Chapter 22

With daylight fading, the only way the dark grey wall could be seen from the outside was from the numerous, ginormous spotlights lined across the top of the wall. The temperatures have dropped and the weather, more chilly from where the team huddles together lying across the rocky, grass-speckled ground.

"Wait! Hold up," Friday whispers in an urgent tone and places a hand across Nila's chest from where they lay in a rare patch of tall grass just about twelve meters away from Eden's wall. To get a good look at it, Nila has to crane her neck up as far as possible and ahead of her, all that can be seen is a dull grey that stretches for miles in a circular shape around the city of sin. Friday's physical and mental state seem to have gotten a lot better since last week when Nila spewed her speech. Much to Nila's luck, Friday hasn't gone all 'doom and gloom' on her which she thought would've happened. The woman did lose on of her arms.

"Urgh, I wouldn't of wanted to be in charge of building that," she thinks in astonishment.

Behind her, Dimitri can be heard making a frustrated clicking noise with his tongue. "What is it? Come on, Fester gave you the clear! We're waisting time, let's go," he half yells, half whispers in Friday's ear.

"It's been ages since you've been out on a mission. I know what I'm doing, let me do this my way," Friday gives him a stern gaze before quickly flinging her head up to glance at the top of the wall then back ahead of her. Along the top, the occasional silhouette of a guard would stroll by, stop every couple meters or so and scan the ground below them with a large black machine that would rest across one shoulder. The machine almost resembles a bazooka except square-shaped and crossed with a camera. Even from so high up, Nila can hear the odd buzzing noise emit from the scanner whilst it lets out tiny florescent blue rays in a circle form on the ground below for a ten meter radius. Also present along Eden's wall are watch towers that shelter guards equipped with large guns.

"Psst, what are they doing?" Kaitlyn questions in a whisper.

Lucas replies, "Scanning for movement around the wall. They seem to be motion detectors of some sort."

At first, Nila think's Friday's nuts. All that's ahead of them is solid stone and there's no way on Earth they're going to climb over a twenty or so meter high wall especially not with those guards around anyway. Even then, an alarm would probably go off and then it's "farewell life!" for Nila and the team.

However, after playing quite a long, arduous game of "spot the difference" with herself, (trying to pinpoint whatever it is Friday keeps gazing at), a flashing white light catches her attention. Firstly, there's a long single flash followed by one short, two long, another short and three last longs. Reminding Nila of Morse Code in which she learnt back on Mars. Well, only for a few lessons anyway. Until she gave up.

------------------------

"I reckon this one's pretty simple. Three words: I am alive. Try it," Chloe demands, handing a whining Nila a special pen to write with on her tablet.

Sunlight pours through the multiple circular windows that line the sides of the white walls in the classroom. Giving Chloe who stands, looming over in front of Nila's desk an angelic glow. Meanwhile, Dylan sits across from them at his own desk grinning stupidly at Nila's failures to tackle Morse Code.

"I give up. This is stupid. Why can't I just yell "help!" like in the good ol' days?" Nila jokes, her voice giving away a tad bit of defeat.

"Fine, lets do something more easier. SOS."

"I'm not going to remember this anyway."

"Oh, come on! That's probably the most basic, well known one out there. Look, it's dit dit dit, dah dah dah, dit dit dit."

Dylan gives a quick exhale of breath through his nose. "Gee, it sounds like you're having a seizure," he exclaims with a little chuckle.

Chloe's eyes narrow and she twists her head around almost three-hundred and sixty degrees in Dylan's direction. To be honest, Nila wouldn't be surprised if Chloe was half Barn Owl. "Hey! Seizures are no laughing matter!" she sneers and launches a textbook for their Constellations, Galaxy's and Occurrences class that she was holding in her hands.

His smile is almost immediately swiped off his face when he noticed and Dylan, being the quick-reflexed guy that he is ducks just in time to have the heavy textbook slide over his head. "Okay! Okay, I know," he winces and straightens himself back up. However, once he's relaxed once again in his chair, he crosses his arms and looks to the side. "You're no laughing matter."

