Chapter 19
- Callum's Point of View -
"Callum!" Sam said, running over to me.
"I've been looking everywhere for you."
"What? What's wrong?"
"It's Emma...She's awake. Feverish, but awake."
I almost leapt with joy at the news and immediately jumped into my horses saddle, Sam doing the same. We rode as fast as we could back to the house, not even bothering to tie my horse up. I ran into the house and strait into the bedroom where Em was staring at the ceiling.
"How is she?" I asked Mrs. Conner.
"She's been saying weird things. Most of the time I can't even make out what she's saying. She won't stop staring at the ceiling."
She looked...Different. Usually she'd say hi, or wave, or smile, or....Something! She's just lying there, her face as pale as snow.
"It's coming." She mumbled.
"What's coming?" Mrs. Conner asked her.
Em didn't answer. She just kept staring at the ceiling, her breathing coming in ragged gasps.
"Light." She mumbled again, not averting her eyes from the ceiling.
"Em, what are you talking about?" I asked, sitting down beside the bed.
"I don't think she can hear us." Mrs. Conner said.
"That's not true." Sam said from the doorway.
"Watch."
Sam walked over to the bed and knelt down beside Em.
"Emma, you're going to get better."
"It's coming." Em mumbled again.
"Emma...Emma look at me." Sam demanded.
To my surprise, Em blinked once, then turned her head to look at Sam.
"Has anyone told you how bossy you are?" Em said sleepily.
We all laughed shakily, partly from the joke and partly from relief.
"Well, you gonna listen to me, and you're gonna listen good...You're going to get better and you're going to get out of this bed. You're going to tell me that you're fine and you're going to live life like it never happened. Got it?" Sam told her.
"Samantha, no matter how hard you try, you'll never change the inevitable." Em said, flashing her a sad attempt at a smile.
"Emma, you'll be fine. You just need to rest."
"How many times do I have to tell you? It's coming. The lights leaving. I can feel it."
I felt tears prick the back of my eyes and a lump was forming in my throat. Nobody said anything. We just sat there in silence.
"You don't mean that?" Sam choked.
"Would I be kidding? You...you know me better then that Samantha...You always know." Em barely whispered, her head falling limp as she finished the sentence.
"Em?" I shook her.
She didn't move. This was it. She was dead. I would never see those beautiful green eyes again....Never.
