Chapter 9
Frustration starts to take hold of Nila since her friends still won't wake up. She walks over to Brice with a pillow in hand and hits him with it, hard.
"Wake up!" she whisper-yells and he does.
"Ow!" he shouts out.
Nila puts a finger up to her mouth and shushes Brice for being so loud. Brice looks up at Nila with a shocked look on his face. Brice's shout ended up waking the rest of the group and they slowly get out of their beds.
"What on Earth is going on, Nila?" Kaitlyn asks whilst rubbing the crust out of her eyes.
"Anna is getting surgery done right now!" Nila finally says, sounding a bit annoyed about all the time she had to waste to wake her friends up.
"Wait, what? What for?!" Riley uncrossed his arms and has a rather alarmed look on his face.
"I don't know but I heard Mr Wharren and Miss Chaucer talking..."
"What did they say?" Brice chirps in.
"It- it didn't make much sense but Mr Wharren said that we're not at the proper amount-"
"Amount of what?"
"I'm guessing the pills. That's the only thing we've had to digest, right? Anna's the only one that didn't go through with our plan. And I got you two," Nila pauses and points towards Kaitlyn and Riley, "involved in it while we were doing our intelligence tests."
"What plan?" Brice asks, confused.
"Oh, that's right. Wait a minute, if you were having the pills how come you weren't taken as well?" asks Nila.
"Th-that's because," Brice starts, he shifts his weight as he stands and starts to look uncomfortable, "I never ate...breakfast or lunch..or dinner."
Then it finally clicks and Nila's heart crumbles a bit. 'He was starving himself.' Nila's expression tells Brice that she understands and she looks as if she's about to say something but Brice shakes his head.
Nila slowly nods and proceeds back to explaining the conversation she overhead. "Miss Chaucer then went on saying that her clientele won't be happy about the delay of...I think, our surgeries. She then asked about about the "Redhead"."
"Anna..." Kaitlyn mutters.
"I'm going to go find her," states Nila.
"But what if you get caught?" asks Riley.
"Well, if they're not doing anything bad then what's there to hide? I'm just merely checking up on my friend," says Nila in an innocent tone of voice.
Her friends glance at each other worriedly until Riley breaks the gaze and steps forward. "Then, I'm going with you."
"Me too," adds Kaitlyn.
"Same here, something seems wrong," says Brice.
Nila smiles gratefully. "Okay then, let's try and stick together and not draw attention to ourselves," says Nila and she opens the door to peer out into the hallway. No nurses, doctors, Mr Wharren or Miss Chaucer are anywhere to be seen.
"Let's go."
------------------------
The group speed walk down the corridors of the medical centre looking for a sign or anything that might lead them to Anna's whereabouts. They have a few close calls with nurses and doctors strolling past them but usually they would either hide or pretend to be following behind another nurse. Nila fiddles with the diamond Mars necklace around her neck that Anna gave to her, worriedly. Hoping that maybe it's magical and would teleport her to her friend. If only.
Riley seems to notice Nila's frustrations and stops walking, telling the others to stay where they are. He then walks towards a young nurse, laughing and chatting away to a doctor next to her.
"Riley! What. Are. You. Doing?!" Kaitlyn yells through her teeth but Riley merely ignores her.
"Excuse me, miss?" Riley interrupts their conversation and the nurse turns around, he puts a confused look on his face and clears his throat, "Um, Miss Chaucer told us to go to the surgery rooms straight away but..my friends and I don't know where those are. Can you please help us?" Riley asks in an innocent voice, with the look on his face of a lost child.
The nurse smiles, "Of course!" she says and drapes an arm over Riley's shoulder, bringing him closer to her side as she steps out into the middle of the walkway and points down the corridor. "You'll need to go through those doors, there on the left and take a right into 'Operations Unit'." Riley smiles and nods as she talks meanwhile, he stealthily moves his hand down behind her to the back pocket of her coat where a walkie talkie hangs. "From there, there should be colour coded lines to lead you where you need to go. Red is surgery." The nurse smiles once again. "Got that?"