After Dylan's snarky remark, which Chloe heard by the way (because she is an Owl halfbreed) she chased him all around the room, demanding an apology. Though, Dylan was on top of the draw's leaderboard for a reason. Being agile and strong, Dylan avoided the rampaging Chloe whilst partaking in parkour-ing around the classroom. Sadly, no matter how long Nila, Dylan and Chloe stay friends..the two will always find something to not get along about. It wasn't long until Dylan found himself cornered by Chloe the Barn Owl and Nila assumed she should do something to help before he gets badly injured. That was where she was mistaken. When Nila went to step in, Chloe was in mid-swing to slap Dylan with the textbook and took it instead.

Silver lining? Chloe felt devastatingly guilty for causing her friend's face a black eye and coaxed and smothered Nila all day afterwards like a mother hen. And Dylan? He felt pretty responsible and therefore decided to make a bouquet of pretend flowers made with scraps of an old textbook and recycled popsicle sticks. It wasn't the prettiest but he didn't have much to work with either. That made it sort of special.

------------------------

"It's time to go."

Friday waves a hand to beckon everyone and they all start tip-toeing their way over. Making sure to stay clear of those scanners by any means necessary.

"Why couldn't Jeffery come with us on the mission?" Nila asks in a casual curiosity as they snoop their way over.

Naite sighs, "He's..attempting to set up a working farm somewhere in the jungle near Sanctuary beach, with the minimal sunlight and overly rich soil..that's not going to be very easy."

When the team finally gets over to the wall, the cracks in it suddenly become visible. There's an apparent, jagged and deep crack in the shape of a triangle about two meters tall but yet, apart from that that doesn't seem to be an entry.

"Hmm, a wall. Very helpful," Riley mutters in a sarcastic tone but the sound of stone scraping against stone shuts him up and the whole group takes a step back.

Suddenly, out pops the cracked piece of wall and it lands against the ground with a puff of dust and a loud thump. Soon followed by someone's petite head.

"Well, what are you all waiting for?" asks a lady with short, strawberry blond pixie cut hair and porcelain white skin.

"Fester!" Friday exclaims, almost too excitedly but makes a mental note to herself to keep her voice down. "Long time, no see."

After "Fester" (as Friday refers to her as), blocked the hole in the wall back up, the team made their way through what Nila assumes would've been passageways for builders or plumbers to make their way around the wall through. If Nila could only explain those passageways in two words they'd be: musty and crowded. There's a consistent, dim green light apparent through the passageways and the walls are lined with large rusty pipes. No one's probably set their sights on them in ages until now. The whole time, Fester and Friday would constantly bicker like they were two teenage girls taking a stroll through the park. Does it not register to them what they're here to do? But then again, it's probably become normal for them.

When they do eventually make it to the end, where a long steel ladder awaits them, Fester turns around allowing Nila to get a good look at Friday's mysterious accomplice. Fester seems to be a fitting name for the woman. Her strawberry blonde hair is done in a pixie cut where her hair just reaches below her ears and her hair points out in some places. She has small, almond shaped eyes with iris' the colour of charcoal accompanied by a little button nose and thin lips. However, she's quite tall with her long legs and petite waist but her army-green, denim jacket she's wearing semi disguises that.

"Okay, the name's Fester. I'm a good friend of Friday, here. Now," she pauses. "I'm sure you three kids know why we're here and that you're prepared?" she asks throwing an anxious looking Kaitlyn, Riley and Nila herself a glance. They all nod in agreement. "Good. Well without further adeau, we should get going. Make sure you follow me, I know my way around Eden."

"Wait, uh let me introduce myself!" Naite stammers. "I'm uh, uh, well, I'm.."

"Today would be nice."

"I'm Naite!" he finally manages to get out. "Gee, when I heard the name Fester I didn't quite imagine a lady as alluring as you," he finishes with a little seductive grin but ends up earning a grimace in reply at his pathetic excuse of a pick up line. Mainly because he was sort of insulting her name.

Fester gives a little snort. "Thanks lovely but we've sort of got more important things to do," she murmurs and blows Naite a little kiss before turning to climb up the ladder.

Everyone else soon goes to do the same, apart from Naite. He still seems a little dazed.

In Nila's mind, Fester resembles an elegant little elf.

But with sass.

