Chapter 22
- Callum's Point of View -
2 months later....
It took us forever to get the castle straitened out. We had to cut all the dirty dealings that dad had started, we had to redecorate the castle, and I had to walk countless hours after Rowan who couldn't get enough of running around her very own castle. She was 25 yet she acted like she was 13. Well, I thought. At least she didn't pretend to be all grown up and important.
"Alright, are you ready to go?" Rowan asked, breaking through my thoughts.
We were finally going back to the farm to pick the others up.
"Yuppers. I got my food, my cloak, and my horse saddled and waiting." I told her, standing up and walking out of the castle.
We rode all the way through the woods, and turned off a small path that I remembered taking, before we finally came into the clearing with the small log cabin. Smoke was curling from the chimney, horses were grazing, and ducks were running back and forth. We rode right up to the house, wrapping the reins around the pickets as soon as we dismounted.
"Well, this is it I guess." I said, looking uncertainly at the door of the cabin.
Now that I was actually here, I was afraid to go in. I had no idea what had happened in the past two months and for all I know she could be....dead.
"What are you waiting for?" Rowan asked, pushing me towards the door.
I raised my hand to nock when Rosie opened it, telling me to come in. I stepped cautiously into the house and Sam immediately walked up to me, her face solemn.
"Callum...It's Emma...She um...." Sam started.
"She what?" I asked, my voice a little more high pitched then I had intended.
"Callum, I'm sorry, but..."
"TACKLE!!!" I heard a shout from behind me before I got knocked to the ground.
The air was literally nocked out of my lungs and as I lay there on my back I saw Em's beaming face look down on me.
"PSYCH!!!" She bragged, giving Sam a high five.
"You should've seen your face." Sam laughed.
"You guys are mean." I said, sitting up.
"Sorry Callum. We just couldn't help ourselves." Em nudged me as I stood up.
"Well, at least you're on two feet."
"Yeah. What happened at the castle? Did everything go well?" Em asked, sitting down on one of the wooden rocking chairs.
"Well I got promoted to Baroness against my will." Rowan mumbled.
"No kidding! Poor girl." Sam teased.
We all chuckled a little and then Rosie came up to Em, looking up at her with big blue eyes.
"Did you die?" She asked.
"Well," Em told her, picking her up and placing her on her lap. "I was pretty close to it. But I'm too stubborn for that."
"What's stubborn mean?"
"Um, I'm not sure you want to know, Rosie." Sam laughed.
"Hey Callum!" Joe said, coming in through the door carrying a pile of firewood.
"Hi. I see you've been kept busy."
"Well, I'm not any good with medicine so I was set to bringing the fire wood."
"At least you had something to do." Em mumbled.
"I was bed ridden for almost two months. Do you have any idea how boring that is?"
"No, but I'm sure I'm going to hear all about it in the next few days." I laughed.
"I'm just happy I'll be going home soon. Pa's probably run off his head looking for me." Em said, looking out the window.
"Oh, I relayed your note to him. So he knows you left...But that still doesn't mean he's not worried. We should probably get going soon." I told her.
"I guess you're right."

- Emmalina's Point of View -
"Well, I guess this is goodbye, Rowan. Even though it was pretty weird finding out that Callum had an older sister, all in all I wouldn't trade this for anything...Well maybe I would if we could've left the being stabbed part out, but you know what I mean." I laughed, trying to shake off the sad feeling that was coming over me.
"Nah, we'll probably be seeing each other quite a bit from now on. You know, since I own a fief. I still can't get use to it."
"Well, here's our stop." Callum said, stopping his horse at the cross roads.
After a long time of rivaling thoughts, Callum finally decided that he should probably go and live with his sister. I agreed full heartedly. It was the right thing to do....But that doesn't mean I had to like it.
"Goodbye Callum." Samantha said, giving him a hug.
"See ya round." Joe said, shaking his hand.
"You to Rowan." Samantha said, waving as she started her horse down our road.
Then Joe followed Samantha and Rowan went down the other road. That left Callum and me. For a while we were silent, neither of us wanting to be the first to say goodbye. This was it. We'd probably hardly see each other and we'd probably move on with our lives. But it was what had to be done, and there was nothing either of us could do about it.
"So..." Callum started, clearing his throat.
"Callum, we both know that we're not going to be seeing each other for a very long time." I said, finally bringing it out into the open.
"Yeah...I guess we do." He answered, picking at a loose thread on his shirt.
"I'll be going back to Locksley and you'll be going with your sister...And that's the way it should be."
"Yeah."
"We're friends, and no matter the distance, we'll still stay friends."
"Yeah."
I looked up at my horses face, and then looked at the stirrup. If I mount now, I thought. It would probably spare me the pain. But I didn't. That wasn't what was right.
"So I guess this is goodbye."
"Yeah."
"OH FOR HEAVEN'S SAKE, CALLUM! WOULD YOU STOP SAYING THAT?" I shouted, a bit more harsh then I wanted it to come out.
As soon as I said it, I regretted it.
"Sorry...It's just...I da'no." He said, fiddling with his own reins.
"You don't know? Callum, if you want to say something, say it! I'm not just gonna stand around waiting for you! I've been doing that far to long now! I refuse to continue!" I blurted it all out before I realized what I was saying.
"What?" He asked, not exactly comprehending what I had just said.
It was out. There was no turning back. Then I couldn't bear it any more and threw my reins down, wrapping him in a big hug.
"You're an idiot, that's what." I said.
And to my delight, he returned the hug whispering, "I know."
