Chapter 6
- Emmalina's Point of View -
It had seemed like an eternity before someone finally came down and gave us food. We each got a stale piece of bread, a hard block of cheese, and a glass of water. It definitely wasn't the best meal I had ever eaten, but it was better than nothing.
I slowly chewed on mine to make it last longer, but Katrina wolfed hers down like it was nothing. She was so skinny and honestly, most people would mistake her for a four year old...At least, from the back. Her face didn't look 4, but the rest of her did.
She sat back and from the corner of my eye and could see her staring at my food with longing eyes. I was starving, but I still had some reserves. She didn't. Finally, with a big sigh, I handed her what was left of my bread and cheese.
"Here," I said, in the most friendly voice I could muster.
"No, it's your food," she protested.
For a moment a was a bit nonplussed at what she just did. She was starving, she had been cooped up for who knows how long, yet she still had her manners. But that only made me more stubborn.
"No, you need it more then I do. Go on, I'm not that hungry anyway," I lied.
She didn't need any further encouragement and I watched as she wolfed that down to. My stomach hurt from not having enough food, but I knew that I could survive for a quite a while before I'd need more food.
"How long do you think we've been sailing?" I asked Katrina, simply for the sake of conversation.
She shrugged.
"I da'no. Probably a day or so. We still have a long way yet."
I groaned at the thought. I had never liked sailing to start out with, and now I'd be bellow deck for a week, possibly longer.
Suddenly we heard a racket up on deck and something came tumbling down the stairs.
"What's he doing here?" A voice said from outside the door.
"There's a small leak in the other storage room. Boss told us to put em' in here," the other voice answered.
I heard the door fly open and something was shoved against a couple of crates, nocking them strait over. Then the door closed and the footsteps ran back up the stairs.
I could hear a rustle of movement toward the door and a silhouette came into few. A very tall silhouette at that.
"LIAM!" Katrina shouted, and she got up running toward the silhouette.
The silhouette, obviously a boy, turned around and knelt down on one knee, gathering Katrina in his arms.
"You're alive! Thank God you're alive!...Your bother would've killed me," the boy said.
I just sat there awkwardly, deciding that it was probably best to leave them alone.
"Are you alright?" The boy asked.
"Yeah, I'm fine...Come over here, I want you to meat someone."
"Wait...There's someone else here?"
I almost laughed out loud when he said that. His tone made it sound like he was half relieved and half embarrassed.
"Mhm, come on. I'll take you to her," Katrina said joyously, grabbing hold of his hand.
"Her?" He seemed even more alarmed at the fact that I was a girl.
They both came closer and I slowly stood up, brushing the hair out of my face.
"Emma, I want you to meet someone," Katrina beamed.
I had never seen her this happy in all the time I had been with her...Not that it was very long, but it still made me smile.
"Hello!" I smiled.
"Um...He-hello," he answered nervously.
"The name's Liam."
I tried not to chuckle, but it was very hard. He was very tall and lean, probably a farmer, and his dark brown hair was a complete mess. He was wearing typical farmers clothing consisting of a brown woolen shirt, burlap pants, and soft leather boots. He also had incredibly blue eyes and for some reason they made me think of Callum. That one thought wiped the smile strait off my face.
"Is something wrong?" Katrina asked, obviously having seen my smile disappear.
"Hmm? Oh, no, nothing's wrong...It's nice to meet you Liam," I answered quickly, changing the subject.
"So, you must be the friend Katrina was talking about?"
Liam looked down at Katrina with an accusing look then answered casually.
"Yeah, I'm him. I wish we could've met under better circumstances Emma, but I guess that's not really an option right now."
"No, it certainly isn't."
Liam also had a very thick accent, but to tell you the truth, it was actually very attractive.
"Wait a minute, were you the one that caused all the fuss up on deck?" He asked.
I shuffled my feet nervously.
"Um, yeah, I was. They um, they forgot to lock the door properly and I saw the opportunity. Unfortunately they caught me."
"I can see that," Liam chuckled.
"Where are you from?"
"Oh, um, I'm from...The North of Caraway fief, have you heard of it?" I lied.
I felt bad for lying to him, but he was probably better off not knowing who I actually was. Robin Hood was well known all around the world, and some people were none to friendly with anyone who had anything to do with him.
"Yes I have, my parents use to go there every Summer," Liam answered.
"Unfortunately they never came back."
Oh good grief! I thought. You couldn't possibly have struck a worse cord Emma!
"I-I'm sorry, I didn't mean-"
"No don't worry about it. It was a long time ago and I've moved on. Katrina's family took me in since I was best friends with their son."
I smiled a little then looked down at Katrina who had a mischievous glint in her eye.
"Well, we seem to be in a bit of fix," I began, changing the subject once more.
"Yes, we certainly are," Liam answered turning away and sitting down on a box.
"I guess we can't really do anything until we get to where we're going."
That much was true. We couldn't likely swim back home, and if another ship passed us, the crew would probably take extra care in keeping us hidden.
"It's probably going to storm later," Liam said.
"I caught a glance of the sky when they brought me down here."
Great, a storm! Just what we need...Not