An hour went by until they finally arrived in the correct District via Eden's underground sewage system. Sadly, none of the sewers would run directly under the armoury and so therefore, there was no other option but plan A the team constructed back at Sanctuary Beach. There were a few close calls during their journey like when they first arrived at Fester's residence. Riley was thirsty and assumed it'd be fine to get a drink from the tap but the tap zapped him. Weirdly enough, Fester got furious with him and explained that there are certain times people can drink water and so the "zap" is there to ensure no one tries something stupid. Not only that, the tap sends the felon's fingerprint to Eden's police department for a water tax. Luckily, his fingers were much too covered in grime from the passageways to be comprehensible.

"Psst, get over here!" whisper-yells Dimitri and Nila quickly obliges.

"Okay. Quick recap. Kaitlyn your partner is Lucas. Nila your partner is Dimitri. Naite your partner is F-" Friday starts but Fester frantically shaking her head from behind the poor guy makes her think otherwise. "You're with..you're with me. Lastly, Riley your partner is Fester," she states and the hopeful gleam in Naite's eyes diminishes, making her feel a bit bad.

"Spread out," is Friday's last command and the team go their separate ways whilst Fester goes to her vantage point on the roof of someone's house.

With Kaitlyn and Lucas to the North, Riley and Fester to the West, Naite and Friday to the South and Nila and Dimitri covering the East side, they all have their own side surrounding the armoury that is their responsibility for keeping "guard free". In the semi-posh and high-end looking streets and alleyways of this District, Nila assumes this is probably the living quarters for those of a Middle Class status. But the closer they get to the armoury, the rarer houses become. A few orange and brown leaves are sprinkled across the grey stone floor, giving some colour to the mostly white buildings surrounding her. Fester gives her permission to start after overlooking the area and Nila and Dimitri start down the minuscule alleyway.

There's a guard right ahead, one half of him visible as he leans against a wall observing the area before him. Dressed in a navy blue collared-shirt and pants with silver linings and the Edenial seal on the front, he gives a sigh and fiddles with the black radio in his hand. Nila gives a nod in Dimitri's direction and throws him the small vile of Ether. They only have a limited amount due to it being divided amongst the others but Dimitri is strong. It shouldn't be a problem. And it isn't, the guards knocked unconscious in no time. Down the track, the two are faced with a group of three guards huddled together like penguins to avoid the bitter and biting cold. The answer to the dilemma is simple, Nila would light a smoke grenade with a lighter, peg it in the guards' direction and she and Dimitri would pick a target. A baby-blue cloud of smoke would emit into the air, looking quite odd in the white colour palette of District 3, the third out of five.

"What the hell?" a guard murmurs shortly before mewling and letting out muffled yells for assistance and then slowly slipping into a short, deep sleep.

"Make sure you don't allow them enough time to call for back up," Fester's slightly deep sounding voice resonates in Nila's ears.

Eventually, each side of the armoury is surrounded by the blue smoke and sleeping guards litter the floor.

"Okay, get in the armoury quick! And make sure you take whatever you can, leave nothing behind."

Nila gives a nod in Fester's direction and opens up the cylinder shaped, brown bag that's strapped over her shoulder. Dimitri and the others do the same, though when Nila and Dimitri tip-toe up to the solid white, sliding doors, a guard's identification is needed to be opened.

"I'll get one," Nila informs Dimitri and scrambles and scavenges around the square to find an ID card.

What she wasn't aware of was they accidentally left a guard. Whilst kneeling beside a guard's unconscious body, something hard and cold to the touch in the shape of a cylinder is pressed against the back of her scalp. A lightning bolt of fear runs through her body from head to toe and wide eyed, she slowly brings her hands up in the air.

"This is James McCaulley from Sector 3, I've-" the guard starts, but suddenly goes silent. Out of the blue, James' body drops to the ground beside her with a big, pink, blue and green bruise on his temple and Nila, in all honesty feels relieved when she sees Lucas. He clears his throat a couple times and then proceeds to talk into the walkie talkie. "Never mind. False alarm, the shadows were playing tricks on my eyes. Over."

"Come on," he ushers and lends Nila a hand.

They open the doors easily and each and everyone of them start packing their bags with all that they could. Meanwhile, Friday scribbled down some words on the back of Earleen's letter. Once the room is bare, they quickly get out of there before the smoke starts to fade.

Let's see how Miss Chaucer does being the underdog this time.
