Chapter 7: The Apology
It’s been a week since I’ve read Katrina’s diary.
He hasn’t bothered visiting me nor have I been sent to his office.
He’s probably still angry or upset by the fact that I read something I wasn’t supposed to read.
Since the incident, Anna hasn’t visited me for at least two days. Instead, another maid came to only bring food and fresh clothes, not even uttering a word to greet me as she came through every day.
Apart from the maid, the books and the two guards who escorted me every day, I had no one else disturb me while I was in the room.
The guards who came to collect me were different each time but they still wore the same uniform proudly.
The crest of the Vindicta Pack was stitched elegantly onto their chest.
They knocked three times before they revealed themselves and it was then I knew it was time to go into the cell for the night.
Being escorted to the cells was awkward to say the least.
No one talked at all.
Walking towards the cell each night became a routine.
On my way there, I usually passed some painting and window but whenever I looked through, I only saw the darkness of the night.
Guards were stationed at each end of the hallway with their arms hanging loosely.
Nevertheless, they looked as though they were ready for battle.
It took roughly 5 minutes to reach the cell, each time I was guided through the same route. I was beginning to understand the place.
The grinding of the cell door and rattle of the key chains meant that it was time for me to enter the cell.
The cell wasn’t really special at all.
Like the one in my old pack, it was empty and cold but at least my old cell had a window. This cell was windowless and I hated that.
I haven’t even had the chance of fresh air and I definitely despised it in here.
Night through night I turned.
For the first few days, even though I was locked in the cell with no way of escaping, I was still trying to do whatever I could to do so.
I was throwing myself at the wall and I was howling as if it was a full moon.
My screams could probably be heard through the walls but I didn’t really care about that.
My wolf was in control.
She’s probably confused as I am as to where exactly we are.
After a few days, she accepted the fact that she was in the cell and slept soundlessly throughout the night.
When it reached morning, I would wake with a pile of new clothes by the end of the cell door as well as a glass of water which I swiftly took gulp of.
Then, once again, two guards would escort me back into my room to further sleep off the boredom and eat.
It was an endless cycle of boredom and frankly, I was getting sick of it.
However, on the eighth day of being here, something happened.
After walking out of the cell with the guards perched by my side, we were stopped by a tall man.
He was wearing no guard uniform but instead causal looking clothes.
I spotted a tattoo on his neck. It was a snake around a dagger. The Vindicta Pack’s crest.
“Well… Would you look at that. Is this the notorious Naomi Jackson that the Alpha won’t stop talking about?” He questioned jokingly.
He formed a smile and you could clearly see his bright pearly white teeth that shone against the light.
He stood tall and looked as though he held some sort of authority.
“Order from the Alpha himself, I am to take Naomi to his office immediately.” He looked at the guards as his tone turned serious and without even blinking, the guards bowed their heads and turned their heels in the opposite direction.
I wonder who he is.
As though he knew what I was thinking, he spoke once again.
“I am Liam. Beta of the Vindicta Pack.” He said proudly.
I nodded.
It makes good sense.
The way he ordered the guards with his commanding tone of voice.
“Come on, wolf.” He smiled sincerely and held his arm willingly towards me.
Confused, I took his arm as he led me towards Kase’s office.
His arms were strong and clearly defined however, they did not look like Kase’s.
His eyes were a deep mud brown and held absolute happiness in them.
Liam continued to talk endlessly on our way towards the office. He seems friendly enough.
Kase finally wants to see me. I don’t really know if that a good or bad thing.
Let’s just hope I don’t end up like the loyal guard he killed several days ago.
“Have you managed to explore the castle yet?” He asked.
I shook my head as he continued.
“What? Kase didn’t show you castle?” His eyes widen as if I just told him that I’m his long lost sister.
I shook my head again.
“Don’t worry. I’ll show you around whenever you want to.” He winked before he quickly changed the topic.
“It’s a nice day today. The sun is up and shining. I was having a brilliant day until that brute called me in for whatever reason. I was by the lake just outside the castle with a few of the other pack members training of course. The lake is great. Everyone goes there.” He called Kase a brute.
I mean, he must be good friends with that bastard if he’s calling him that.
Otherwise, he would he dead.
Also, Lake?!?
Well I guess we are near some lake and that’s good for starters.
