Chapter 2: Awakening

Barracks of the Diora kingdom

Remi had changed from his uniform into a dark blue shirt with a yellow collar. The shirt had a big "D" on the back and a yellow ring where Remi's navel was; he had on blue trousers and black boots. A few days after his arrival, Remi wanted to interact with the other Nigerians who had come to this world with him, but his social anxiety prevented that, especially when it came to Eliza. She was quite pretty. The boy decided that after he had gained some confidence he would try and establish a relationship with her and the others.

Finally, Victor invited the 6 new recruits to the main guild hall. In Diora they have 4 guild halls, 3 belonged to the strongest knights of the kingdom. But the one Remi was currently in was a freelance one for unranked knights.

"I suppose I should also tell you about your levels and rank now, huh?" said Victor, gripping his chin.

"First of all, God made a system similar to that of otherworldly games, so by simply thinking about it" As Victor said this, a small blue holographic window appeared in front of him.

"This window displays...

*Name(health, mana)

*Level(showing the amount of progress a person has made)

*Class(whether you become an archer, swordsman or wizard)

Then your stats

*Attack power(atk)

*Defense (Def)

*Speed(speed)

*Magic power(sp atk)

*Magic defense (so Def)

*Intelligence (int) [how creative one can be with magic]

*Critical hits (crit) [how lucky one can be when fighting]

"Also, note whatever class you choose can affect your stats as a whole, too," Victor finished.

"The 6 of you are all bronze-level knights and you're also rankless for the time being. If you want to raise your rank, you'll have to accomplish great feats and survive through the deadliest of challenges," Victor explained.

The ranks were-

Bronze>sliver>gold>platinum

Platinum is the highest leveled knight.

(If I'm going to strive in this world, my secondary goal should be to reach platinum) Remi thought he was definitely more ambitious in this world where the rules are flipped sideways.

"All this is really confusing, smmmm," Alex said, sighing strangely.

"Supposing one wants to reach a level instantly, what would he/she have to do?" Ali, the oldest male asked. Ali was the type who wanted to get things done quickly.

"That's easy; go defeat some demons," Victor said nonchalantly.

"Yikes..." Deborah commented, her hair looking even rougher now when she's scared.

"Back to the matter, there's this excursion we do whenever we get new recruits. If you can survive in the wilderness for a week, you'll get free equipment, housing, food, and, of course, a cash prize if you are interested", Victor announced.

Any normal person would be excited but the 6 people in front of him were the most scared of the idea, even the new ambitious Remi didn't want to risk his life for this... Then all of a sudden Remi's hand was lifted into the air.

"The hell?" Remi said as the other 5 looked at him like a madman.

Remi felt like his hand was being tied by an invisible string. He looked around and saw a knight with glowing fingers. He was dark-skinned and bald with a big scar on his scalp.

"So Remi...? I guess you're the only one brave enough to take on the challenge. Interesting!" Victor said as he wrote Remi's name on a chart.

"Um actually..." Before Remi could say anything, he felt his mouth shut itself close (the hell is this?) Remi connected this to the puppet master standing on the stairs of the guild hall.

"Well, with that said you're all dismissed. Remi, come with me", Victor said.

The others left for the knights' barracks while Remi stayed behind.

"Sorry for the forced entry, but we needed someone to take on the challenge, and I think that you are the strongest stat-wise amongst the rookies", Victor complimented Remi.

Not used to getting compliments, Remi smiled. "Not a problem. I was just nervous to speak up, that's all", Remi said, rubbing the back of his head.

Victor smiled and prepped Remi for his journey. He told Remi about how to make magic maps by placing his blood on a magic scroll to create a map of his current location. He carried a bag of supplies in case. Also, the bald knight and two others would be watching him from afar if he should need saving, but then the challenge would end with his loss.

The next day.

Remi left the barracks early in the morning and didn't say a word to the others. He promised himself that once he returned, he would befriend them, and try his luck with Eliza. He walked almost 2 miles into the plain forest. He stumbled upon a rocky cave next to a stream under the forest cliff. He took out a scroll and bit his thumb and placed the blood on it, marking his area.

"No monsters spotted. This seems like a good place to set up a hideout". Taking out the treasure chest from his Halo inventory, Remi took out a pickaxe. With his newly found strength(thanks to his warrior class upgrade to his attack stat), making the cave a lot more roomier was easy and he even made window holes. Remi then went to chop down a few trees, wanting to make a door, windows, and a bed ramp. After setting up his bed, Remi went hunting.

"Still no monsters in sight, that's really odd," Remi said as he walked the forest floor with his short sword.

Remi managed to catch 4 wild fowls and decided to breed them.