"Yep, all good. Thanks," Riley nods and he swipes the walkie talkie from her pocket and hides it behind his back.
The nurse and Riley part ways and Riley walks back to the group with a smug smirk on his face.
"Riley, you sly fox~," Kaitlyn rolls her eyes. "You're lucky she didn't walk with us to surgery."
As the group start walking to their destination, Brice looks over his shoulder and his eyes go wide with panic and he puts a hand on Riley's shoulder. He watches as the nurse pats down her coat, searching for her radio so she can inform Miss Chaucer that she sent the kids down but it's nowhere to be found. The nurse gradually looks up and a look of realisation crosses her face.
"Hey!" she shouts and points an accusing finger in their direction.
"Uh, Riley. She's realised. Let's get going!" informs Brice and the group set off into a sprint.
Meanwhile, the nurse sprints off to find another walkie talkie and runs into a fellow nurse.
"Your radio, I need it now!" demands the head nurse, holding the other nurse by the shoulders.
"O-o-okay, here," the other nurse stutters, oblivious to what's going on and slowly hands over her walkie talkie.
The nurse takes it quickly and let's go of her colleague. She fumbles around with some switches and buttons before putting the radio up to her mouth. She wipes some stray hairs out of her face and has wears a stressed expression. "Miss Chaucer, Miss Chaucer! Please come in!"
There's static and then a voice, "Yes?"
"I-I am so sorry, miss. These teenagers, they lied to me and said you sent them to surgery and I think they know something's wro-"
"What?! You stupid girl! They are our latest subjects! Get. Them. Now or God help you.."
"Yes, miss. Right away, miss."
The nurse hangs up and runs over to a wall and slams her hand down on a big, red button. Alarms sound and the hallways turn red from the emergency lights. The nurse then changes the channel on the radio and informs the Tower guards about the subjects and to not let them escape, no matter what.
------------------------
"Okay, red is surgery.." Nila mumbles as she follows the red line of paint.
Suddenly, the lights go off and they're sent into complete darkness until red, emergency lights go off and an ear piercing alarm emits through the medical centre's speakers.
"That nurse must've found a way to inform Earleen. We need to get going," says Brice.
"Surgery!" Nila yells as she pushes past the big, white double doors.
All medical staff had evacuated the room due to the alarm, meaning that they're the only one's in there. But not for long, Riley has no doubt that Earleen has sent guards down and if they want to rescue Anna, they better get a move on.
"Hurry up" pushes Riley.
"Shut up, I don't know what room she's in.." Nila spits back but as she looks through the window of room 14, between the gap of the big teal coloured curtains hiding the bed that lays behind, she catches the glimpse of someone's leg and barges in.
Eventually the rest of the group do as well and watch as Nila slowly peels back the curtain, she smiles, "Ann-" but doesn't finish. Fear and despair cloud her eyes and she steps back, her hands covering her mouth. Kaitlyn can hear Nila making choking noises as she tries her best not to cry or scream.
"Oh no, Nila?" she rushes over to Nila's side and puts a hand on her shoulder. When Kaitlyn turns her head she can't help but scream at the sight laying on the table.
At this, Riley and Brice slowly walk over, scared of what they'll see. Brice watches as Nila dry reaches, looking as if she's about to vomit and Brice kneels down and rubs her back. Not sure of what else he can do to comfort her.
Riley looks at Anna and hangs back, silently crying. "Poor girl."
Nila wipes her mouth and stands back up, she's still shaking but no longer crying, she can't cry. She doesn't know what to feel apart from shocked. "They kil-led her, they killed Anna..." she mutters while staring at her friend's dead body.
Anna lies on the metal surgical table, lifeless with deep cuts on her arms, legs and torso. As if the surgeons were trying to take some thing out. The worst thing that wanted to make Nila gag her stomach out was that Anna's head is cut open, literally. You can see her brain. What on Earth where they thing to do?
But Nila's thoughts are soon interrupted by the sound of heavy, military boots running in their direction.
