Chapter 2: Questions and Answers
Karen arrived early to her boss's house as she noticed a car in the driveway, knowing Stevie was still asleep so who would be in her house without her consent and after going through a list of people in her head, she could not think of anyone who her boss would get up this early and answer the door for unless it was her or an emergency.
She walked up the stairs to the mansion and used her key to unlock the door and walked in to find nothing but silence as she walked around and looked to make sure no one was in the house besides her and her boss, thankfully she was at peace knowing no one broke in but she was still wondering who's car would be in the driveway? and didn't know that Stevie was not a morning person.
She set out everything she needed to work on as she heard a sound of what sounded like a door being opened as voices echoed from upstairs as Karen reached for her phone, putting in the number to call the authorities when she heard footsteps and the voices echoing louder as Karen just waited to call but was relieved when she seen her boss walk into the kitchen, but with a man trailing behind her and Sulamith following their lead.
Karen watched as this man kiss and touch her boss as she wasn't aware that Stevie was seeing someone because she couldn't tell who it was because he hadn't turned around to look at her yet as Stevie wasn't aware she was here yet either until she turned around to make sure Sulamith had food and water as she did.
"Good morning Karen." Stevie said as she stared at her assistant and back at Don, who was making coffee.
"Good morning boss and some stranger I can't tell who you are at this moment." Karen said as Stevie smiled.
"Karen, it's me." Don said as he turned around and Karen's jaw dropped.
"Well Don Henley, what a surprise!" Karen said as Stevie started laughing.
"Isn't it though?" Stevie asked as she smiled."
"What are you doing here?" Karen asked.
"Do you wanna tell her or should I?" Don asked.
"We both should." Stevie said as both her Don walked over to the kitchen table and sat down.
"We're together." They said in unison.
"Like boyfriend and girlfriend?" Karen asked.
"Yes." They said in unison.
"When? Where? and how?" Karen asked them.
"We got back together yesterday, I came here after she called me and how, babe?" He questioned.
"How we got back together is he asked me if I still love him and I said yes." Stevie said.
"I thought you were married?" Karen asked him.
"No, I've been divorced for awhile and I wanted to call her but life gets crazy and I never had a chance until she called me yesterday." He said as Karen had so many questions to ask just as Stevie told him and predicted.
"How are two of rock and roll's biggest stars going to be and stay together?" Karen asked.
"We're not gonna let anything get in our way of finally finding the happiness we deserve." Stevie said.
"What about Lindsey? He's going to be so upset when he finds out." Karen said.
"I don't give a damn what he thinks. After yesterday, I could care less what he has to say. I stay in my own lane and he's married to who he loves and so, I can be with anyone I want as well." Stevie said.
"I still have so many questions but I don't know what I want to say first but I'm happy that you're happy honey and that's all that matters in this moment." Karen said as Stevie smiled.
"We're both so happy and no one is going to ruin it for us." He said.
"You never know. I mean, what happens if someone says something?" Karen questioned.
"Karen, I know people are going to try to break us up but we're not going to let that happen." Stevie said.
"Well, I just wanted to make sure because I can see how happy you are and that makes me happy. You know the saying Happy boss, happy something something. I forgot how it goes." Karen said as the couple laughed.
"I think it's something like Happy wife, happy life." Stevie said as both Don and Karen laughed.
"Wait a minute? Are you telling me y'all are going to get married?" Karen asked.
"We might." Stevie said.
"I'm going to ask her to marry me one day. We still have a lot of making up to do and people to tell we're together." Don said.
"Don't rush anything, just enjoy being together. If you want to tell people, do it when you're both comfortable." Karen said.
"We will, but for right now, you're the only one that knows." Stevie said.
"Well, it's not like you could just lock him in your bedroom until I leave for the day." Karen said.
"I know but please don't tell anyone. Let us because we need this time for us and to mend what was broken." Don said.
"You don't have to worry about me telling anyone. My lips are sealed and locked." Karen said.
"Thank you." Stevie said.
"You're welcome." Karen said.
"Now, are there anymore questions you have for us?" Stevie asked.
"Yes." Karen said.
"What are they?" Don asked.
"Why are you up this early?" Karen asked as Stevie smiled.
"Sulamith heard a sound and it woke me up because she barked, waking us both up." Stevie said.
"I'm sorry." Karen said.
"It's not you, it was a bird that started chirping and it woke Sulamith up, which made her bark and then, that's what woke us up." Stevie said as she yawned.
"You can go back to bed." Karen said.
"No, it's okay. Maybe a cup of coffee will work and you talking to me might help keep me awake." Stevie said as she got up to get her a cup of coffee.
"And I had to get up anyway because I've got a few errands to run." Don said.
"Well, take her with you." Karen joked.
"People will just follow us around and the press will be unbearable." Stevie said.
"Why don't you take her to lunch later on?" Karen asked Don.
"Babe?" Don questioned.
"I would, but what about you?" Stevie asked Karen.
"I'm only working a couple of hours because what else do we have scheduled that I should be here for? You have everything that I bought the day before yesterday, so go out and have some fun." Karen said.