"Reminds me of when my mom would do this. Damn, I miss her." Remi said, reminiscing about his past life and wondering how his mother, despite her nagging and pushy attitude.

Remi cast the thought out of his mind because if he were to feel sad about it, it would hinder his growth in this new world.

5 days later

Remi has been able to live freely on his own for almost a week now. He had food in the form of chickens and eggs and fresh water from the stream.

He was also lucky enough not to meet any undead, skeletons, or spiders, even at night; as long as torches were lit in front of his house, no monsters would come near it if there were any monsters around there.

Remi took out his map and began to think about what he would get as a reward for surviving for a week, how he would boast about it to the others, and how Eliza would react.

"Oh Remi, you're such a brave guy," the boy said in a feminine voice, trying to mimic Eliza, "Oluwa mi ooo!" He said in Yoruba, his cheeks flashing red.

"Help! Help me!" A loud cry drew the boy's attention towards the west side of the woods.

Remi sprinted into action, his new-found confidence overwhelmed his sense of reason.

As he dove into the woods, he witnessed a beautiful blonde woman being attacked by what could only be described as a...

"Zombie! Take this!" The boy, without hesitation, slashed half hazardously at the walking corpse of a man, defeating it and turning it into a pile of mush.

"Are you okay?" Asked Remi.

"Yes, I'm fine, thank you, Mr knight; I'm Samantha. That undead man has been chasing me for days now. Do you have a place I can rest in?" The woman asked.

"Sure there is, you can stay at my place!" Without hesitation, the boy invited the woman to his hideout. He was completely engrossed by her fair skin and luscious hair.

"My name's Remi, by the way."

"Remi? What a cute name!" Samantha said while she kissed Remi on the cheek, further making him infatuated with her.

As they got to the cave, the woman suspiciously looked around as if she was looking for something. However, Remi still didn't notice a thing. The boy was thinking about how to impress her. To him, she was like an NPC in a game where he wanted to max out whatever relationship status she had.

(Samantha is really cute, is it wrong to think I can get two girlfriends? I mean I'm in a new world after all) Remi's mind began to wander in a strange direction thanks to his hubris.

"Ummm, if it's not too much to ask... There are still some zombies around. Could you get rid of them? Please." Asked Samantha, her big green eyes glowed magically and Remi just couldn't refuse.

The boy rushed out again towards the direction he had slayed the zombie in... However, something was off, the area was quiet... Too quiet.

Finally, he reached the cliffside above a chasm leading underground.

The boy wanted to get a better view of the chasm, but a sudden rustling in the bush alerted him.

3 creatures made of red mucus approached him from behind the bushes and he took a defensive stance. "Round shiny bodies, a black core at the center... Slimes? What are slimes doing here? I thought they were zombies."

"About that..." A familiar voice echoed throughout the whole forest, shocking Remi down to his bones. "Samantha?"

The woman in question appeared from within the earth. Her smile was terrifying and her skin looked as if it was melting.

"The Aris Church thanks you for your kind donation. Remi, your cave is quite special. Now then, return to your world and leave this place", she said in an ominous voice, her skin transforming into that of a wrinkly bald old man in a pure white tunic.

The mere sight of the transformation turned Remi's stomach. He desperately tried his best not to vomit. "Who... Who are you?!" The boy screamed.

"My name... Windler, I guess... Not that that matters anyway, so long boy..." As the old man said this, the slimes began to shine brighter, and then...

'Boom!'

The entire cliff side, excluding the part Windler was standing on, was blown up into pieces and fell into the chasm. Remi's eyes were full of rage but he could do nothing but plummet to his doom.

Deep underground

Remi's half-dead body was lying on the river bank of an underground reservoir. The saltwater stung his wounds as blood sipped out from them. A small light shined on his face, making his right eye open. Remi lifted his hand, reaching for the light. He could only lift his index finger so it looked like he was pointing towards the sky.

"Not... Yet... " Remi said faintly as he was drifting away from life once again.

He needed another chance. He couldn't just die again after getting this opportunity. He wanted revenge for what the cult had done to him.

"Oh, it's been a while since I've sensed such a wrathful soul," a giddy demonic voice spoke out. Remi could only see a light blue fog in front of him.

"So you want to live, right? You want revenge on the one who put you here, right? I also want revenge! I'll be glad to help you out if you help me too! Deal?!" The demonic fog said as if smiling as well.

Remi could no longer speak but he wanted another chance at life, no matter the cost. "Hehehehehe let's begin!" The fog said as it entered through Remi's mouth, eyes, and ears.

"Gaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!" Remi screamed in pain as it felt like his nervous system was being invaded by a foreign body, and blue veins spread all around his skin.
