Chapter 32

"Penny, look at these letters mom showed me earlier." I tell my sister as I take a seat on her bed.

"What for?" she asks picking up a letter that was laid on the bed.

"They were sent to dad, and mom thinks that they were sent from Chris." I tell her and she reads the letter and o do the same.

Dear, Anderson

You know damn well why I'm doing this, so just be prepared instead of asking so many questions. I'll see you soon...

"I don't get why Chris would go through all this trouble." Penny says placing down the letter she just finished reading.

"I think there's something in these letters that will lead us to dad." I tell her hoping she'd agree to help me.

"Well, let's try to find it." she says grabbing letters in her hand.

Dear Anderson,

Believe me, these aren't just empty threats. I will ruin your life, so stop meddling in your brother's business.

"This is just plain weird, like what does this really even mean?" I ask showing Penny the letter I just read.

"To scare dad from helping." she says unsure.

"Looks like they didn't work then." I tell her thinking of what to actually look for.

"Check this out." Penny says handing me a letter that was written from our dad.

Dear Christopher,

I know we have our differences, but that is no need to threaten my family. I'm asking you is there no way for you to leave my brother and family alone.

"Do you think something else might have transpired from then?" I ask Penny trying to understand where my dad was going with this.

"Maybe the letters will give an address because that looks like how they get in contact with each other." she says as she begins looking through the letters.

To me this seems like it's a game for Chris. Making us think our sad was dead, marrying our mom. What is the result of this because I see nothing but pain.

"Wasn't this something dad would always say?" Penny asks looking at a letter with her face scrunched up.

"If there is no love then there is no point?" I ask her and she looks at me questioningly.

"Yes, but look there is something else." she says leaning over to me showing me the letter.

"Remember when we were civilized towards each other? What about that place we always went to?" I read out loud.

"They were friends." Penny says looking even more confused.

"I don't get it. If they were friends then why would Chris do something like this?" I asks not expecting an answer.

I read the letter again, but this time to myself. They were friends at a point in time, but Chris somehow hates my dad. Melissa and I are friends, but at a point in time she hated me.

"I think I know why he may have did it." I say as if a light bulb had went off.

"What is it?" Penny asks as her brown orbs bore into mines.

"I think dad hurt Chris first and didn't know it." I tell her as I pull out my phone and Penny just watches me.

"Who are you calling?" she asks once she sees me dialing a number.

"I was thinking we should go over to mom's house and see if she knows what may have happened." I tell her and she nods not looking too sure.

"What if she doesn't know?" she asks me and I shrug as the phone rings.

"Hello?" I hear my mom's voice emerge from my device.

"Hey mom, do you mind if Penny and I come over?" I ask her trying not to waste too much time.

"No, not at all." she says with enthusiasm laced in her voice.

"Okay, we will be over in a bit." I tell her getting off the bed.

"Alright, see you soon love you both." she says and I smile even though she can't see me.

"Love you too." Penny and I say in unison.

I hang up the phone then slip on some socks and shoes.

"I hope she knows something." Penny says grabbing her black Adidas jacket.

"I think she does, but if not we can always look through some of Chris' files." I tell her walking out of the room and into the living room.

"True," Penny says grabbing her keys and phone from off the counter in the kitchen.

"Ready?" I ask her going by the door to open it.

"Let's hit the road Jack." she says in a sing song voice causing me to laugh a little.

"You play too much." I say opening the front door and walking out.

"I know, but that's why you love me." she says and I laugh quietly trying not disturb anyone if they were sleeping.

"Part of it at least." I tell her as she closes and locks the door.

"Let's hurry up and get to the car it's getting late." Penny says walking down the stairs.

We both walk down the stairs quickly and carefully. Once we get into the car the song La Familia by Kevin Gates starts to play.

I took it as a sign that we were making the right decision. We need to know what truly happened, and get our father back.

"We are almost there." Penny tells me and I nod my head.

"I didn't just mean getting to mom's house but getting the answers our family needs." she says keeping her eyes on the road as her headlights shined.

"I was just thinking that." I tell her as we near our mother's driveway.

"Great minds think alike." she says laughing as she parks the car.

"True." I say pulling out my key to the house and walking to the door.

"You know I had a key right?" she asks locking the car doors.

"Yes ma'am I did." I tell her with a smirk playing on my lips.

"Why did you get out the car so fast then?" she asks and I shrug.

"I don't know I'm ready to get my dad back." I tell her as the door opens revealing our mother.

"I could hear you two bickering from the kitchen." she says with a smile on her beautiful face.

"Sorry," Penny and I say in unison coming into the house we once called home.

It doesn't feel like home anymore, and I'm pretty sure our mom felt the same way. Without him nothing felt right.

I mean we tried to stay together, but it felt like it was too much work. Love shouldn't take all of that, should it?

"What did you girls come over for?" my mom asks walking to the kitchen that was filled with mouth watering delectables.

"Can't we come to see our gorgeous mother?" Penny asks and my mother laughs.

"I mean you can, but I know there's something else. So what are you waiting for spill the beans." my mom says taking out three plates.

"We were looking at the letters and found out that Dad and Chris were friends." I tell her and she nods her hand and puts the plates down going into a shelf in the living room.

"Do know the reason why they fell off?" Penny asks and our mom nods handing us a black book.

"What's this?" Penny asks as I take the book from my mother's hands.

"Hopefully the answers to solve all our problems." our mom says walking back into the kitchen leaving Penn and I.

Maybe this will solve everything. Only way to find out: open it.