"Then, I'd love to join you for lunch honey." Stevie said to him as she kissed him before sitting down.
"Sulamith will probably enjoy having the house to herself for awhile unless you want me to take her to the park or to my house." Karen said.
"She usually has a nap before and after lunch but I think she'd enjoy a couple of hours with her auntie." Stevie said.
"Well, I hope y'all a wonderful time and don't get too carried away." Karen said.
"We know." Don said.
...
Karen left and took Sulamith with her for a few hours to give Don and Stevie some time to themselves as Stevie got ready for lunch as Don walked in as he looked at his lady putting mascara on and listening to music through her speaker.
"Old habits die hard, huh?" She questioned the song choice that was playing.
"Babe, you can't help that you know the songs you helped form with them but change it if you want to." He said.
"It's not John, Mick, Christine and Peter's voices and instrumental parts bothering me, I'm trying to get ready for our date and he has to sing and play his parts." Stevie said, curling a piece of hair around her curling iron.
"I'm not upset, I only listen for you anyway." He said.
"But some I have a little singing parts on." Stevie said.
"It's hard to not listen to the music you helped form babe. I mean, after we broke up, I would listen to your music still." He said as he sat on the edge of her tub.
"I'm changing it. Anything in particular?" She asked.
"How about Gold Dust Woman?" He questioned.
"Okay." Stevie said as she scrolled through her playlist until she found it.
"Put your mind at ease sweetheart." Don said, walking over and kissing the crown of her head as she closed her eyes.
"I love you honey." She said as she opened her eyes to feel him massaging her shoulders.
"I love you more my queen." He said as she smiled, blushing all the while.
...
They arrived at their favorite Mexican restaurant as their waiter seated them as Don pulled her chair out for her and they ordered their drinks.
"What are you going to have honey?" She asked as they stared at their menus.
"Probably the same thing I always do." He said as he closed his menu.
"Me too." She said as she closed hers too.
"I thought you'd order something different." He said, taking her hand into his.
"I've tried different items but I just prefer my same order without refried beans." She said.
"That's how you keep your burrito together baby." He said as she smiled.
"My stomach can't handle them, but you can eat them honey, but your sleeping far away from me." She laughed.
"Then, I won't get them." He said.
"That's what I thought." She smiled and winked at him.
Their waiter brought them chips, salsa and cheese dip as Stevie smiled from ear to ear.
"I'll be full before we even get our food." She said as he loved watching his queen smile.
"You deserve it baby, but maybe a margarita to go with it will make it better?" He questioned.
"I want to go shopping after this and I can't do it when I've had a few drinks, that and once I start drinking one margarita, I'll have another and so on." Stevie said.
"That and I remember one time at a party, you and some other people wore those necklace looking things that held tequila in them as if it were a shot glass." Don said.
"I was young then and I could drink tequila with no problem, now if I tried to, I'd probably be miserable the next day." She said.
"I've been to enough parties with you, so I know." He said.
"Now, if I have a glass of wine or they served it here, I'd be good." She said as their waiter came and took their orders and left.
"So, what stores did you want to shop at?" He asked.
"I thought we could just take a walk down the strip across the street, just to see. I couldn't tell you which ones because I like to window shop before I walk in." She said.
"Sounds good to me." He said.
"And it let's our food digest better because I feel bloated after I eat." She said.
"Well, let's shop till we drop." He said as she laughed.
"That's the point sweetheart." She said.
...
They got their food as people recognized them but respected them not to point and stare at them.
"How is your food sweetheart?" He asked her.
"Amazing!" She said.
"Good to know." He said.
"Honey, is something wrong?" She asked.
"No, but yes at the same time, I mean I have thought of this for a long time but I want it to be perfect." He said as she looked at him in confusion.
"What have you thought about for a long time that you want to be perfect?" She questioned.
"Something that I should've asked you a long time ago but I was scared." He said the waiter came and brought out a dessert plate.
"Ms. Stevie, this is for you." The young boy said as he set it down on the table.
"Oh, thank you honey. Don, you shouldn't have." She said.
"Anything for the love of my life." He said as Stevie looked down at the writing on the plate and looked to see Don on one knee with as he took the ring box from the plate.
"Don?" She questioned as tears filled her eyes.
"Stevie, my queen." He said as he got a little choked up.
"Yes?" She asked as he hit play on his phone as 'Leather and Lace' started playing.
"You're the love of my life, the melody to my heart, my best friend, the woman who won my heart, one of my many reasons to live, my rock and roll queen, but most of all, the lace to my leather and I love you today, I'll love you tomorrow and I'm going to love you forever." He stopped as Stevie could not stop the tears as he wiped them away.
"Honey, we just got back together and what if you change your mind?" She asked as he wrapped her up in a hug as she cried harder.
"I'm not gonna change my mind, I love you Stevie." He said as she looked back at him.
"I love you too." She said as he got back down on one knee.
"Now, here's my question." He said.
"Yes?" She questioned.
"Stephanie Lynn Nicks, will you marry me?" She asked as she smiled really big.
"Yes! I'll marry you!" She said as he slid the ring on her ring finger as she kissed him as the restaurant employees applauded.