I could probably check out the maps in the books later to see where exactly I am IF I return to my room.
I continued not to speak as we furthered on.
He was quite the talker and never stopped for a breath and soon enough, we reached the door of the office.
“This is where we must part our ways. Nice talking to you, Naomi.” He said happily but came closer towards my ear to whisper a “good luck” to me before he left.
I really do not want to go in.
Standing alone in the hallway and unsure of what to do, I knocked softly on the wooden door.
It was a couple of seconds before I heard the words “Come in.”
I opened the door slowly and prepared myself for the apology that was edging to escape from my lips since I read his sister’s diary.
I breathed heavily before walking as confident as I could towards his desk where he sat aimlessly with his feet on the desk.
His eyes glazed at a picture that sat on top of the table.
He stopped looking at the picture only to glance at me.
He looked the same as the last time I saw him.
“You beckoned me here?” I asked.
The Alpha didn’t reply and instead went back to looking at the photo on the desk.
He was clearly ignoring me and I wasn’t going to let him do that to me after all that he’s done.
“Well look. I’m sorry okay? It was a mistake. I shouldn’t have read the diary. If anyone is to blame, it’s me. Not Anna. She does not deserve any punishment given.” I blurted.
I expected him to say something at least but he still kept the silence going.
My fingers were tapping lightly against my leg, as I was uncertain of what to do. I was nervous.
Suddenly, he began humming to himself as though I wasn’t even there.
For about a minute, he kept humming to a beautiful tune.
It sounded familiar but I couldn’t remember the song.
Kase abruptly stopped as his sharp eyes looked deeply into my own.
“Well, sorry to break it to you, but there is no way I’m accepting that as an apology.” His voice boomed throughout the room.
He moved his chair back and took his feet off the table.
He began walking closer and closer towards me.
I stopped breathing for a split second.
The Alpha wore this tight black shirt, and you could see the lines of his body so perfectly.
Once he was close enough, he continued speaking.
“Give me one good reason right now as to why I shouldn’t kill you? You’re practically dead anyways after everything you’ve done to me.”
“What have I done to you?” I shivered slightly.
“The fact that you’re my mate defines it all. I should have killed you already and for some stupid reason, I can’t. Killing you won’t satisfy me.” He admitted.
He gripped my chin tightly and I have to say, I was scared right now.
“You read something no one was supposed to read. As to how you got it, I don’t care. I still do not accept your apology, mutt. In fact, I don’t really think I ever will. That was some personal shit right there. You dare utter a single word about what was in that diary and I swear, without a doubt, I will not hesitate to kill you and those you’ve told."
He finished and let go of my chin.
He could sense the fear in my eyes and not surprisingly, his eyes reflected resentment back at me.
"Words can't fix what you have done. Now leave.”
If I say something wrong now, he won't give a shit about his "satisfaction” and instead just kill me on the spot.
Thankfully, I didn’t say anything else.
I turned on my heels and cautiously walked towards the door.
I looked back only to see him staring at me. His arm tuck neatly behind his back.
I opened the door only to see guards ready to take me back to my room.
Hours later, I was looking at some books only to be disturb by a knock on my door. Let’s just hope it’s not Kase.
“Come in.” I beckoned.
Who entered the room, surprised me.
There in her usual attire stood Anna smiling the same as always.
“Anna.” I beamed.
I stood and strolled towards her.
“I thought you were gone.” I revealed.
“I hadn’t seen you and I was beginning to get worried. Did the Alpha…” I paused for a second.
“Did he harm you in any sort of way?”
“No no, my dear. He did not harm me. Despite his reputation, I think he has a soft spot for me. I’ve known that little devil since he was born. He would never lay a finger on me.” She promptly finished.
Thank the Heavens.
I honestly thought she was gone forever. She didn’t do anything wrong. It was by accident that she put the diary in the pile when choosing the books.
She further explained that she had other jobs to do around the castle and needed to get the books quickly and by accident, put that diary she found on the bookshelf onto the cart. The Alpha accepted her apology and ordered to her to stay away from me for at least two to three days.
When she said this, I could tell she was gravely sad. She ended her sentence and thought it was best to change to subject.
“Well…. How about those brownies?” She offered.
“Yes please.” I answered immediately.
