my. cookie!" Emma growled.
Draco chuckled. "I dunno Perry she sounds serious I think I'd give it up."
Perry laughed and tossed the cookie to her cousin. But if was intercepted by Draco. "Still", he said sniffing the cookie, "you have to wonder what a cookie that smells so delicious is really worth." He smiled down at the girl bouncing on her toes trying to snatch the cookie away.
"Give me the cookie and I won't hurt you", Emma said with a dangerous glint in her eye.
Draco looked her over she was a tiny little thing. What could she possibly do to him? He raised an eyebrow skeptically and shortly after found himself on his back Emma planted firmly on his belly eating her cookie. She chuckled at him and got up both girls offered him their hands and pulled him up.
"You can only push her so far when it comes to food", Perry said laughing.
"Yes I've come to realize that", Draco chuckled. He could not believe she's managed to knock him down. He knew part of it had been that he'd been caught off guard but still he was impressed.
"So why are you here?", Perry asked.
"Oh I just thought I'd come say hi", Draco shrugged and looked down, "the others and I haven't always been friends, I wasn't always deserving of friends. Sometimes it causes tension..." he trailed off uncomfortably.
"Today one of those days huh?" Emma said.
"Yeah a bit." Draco sighed and rubbed the back of his head self consciously. "Anyway I knew you two said you were painting this weekend and I thought I'd help."
"Oh ok come on up." Perry said brightly as she led him inside. "Mum?" She called and led them into the kitchen. "Mum this is Draco one of the new kids we told you about."
Rose eyeballed the boy. He was tall he came in with Emma behind Perry and smiled as he held out his hand. "Draco Malfoy ma'am."
Rose smiled and pulled him into a quick hug. "Nice to meet you Draco I've heard a lot about you. Would you like a cookie?"
Draco glanced nervously at Emma. "Am I gonna get tackled for it?"
Emma laughed "no you can have one just not mine."
"Yes please then." Draco said smiling.
"Mum we're gonna go finish painting now Draco has offered to help us." Perry said as she headed to the stairs.
"Alright you girls behave don't torment that poor boy too much!" She called after the girls.
...............................................................
Draco had stayed for supper he enjoyed watching the family interact. His family had never behaved that way. When his dad came in no one ran to him like Perry had done to hers. He didn't give out hugs like Michael who had made a point to hug all three of 'his girls' as he'd called them. When Emma and Perry had dashed off to wash the paint off their hands Michael had questioned Draco about his girls. Draco couldn't imagine his own father or any uncles feeling the need to check out his friends. It was a whole new experience. Draco imagined this is what most families were meant to be like. Somewhere deep inside he knew this is what he hoped for, what he had always hoped for. he'd given up that dream years ago but perhaps he could still have it....maybe someday.
He was walking home now. He loved it here in many ways. It was peaceful and no one expected him to be anything he wasn't here. But living with the golden trio and the Weasley girl was stressful. He understood their mistrust he really did. But he wished they could quit bringing it up.
Draco slowly began to feel someone watching him. He turned slowly his hand going into his jacket to grip his wand. "Hello? Who's there?" He questioned in a dangerous tone.
He heard a twig snap in the dark woods in front of him and tried to peer into the darkness. He thought of lighting his wand but how would he explain that if it turned out to be a muggle? He stood his ground preparing for an attack. Unsure of what to expect. Minutes passed he had begun to think it must have been an animal. Draco started to turn back when he heard a voice and felt his body stiffen he fell forward into the ditch. Draco was terrified he hated being unable to move or see what was coming. He tried desperately to move something anything he didn't really care he just wanted some console of himself back. He heard footsteps nearing his head and then felt breath on his ear Draco held his breath waiting for the worst.
"I don't want to hurt you Draco." The voice growled in his ear, "you're one of us and don't deserve this treatment. We don't like having our people mixing with this muggle swine. Help us if we wreak enough havoc maybe they'll call it off. But if someone were to die, from either side really, they'd end this charade and separate us for everyone's safety. Think about it Draco. I'm sure you'd rather be home with your mother than put here with your worst enemies."
